- On September 11, 2015, less than 2 weeks after her 40th birthday, she was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer after visiting the hospital with a cramp in her side. In August 2016 she became famous for using her acting skills to document her chemotherapy treatments in a unique way - by recreating iconic movie moments. Karen took a slew of props with her when she visits New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell hospital once every three weeks to recreate moments from films and like Forrest Gump, Rocky Balboa, Star Wars, Game of Thrones. She originally began sharing photos of herself on her Instagram account to calm concerned friends and family members. When a pal suggested she stage her photos, she, her friends and her family members began bringing props from home for the recreations. Some of her photos are simple, featuring cowboy hats and boots to recreate Thelma & Louise, while others are more elaborate, like one containing, battle shields, long wigs and a plastic dragon to portray Game of Thrones. She died on May 30, 2017 after 20 months of fighting with colon cancer, less than 3 months before her 42nd birthday.
