The corporate sword has fallen on CNN en Español, as a major reorganization at the cable news network brought layoffs and uncertainty for those who remain — and a mourning for the ambitious project that once sought to tap a Spanish-speaking audience in the hundreds of millions “from Alaska to Patagonia,” as CNN executives once said, including the fast-growing Hispanic population in the United States.
“[The layoffs were] basically the end of the network as we know it,” one CNN en Español staffer told TheWrap when the news first broke May 25.
It’s “ridiculous given the demographics in the U.S.A. that they couldn’t make a viable product for that marketplace,” that person added.
But CNN CEO Chris Licht has stated he saved CNN en Español as a cable channel, and individuals close to the decision said Warner Bros. Discovery is making moves to ensure the Spanish-language network’s future. The company...

As international journalists covering the unrest in Egypt have been forced by angry mobs to retreat to their hotel rooms, President Hosni Mubarak (in an interview with ABC News’ Christiane Amanpour) condemned the violence being perpetrated by some of his supporters, but said he could not immediately make good on his promise to resign because it would plunge the country into “chaos.” We talked to Tony Maddox, executive vice president of CNN International, about how the news network is handling the particularly volatile situation.

Anderson Cooper will continue to report from Egypt after getting attacked by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday.
"You cannot cover stories like this with agency photos and sitting behind a desk in the U.S. You can do it in a safe and responsible way and continue to be at the heart of this story," CNN International Chief Tony Maddox told The Hollywood Reporter.

When the catastrophic earthquake rumbled through Haiti before dinnertime Tuesday, it set in motion a response among the networks molded in part by the South Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina six years ago.
It's impossible to compare the human tragedies. Yet each taught journalists lessons in bringing back video amid a crumbled infrastructure, how to deal with widespread suffering and how to equip personnel, build supply lines and keep everyone safe and healthy.
Coverage this week has been informed by those experiences, just as much as the individual experiences of journalists such as NBC's Brian Williams and CNN's Anderson Cooper, who covered each of the stories. And though no one is counting the bills right now, covering the Haitian earthquake is going to be expensive.
"It's one of those times when every penny you invest in this coverage is worth it," said NBC News president Steve Capus. "We have the resources to do this.
