There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

The Quiet Girl, an Oscar contender for Best International Feature, opened to a robust $60k on six screens this weekend for a per-theater average of $10k. The film by Colm Bairead presented by Super Ltd is based on the short story by Claire Keegan of a shy nine-year-old girl in rural Ireland. It led debuts in a specialty market that’s showing consistent signs of recovery amid a wider slate of films. Emily from Bleecker Street expanded to solid numbers and this year’s program of Oscar Nominated Short Films blew past last year with a $1.6 million cume in week two.
It’s hard to describe the specialty landscape. “We’re not where we want to be yet,” said one distributor. “Slowly approaching pre-Covid” levels sounds too optimistic. But there is a recovery underway that seems to be consistent. “It used to be one step forward, one step back. A good sign,...

The title that saw Riz Ahmed stifle laughter, the press room crack up and Allison Williams murmur “no comment” at Oscar nominations last month hits theaters today as ShortsTV presents Oscar Nominated Short Films at circa 380 locations in 75 markets.
The program, three feature-length presentations of the five nominees for Live Action, Animated and Documentary short films, will expand to 500-600 screens by Academy Awards week. Exhibitors can play any or all of the trio. Some are splitting the doc shorts, at 160 minutes, in two. “We leave that up to theaters,” said ShortsTV founder-ceo Carter Pilcher. My Year Of Dicks is an animation entry.
ShortsTV has been releasing these theatrically for 18 years and they do pretty well, hitting 3.5 million in box office pre-Covid. That fell to 1.8 million in 2021 but Pilcher is hoping for a rebound, calling this year’s crop “absolutely some of the best and most audience-friendly films we’ve...

For all the buzz around Oscar-nominated films each season, shorts tend to receive far less attention, even though the ceremony devotes three categories to celebrate the best of the year. The Oscars have honored shorts since the 1930s, and over the decades, the short categories for Best Live Action, Best Documentary, and Best Animated have been crucial to honoring an array of memorable cinematic achievements.
In recent years, the short film categories have helped launch the careers of filmmakers who went to become celebrated auteurs, including Andrea Arnold (“Wasp”) and Martin McDonagh (“Six Shooter”). Last year, Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim actor to win the short film Oscar for “The Long Goodbye,” which he co-wrote, produced, and starred in. Short film Oscars have gone to rising stars across the industry, from documentarian Roger Ross Williams (“Dear Prudence”) to “Turning Red” director Domee Shi.

With the debut of Quibi, the short form categories at the Emmys may never be the same. The launch of the mobile streaming service hasn’t exactly been smooth: There were early questions about its business plan and whether consumers would want to pay for such content when free platforms including YouTube exist, subscriptions have already been far below expectations and many of those free trial deals are now expiring.
But with Quibi’s sheer volume of content, its submissions for the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be vast across three short form genre categories, as well as in the short form actor and actress categories. It’s also making a play for the character voice-over performance and original music and lyrics fields.

Exclusive: TVCortos, which programs short-form Spanish entertainment, has launched in Mexico via a deal with a top pay-tv provider, Megacable.
ShortsTV, a channel dedicated to short movies that is known in the U.S. for, among other things, backing theatrical programs of Oscar-nominated shorts, is the curator of TVCortos. Together, the companies oversee the largest short film catalog in the world. In the library are more than 13,000 films, including hundreds of Oscar-nominated shorts, award-winning content and star-studded fictions, animated shorts and documentaries. ShortsTV’s Spanish short film library has grown quickly, through sponsorships of Latin American film festivals and an influential presence in local film markets that’s added hundreds of Spanish-language films.
The Mexico launch follows other expansions in Latin America by ShortsTV over the past year and a widening of distribution in India last fall that gave the company reach to 100 million global homes.

Remember when Cinemark theaters threatened to boycott Tower Heist because it would be available on VOD during its theatrical release? Imagine if a film were available in full, not only on pay-per-view, but online for free during its theatrical release. That’s what happened with this year’s Oscar-nominated animated shorts, which cable channel ShortsHD, in conjunction with the Academy, has been screening around the country since Feb. 1.
After free versions of all five animated shorts cropped up on websites like YouTube and Hulu, theaters showing the films threatened to stop screening the animated slate if the films remained online for free.

Whether it's at film school or in their backyards growing up, many filmmakers get their start making short films. In the past though, with no real outlet for those films to be seen, they were largely regarded as a minor stepping stone towards eventually making features. Things have changed. Technology has gotten better, cheaper and knocking out a 15 minute movie seems infinitely more manageable than a longer one. Plus, with sites like YouTube making it so much easier to share and digest shorts today, not to mention major companies like Pixar pushing the format, the short film seems to be evolving into more than just a go between. To that end, Thursday DirecTV is adding a channel solely dedicated to short films: ShortsHD. ShortsHD is already on Dish Network and At&T U-Verse but DirecTV is there biggest addition yet. It's put together by Shorts International, described as "the world...

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.
