Leanne Morgan is set to star in a multi-cam comedy series at Netflix that boasts Chuck Lorre as one of its co-creators, Variety has learned.
Morgan co-created the series with Lorre and Susan McMartin. Netflix has given the untitled show a 16-episode order, while also commissioning two more stand up specials from Morgan. That will mark her second and third specials at the streamer following 2023’s “I’m Every Woman.”
“I’ve dreamed of this since childhood, and I can’t believe it has come true! When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom,” Morgan said. “It just goes to show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”

Netflix is investing in Leanne Morgan.
The streamer has handed out a 16-episode, straight-to-series order for an untitled multicamera comedy starring the stand-up comedian. Comedy kingpin Chuck Lorre (Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) co-created the series alongside Morgan and Susan McMartin.
Netflix says the untitled comedy revolves around Leanne, whose life “takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and Jell-o salad.”
Morgan broke out thanks in large part to her 2023 Netflix stand-up special I’m Every Woman, which reached the top 10 comedy specials on the streamer. The Tennessee native has been in the comedy industry for 25 years and started out playing local comedy clubs before rising...

Leanne Morgan’s current tour is called Just Getting Started, and the 58-year-old comedian is living up to that with a comedy series and two more specials at Netflix. The streamer has given a 16-episode order to an untitled multi-cam sitcom, headlined by Morgan in her TV acting debut and executive produced by top comedy showrunner Chuck Lorre. Additionally, Netflix has picked up two more stand-up specials from Morgan following the success of her first one, the 2023 Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman.
Co-created by Morgan, Lorre and Susan McMartin, the Untitled Leanne Morgan Project will follow Leanne whose life is upended when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family, she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and jello salad.

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

Exclusive: In her third promotion in a little over three years, Netflix’s Head of Drama Jinny Howe is further expanding her oversight to all of the streamer’s drama areas, adding Spectacle + Event, current series and shows coming out of Netflix’s roster of overall deals to her purview.
The elevation is part of an executive restructuring by Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Head of Ucan Scripted series, who is streamlining the division to have two direct reports, VP Drama Howe and VP Comedy Tracey Pakosta, who has been overseeing both development and current.
As part of the restructuring, the UK-based Kelly Luegenbiehl, VP of Franchise and Spectacle Series, who reported to Friedlander, will be departing after more than eight years. The Spectacle + Event, current and overall deal drama teams will now report to Hawe.

Netflix is ready to debut its scripted comedy featuring rapper Vince Staples.
The Vince Staples Show, which was created by Staples, Ian Edelman and Maurice Williams and EPed by Kenya Barris, will premiere on February 15.
The comedy was first announced in 2022.
Set in Long Beach, CA, the fictional series is loosely inspired by Staples’ life. Here’s the official logline: Who’s Vince Staples? Well, that’s a tricky question. He’s kind of famous, but he’s not. He’s kind of rich, but he’s not. He’s also kind of a criminal. But he’s…not? Follow him on his daily adventures, where anything that can go wrong usually does.
The show is executive produced by Staples, Barris (Khalabo Ink Society), Corey Smyth, Edelman (Edelgang), Williams, and William Stefan Smith.
Staples has released four studio albums, Summertime 06, Big Fish Theory, FM! and his self-titled album in July...

It’s de rigeur now when a show is canceled: Disappointed studio execs and producers promise fans that they’ll shop their orphaned series to other outlets. Of course, most of the time, nothing happens — after all, who wants to pick up a show that no one was watching in the first place? But sometimes, the stars align: In the case of “Cobra Kai,” for example, Netflix was able to nab that show when YouTube got out of the scripted originals business, and turn it into a monster hit.
Netflix has picked up several canceled series over the years (up next: NBC’s “Manifest”). But the case of “Girls5eva” is a bit unique. The Universal TV comedy aired for two seasons on sister Peacock to raves from TV critics — but crickets in the general population. That’s despite the rapid-fire pop-culture infused comedy and music at the heart of the show,...

Randall Park is a freshly minted cinephile.
The “Fresh Off the Boat” actor credited upcoming Netflix sitcom “Blockbuster” for introducing him to new films. Park plays store manager Timmy Yoon at the last Blockbuster in the world, located in Bend, Oregon. While the real-life store was the subject of 2020 documentary “The Last Blockbuster,” Netflix took a fictionalized approach for a sitcom about a failing business.
“My initial hesitation was, ‘Oh, it’s about Blockbuster, is it just gonna be like a pure kind of nostalgia play?'” Park told Screenrant about signing on to the series, streaming November 3.
Yet “Blockbuster” turned out to be film school 101 for Park.

Nothing lasts 5eva. On Thursday, news broke that Peacock series “Girls5eva” is heading to Netflix for Season 3. The first two seasons of the Tina Fey-Robert Carlock comedy will be available on both Peacock and Netflix.
The reality is that “Girls5eva” was canceled by Peacock sometime after Season 2 concluded in June, two people with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire. The news just never went public, and negotiations between studio Universal Television and Netflix already were underway.
Despite being beloved by both Peacock execs and critics (Season 1 is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 percent score; Season 2 is “certified fresh” at 95 percent), “Girls5eva” was a consistent underperformer, we’re told.
That led to Peacock passing on a third season, a “business decision,” we’re told. In the old days, that would be a death sentence for a show. These are not the old days, and so it was...

In “Girls5eva,” the eponymous girl group declares that they’re “gonna be famous 5eva cause 4eva’s too short.” But the show’s run on Peacock was destined to be much shorter, as the Tina Fey-produced series is taking its third season elsewhere: Netflix has now acquired and renewed the series for a third season, while holding co-exclusive rights to stream the first two. That means Seasons 1 and 2 will be offered on both Netflix and original home Peacock, but Netflix will be the exclusive home for Season 3.

The deal for the series also includes rights to Girls5eva’s first two seasons, which will stream on both Peacock and Netflix. Stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps will all return for the musical comedy’s third season on the streaming giant. The deal for the series also includes rights to Girls5eva’s first two seasons, which will stream on both Peacock and Netflix. The series is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime next year, ahead of the third season’s debut, in a move similar to what the streamer did when it acquired Cobra Kai from YouTube.

“Girls5eva” has been renewed for Season 3, but the comedy series will be moving to Netflix from Peacock for its next outing.
Variety has learned that Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home for Season 3, while sharing Seasons 1 and 2 with Peacock. The show, which follows the surviving members of a one-hit wonder girls group from the 1990s as they reunite in the present, aired its second season finale on Peacock beginning in June.
The move marks a homecoming of sorts for “Girls5eva” creator Meredith Scardino and executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and Jeff Richmond. Netflix previously aired the series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which was co-created by Fey and Carlock, with Scardino serving as a writer and eventually co-executive producer and Richmond serving as composer and executive producer.
“We are so happy to bring ‘Girls5eva’ to Netflix,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s vice president of comedy series. “Just like the show,...

The band has a new home: Girls5eva is moving to Netflix from rival streamer Peacock for its third season.
The move is a shock as it’s one of the first original series to move between rival streaming services but Deadline hears that the Tina Fey-produced series was actually canceled at Peacock before Netflix swooped in to save it.
Although the comedy series, which stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell, has been well received critically and was arguably the closest thing to an awards contender that the streamer had, Girls5eva wasn’t one of its most-watched shows and didn’t bring in the same audiences that the likes of dramas Bel Air and Dr. Death did.
We hear that the streamer was forced to make the tough decision to prioritize other shows and cancel it after its second season finished in June.

For decades, there was a standard path to sitcom stardom: Start out in standup, get spotted by a network or studio scout, land a development deal and then hopefully star in a hit comedy based on your routine. That pipeline peaked in the 90s, when comedians like Tim Allen, Roseanne Barr, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano and others were examples of how that pattern worked. Until it didn’t. Ensemble comedies (often single-camera) like “The Office” and “Modern Family” began to overshadow those comic-driven laffers.
But as streamers entered the scene over the last decade, standup specials became a quick way to build a library of content featuring established, top-tier talent. Now, with standup once again in the forefront, a new kind of comedy ecosystem is forming — with Netflix, in particular, eager to lead the charge.

Netflix seems to think that Tim Robinson should stay. The streamer officially renewed “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” for a third season, as announced on May 6.
The critically-acclaimed sketch series has won two WGA Awards for its respective seasons, taking home awards in the Comedy/Variety category in both 2020 and 2022. Former “Saturday Night Live” writer Tim Robinson co-created, writes, and stars in the series alongside co-creator Zach Kanin. Heaven, hell, and office romances: real-life couple and comedy duo Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone lead Netflix comedy “God’s Favorite Idiot,” premiering on the streamer June 15.
McCarthy and Falcone co-founded On the Day Productions, and have written and produced films like “Tammy,” “The Boss” and “Life of the Party” together with Falcone directing. Now, the creative partners lead “God’s Favorite Idiot,” which is part “Bruce Almighty” and part workplace comedy.
Falcone stars as unassuming tech support employee Clark Thompson who pines after his co-worker Amily Luck (McCarthy). After being struck by lightning, Clark begins to glow — and not just because his crush is reciprocated. Turns out, Clark is now anointed, and must battle Satan (Leslie Bibb) with the help of Amily.
The eight-episode series also stars Kevin Dunn, Usman Ally, Steve Mallory, Chris Sandiford, Ana Scotney, and Yanic Truesdale. “God’s Favorite Idiot” is Oscar nominee McCarthy’s follow-up TV role...

Liz Feldman has lined up her next show at Netflix.
On the anniversary of the series premiere of Dead to Me, the streamer ordered a new series from the show’s creator, Liz Feldman, with the greenlight of No Good Deed.
No Good Deed is a half-hour, "a dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems," according to the official description.
"But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare."
“No Good Deed was inspired by my many late nights during the early pandemic maniacally searching Zillow listings for a way out of my house,” said Feldman.

Meghan Markle’s first animated series under Archewell Productions officially was given the ax by Netflix as the streamer re-evaluates its upcoming slate amid an exodus of subscribers.

It’s been a tough few weeks for Netflix. The streamer lost subscribers for the first time in over a decade and its market value took a battering, losing over 50 billion in one day after its disappointing first quarter earnings.
Laughter, they say, is the best medicine and the streamer will have plenty of those over the next ten days as it gets ready to launch its Netflix Is A Joke festival, a major statement of intent to the comedy community that will see over 330 comedians take to the stage at 288 live shows across Los Angeles with 250,000 tickets sold.

When the Netflix is a Joke festival was first announced in March 2020, it was much smaller in size and scope — and then the pandemic happened. “To have to delay was really disappointing, but it gave us more time to grow the festival substantially because we felt like the idea of celebrating stand-up and comedy took on a whole new meaning,” says Robbie Praw, Netflix’s VP of standup and comedy formats.
The end result, a joint effort between Netflix and Live Nation, takes place in Los Angeles between April 28 and May 8. It features more than 280 events (at last count) across the city at locations ranging from Dodger Stadium, the Forum, Crypto.com Arena and the Hollywood Bowl to major theaters and comedy venues.
Around a dozen of those show will be taped to stream on Netflix, including Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias making history by becoming the first stand-up comedian to ever perform at Dodger Stadium.
