Laura Siegel Larson, the daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Joanne Siegel, has broken her silence about the long-running legal war with Warner Bros. She's fought for many years to "terminate" the studio's control of the Man of Steel by exploiting one aspect of copyright law. In 2008, she experienced success when a federal judge in California determined that her termination notice was valid on the first editions of Action Comics that first told Superman's story. The long ongoing copyright case over who owns the rights to Superman just got very personal. Attorneys for Warner Bros (which owns DC Comics) late Wednesday night claimed Superman heirs attorney Marc Toberoff has “systematically suppressed relevant evidence” and filed a motion (read it here) against the lawyer and the estates of the superhero’s co-creators. The filing seeks terminating sanctions and an evidentiary hearing for November 12. But this morning, Deadline was given a letter (original here) in response from Laura Siegel Larson — the daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Joanne Siegel, who served as the original model for Lois Lane. Larson, herself a retired award-winning journalist now suffering from multiple sclerosis, says she will never give up “fighting for what’s right”. She charges that Warner Bros has spent $35 million on corporate attorneys who now include Daniel Petrocelli, Matthew Kline and Cassandra Seto of O’Melveny & Myers. Here...

The now deceased widow of the iconic comic creator Jerry Siegel, who was also the visual inspiration for Lois Lane, put forth an emotional retort pleading for the multimedia giant to reach an amicable agreement to the creators' estates. With all of the excitement regarding casting and story elements of the upcoming Zack Snyder rendition of the big blue boy scout, the complexities found within the business side of these adaptions may go unseen. The former art model and champion for comic creators' rights brought such matters to the forefront in this letter written before her death in February at the age of 93. December 10, 2010 Jeffrey L. Bewkes Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Time Warner Inc. Dear Jeff, I am Joanne Siegel widow of Jerry Siegel, creator of Superboy and co-creator...

A letter to Warner Bros from the late widow of Superman creator Jerry Siegel has surfaced. Writing to Warner CEO Jeffrey L Bewkes regarding the family's lawsuit with the studio, Joanne Siegel called for an end to the firm's "mean-spirited tactics", Deadline reports. In 2008, a judge ruled that the Siegel estate is entitled to half of the original copyright to Superman, prompting a legal backlash from Warner, who went on to sue Siegel family lawyer Marc Toberoff. The suit remained unresolved when Joanne Siegel passed away last month. "My daughter Laura and I, as well as the Shuster estate, have done nothing more than exercise our rights under the Copyright Act," Siegel wrote (more)...

Wasn't Lana Lang the redhead?
This time around, L.L. will be played by A.A.
Three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will play Lois Lane in the new Superman movie, according to the La Times’s Hero Complex blog.
Director Zack Snyder reportedly called Adams yesterday in Paris to congratulate her. Somewhat surprisingly, Snyder did not use any of the actresses from his new film Sucker Punch, a $82-million action flick that made $19-million in its opening this weekend.
Earlier this year, Henry Cavill was announced as the Man of Steel. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were recently cast as Superman’s adoptive Earth parents, the Kents.
This isn’t Adams’s first time with an on-screen Clark Kent; in 2001, she appeared in the first season of Smallville… because somebody from Smallville should make it into the movie.
Lois Lane has previously been played on screen by such actresses as Phyllis Coates,...

If you're not the type to pay attention to such things, you might not know that people have been fighting over the rights to Superman for decades. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the character but sold the rights for a measly $130 and lived poorly for the bulk of their lives. Joanne Siegel, Jerry's wife and the model used to create the image of Lois Lane, has been fighting to reclaim the...

Superman fans seem split between sympathy and contempt for the estates of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster who have gone after their legal right to reclaim certain aspects of the Man of Steel's copyright. Back in December, Joanne Siegel, wife of Jerry and the model for Lois Lane way back at the beginning, wrote a letter to Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Bewkes, which is heartfelt and puts a human face on all the courtroom drama that has gone on. It will be interesting to see how/if the studio responds and how far-reaching this letter is thanks to the Internet. Normally we would only print an excerpt, but with all due respect and acknowledgment of Deadline as the source, we felt it important to present the entire letter. Please weigh in on your views. Oscar-nominated actor Amy Adams to star opposite Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder's forthcoming Superman film
Amy Adams has been cast as spiky reporter Lois Lane in Zack Snyder's forthcoming Superman film, according to the La Times. She will star opposite British actor Henry Cavill, who was revealed as the new Man of Steel in January.
Adams, now a three-times Oscar nominee following her best supporting actress nod for David O Russell's The Fighter, was told the news on Sunday following a phone call from Snyder. The director, who will work from a concept developed by the Dark Knight team of Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David S Goyer, said Adams was the perfect choice to play the tough yet sensitive journalist who falls for the man from Krypton.
"There was a big, giant search for Lois," Snyder told the Times. "For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role.

Exclusive: Today Lois Lane was cast for Warner Bros' Superman movie reboot. So it's fitting to note that, on February 12th, the widow of Superman co-creator Jerome Siegel died of heart failure in a Los Angeles hospital at age 93. While much has been made of the fact that she was the model for Lois Lane, Joanne Siegel also was a driving force along with the estate of Joe Shuster to recapture the entire original copyright to Superman. The Siegel heirs have already been awarded half the copyright for Superman. And in 2013 the Shuster heirs get the remaining half. After that, neither DC Comics nor Warner Bros will be able to use Superman without a financial agreement with the Siegels and Shusters. There are also stipulations on what parts of the origins story can be used in future Superman movies and which require re-negotiations with the creators' heirs or estates. But...
