The Toronto International Film Festival announced more selections Tuesday for the upcoming 2014 edition of the annual awards season kick-off. The majority of the festival's program was announced last month, but this group includes intriguing world premieres from notable directors such as Todd McCarthy ("The Cobbler") and Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Beyond the Lights"). A number of the titles revealed have screened at other festivals including the underrated "Infinitely Polar Bear" and "Laggies" from Sundance as well as Cannes players "Two Days, One Night," "The Search" and "Clouds of Sils Maria." And yes, the presence of "Sils Maria," which is a favorite of this particular writer, means Kristen Stewart will likely hit one of the festival's many red carpets. As you'd expect for Toronto, the world premieres feature some big names including Josh Hutcherson and Benicio Del Toro in "Escobar: Paradise Lost," Jean Dujardin in "The Connection (La French)," Dustin Hoffman in "Boychoir,...

Mia (Ruth Vega Fernandez) is on the traditional track: successful architecture career, a wonderful apartment in the city, and she’s engaged to her boyfriend of many years, Tim (Joakim Nätterqvist). Mia and Tim travel to celebrate the 60th birthday and engagement of Mia’s father, Lasse (Krister Henriksson) to Elisabeth (Lena Endre). Mia’s younger brother, Oskar (Tom Ljungman), introduces her to Elisabeth’s daughter, Frida (Liv Mjönes). The idea is for everyone to get along like one big happy family. As with so many Scandinavian films I’ve seen recently there is so much beauty in Kiss Me – from the actors themselves to the lighting as well as the Swedish countryside. Writer and director Alexandra-Therese Keining captures one of the most intimate love stories I’ve seen in years. There is nothing trite or syrupy about Mia and Frida as we witness the evolution of their relationship. Keining...

After a string of announcements, it looks like the Toronto International Film Festival have locked down their line-up and it’s looking like a fantastic slate. Much of the additions today come in the form of previous Cannes premieres, including Michael Haneke‘s Amour (review), Cristian Mungiu‘s Beyond the Hills (review), Abbas Kiarostami‘s Like Someone in Love (review), Bernardo Bertolucci‘s Me and You (review), Hong Sang-soo‘s In Another Country and the Venice premiere Olivier Assayas‘ Something in the Air. Most notably missing is Leos Carax‘s Holy Motors, but we do get a new Michael Winterbottom film titled Everyday. Out of the Discovery section, the biggest film seems to be The Brass Teapot, and indie drama starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano and one can check out all the additions below.

Kiss Me
Written and directed by Alexandra-Therese Keining
Sweden, 2011
Like in Mulholland Drive, the first intimate encounter between the two female leads is delicately depicted. Perfuse with undeniable eroticism and composed with such seductive elegance, this moment is mediated on absolute and instinctive passion. Framed amongst the forbidden circumstances of their carnal convergence, the kiss, when juxtaposed, enkindles an emotional dialectic of forlorn beauty.
With gorgeously regal cinematography and unequivocally captivating performances, this beauty is deeply embedded into Alexandra-Therese Keining’s Kiss Me, a classic tale of love destined to become a classic of its own.
The film centers on Mia (Ruth Vega Fernandez), a tightly wound, anal-retentive woman. With her business partner and fiancé Tim (Joakim Nätterqvist), she visits her father (Krister Henriksson) at his engagement ceremony, where she meets Frida (Liv Mjönes), the free-spirited daughter of his wife-to-be (Lena Endre from the Swedish Millennium Series Trilogy). Initially perplexed by Frida’s unabashed transparency,...

Not Like Others
Stars: Jenny Lampa, Ruth Vega Fernandez, David Dencik | Written and Directed by Peter Pontikis
Bram Stoker is responsible for a great many things. On the one hand, without Dracula we wouldn’t have Bela Lugosi, Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Let The Right One In. On the other, we would be rid of Francis Ford Coppola’s sex-drenched Dracula, Lesbian Vampire Killers and Not Like Others.
Released in Sweden – under the title Vampyrer – in 2008 but only just arriving on DVD in the UK now, the premise is simple: Vampire sisters Vera (Jenny Lampa) and Vanja (Ruth Vega Fernandez) wander the streets of Stockholm by night, combing bars and parties for horny men to seduce and kill, sleeping rough during the day and moaning about how bothersome it is to be a vampire. So far, so aimless…
That’s really as far as the plot goes, apart from...

2008 was a good year for Swedish cinema; one of the finest films to come out of Sweden, Let The Right One In, was released. And so did Not Like Others (original title: Vampyrer). It would be easy to lump these two pictures in together – they’re both Swedish, and they both feature vampires, albeit not your typical vampire. However, this is where the similarities end.
Not Like Others follows two girls, Vera (Jenny Lampa) and her older sister Vanja (Ruth Vega Fernandez) across one fateful night. We are introduced to them in a club, Vera dancing the night away, when she is approached by a member of a biker gang. He forces her to the club’s bathroom, and before he can take things any further Vera has whipped out a blade and cut into his neck.
