In August 2017, Americans clashed in Charlottesville, Va., over the question of whether to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. It was, unofficially speaking, a reenactment of the Civil War that divided this country 150 years earlier, and comedian-cum-filmmaker Cj Hunt was there to witness the standoff.
We all know what Trump said of those on both sides of the issue, but Hunt’s alternately amusing and enraging essay film “The Neutral Ground” goes beyond the surface debates to examine why some Southerners are so attached to their Civil War heroes. The answer, complicated though it may be, is tied up in the pernicious propaganda campaign known as the Lost Cause, which has enabled subsequent generations to rationalize (rather than reconcile/repair) the racism of their not-so-distant past.
“There are no Hitler statues in Germany today,” Rev. Jesse Jackson observed after the confrontation in Charlottesville turned violent. That tragedy...

Mount Vernon, V.A. — Peter James bent down to inspect a plaque about George Washington’s plantation profits. Mr. James, 24, is an independent hemp farmer visiting Washington, D.C. from Akron, Ohio this week for the Fourth of July. Like many Americans, Mr. James, who is black, said he was “taking a sober look” at history and “really trying to digest what it means to be an American today.” He’s hardly the only one.

The GOP loves to point out that Joe Biden hasn’t held a press conference in nearly three months due to the coronavirus pandemic. After the former Vice-President took questions from the media today, Donald Trump may be wishing the man who aims to kick him out of the Oval Office had continued to stay away from media microphones.
“I can hardly wait to compare my cognitive capability to the cognitive capability of the man I’m running against,” the Democrats’ presumptive nominee replied with smile to the final question from a Fox News Channel reporter who asked about his faculties and the prospect of facing the former Celebrity Apprentice host in a trio of debates.

Updated: The Seven Arts Entertainment CEO, his wife Susan and lawyer Michael Arata have been found guilty of conspiracy to wire fraud in Louisiana to the tune of $1.1m.
Hoffman, the former CEO of Carolco Pictures, the powerhouse producer behind such films as Total Recall and Terminator 2, faces up to 405 years in prison after a New Orleans jury reached its verdict on Monday.
The three defendants were found guilty of submitting false documents in 2009 related to the renovation of a New Orleans mansion converted into a post-production facility.
Prosecutors said Hoffman and Arata did this to receive film tax credits although they never incurred expenditure in the first place and hid the fact via “circuitous bank transfers”.
Hoffman was also convicted on 21 related counts of mail and wire fraud
Arata was convicted on seven counts of wire fraud and four of giving false statements and faces a maximum term of 185 years.

New Orleans (AP) — Despite threatening skies, the Mardi Gras party carried on as thousands of costumed revelers cheered glitzy floats with make-believe monarchs in an all-out bash before Lent. In the French Quarter, as usual, Fat Tuesday played out with all its flesh and raunchiness.
Crowds were a little smaller than recent years, perhaps influenced by the forecast of rain. Still, parades went off as scheduled even as a fog settled over the riverfront and downtown areas.
Police, who had to deal with massive waves of visitors — first for Super Bowl and then for Mardi Gras — reported no major problems other than Saturday night when four people were shot on Bourbon Street. A suspect has been arrested.
There was a heavy police presence in the tourist-filled Quarter, where crowds began to swell in the early afternoon and would be bursting at the seams by the time police on horseback declared the party over at midnight.

An electrical device that had been installed expressly to prevent a power outage caused the Super Bowl blackout, the stadium’s power company said Friday as it took the blame for the outage that brought the game to a halt for more than a half-hour.

Super Bowl Xlvii was delayed for more than 30 minutes when a power outage occurred after the halftime show — and Beyoncé’s electric performance is not to blame!
A lot happened on Feb. 3: The Baltimore Ravens secured a victory over the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl Xlvii, Beyonce delivered the most epic halftime show ever — oh, and there was a huge power outage that lasted for 34 minutes! Moments into the third quarter, the New Orleans Superdome was plunged into darkness and players were left standing idle while officials scrambled to sort out the problem.
Super Bowl Black Out — What Caused It?
A joint statement was released from Entergy New Orleans and Superdome operator Smg, which said there was a problem with the stadium’s energy lines.
“A piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load sensed an abnormality in the system,” the statement said, as reported by the New York Times.

New Orleans -- The Essence Music Festival kicked off Thursday with events geared for the young.
Organizers planned to hold talks at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on crime, education and other issues affecting today's youth as a prelude to teen musical acts scheduled to hit the Superdome stage later in the evening.
Essence is one of the premiere music festivals celebrating black culture and music. It's been held every Independence Day weekend since its inception in 1995, when it marked the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine.
As in years past, the festival tackles themes of importance to African Americans, such as education and the upcoming presidential election. But above all, Essence is a celebration of music.
Opening day was to be all about recognizing newcomers to the music scene, including the Disney Channel's Coco Jones, rapper Diggy Simmons, the Omg Girlz, Roshon Fegan, Katlyn Nichol, Square Off and New...

New Orleans — One of the premier music festivals celebrating black culture and music is branching out, extending its footprint in its 18th year to embrace the next generation of artists while still trumpeting industry veterans such as Aretha Franklin.

Chicago – Perhaps no American artist has chronicled a modern disaster with as much passion and meticulous attention to detail as Spike Lee. His 2006 documentary about the struggles of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts,” was television at its most vital, provocative, wrenchingly powerful and resoundingly humanistic.
The same could easily be said of Lee’s 2010 follow-up effort, “If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise.” It premiered the same year as HBO’s New Orleans-set series, “Treme,” and includes many of the same characters. Of course, in this case, no actors are involved, with the exception of New Orleans residents such as Make it Right project creator Brad Pitt and Phyllis Morton LeBlanc, who sets the tone with a stirring poem (as she did in “Levees”). Lee catches up with several subjects from his previous film, and...

Despite the rain-soaked gray Sunday morning and the somber fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Sandra Bullock managed to get a laugh out of the crowd at Warren Easton Charter High School in New Orleans. Flipping over an hourglass, the Oscar-winning actress joked, "This is all the time I have." Bullock, a part-time New Orleans resident, donated money to help rebuild the school and to open a student health clinic. She appeared at weekend events to pay tribute to those behind the hurricane recovery effort. "I have seen nothing but unimaginable kindness, perseverance and hope right in this room here," said Bullock.

Sandra Bullock, The Today Show, and the Big Easy
We all knew that it would happen eventually. But conventional wisdom has beenthat Sandra Bullock would do her first post-Jesse James scandal interviewwith her Bff, talk show host George Lopez this fall.Luckily forSandy lovers, she found something important to talk about sooner than that. Theinternet is buzzing with the news that the Oscar-winning actress will make anappearance next Tuesday on The Today Show. No, she's not promotinga new film or clearing up any rumors about Jesse and Kat Von D (hopefully MattLauer will be respectful and leave that out of the conversation all together).

Five years ago, a New Orleans native by the name of Terrell became separated from his family — his mother, his sister, his brother and his nieces — in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when he volunteered to help neighbors to safety during the category 5 natural disaster. His story wasn't unlike the ordeals experienced by many other residents in the Gulf Coast region at the time. Down and hard up on his luck, the young man was determined to reunite with his loved ones.

Bullock will be in New Orleans this weekend with Mayor Mitch Landrieu to help cut the ribbon for the new $700,000 health clinic she helped fund at Warren Easton Charter High School, reports People.

While you were sleeping, innovation was putting on a jaunty little cap to wear with its oil-colored capelet, eschewing anything nerdlike such as black T-shirts, and leaving home without its British citizenship.
1. What is a disaster without conspiracy theories? Eco-warriors, big business, the U.S. government, and Kim Jong Il could all be responsible for the Deepwater oil spill, depending which paranoia you subscribe to. As Bp delays tests on the new cap on the Deepwater oil spill, Mitch Landrieu, the new mayor of New Orleans is profiled in the Nyt today.
2. After Consumer Report's somewhat off-message iPhone 4 review, Apple has found itself some allies--which it might need to prevent another dip in its stock like yesterday's. As well as FastCompany's very own Kit Eaton picking holes in Cr's incomplete science, an electromagnetic engineer called Bob (he's also Global Head of Research & Chief Analyst at TowerGroup) pours cold water on the report.
