The National’s Matt Berninger has confirmed that he is still working on a long-gestating sitcom with his director/actor brother, Tom Berninger. In an interview with NME, he spilled details about the semi-autobiographical series, including its working title: Dos Apes.
According to Berninger, he tabled the project while dealing with writer’s block and depression during lockdown, but now it’s back on. “Not unlike Frankenstein, a lightning bolt has started its heart again!” he said. “It’s called Dos Apes, and with the pandemic, we had to put it down. Dos Apes is alive, and that’s all I can say. There was nothing happening because of the writers strikes and stuff like that, but we’ll see. I’m not going to drown in projects like I was before, but that it is one of them that I really want to do and it might happen.”

The 11th edition of the Peach Music Festival is underway on Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with a roster of artists that highlight the fest’s musical-exploration aesthetic: headliners Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ziggy Marley, Lettuce, and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead all close out the fest today.

Inspired by the vestiges of a bygone industrial age in places like Flint and Ypsilanti, as well as the enduring grandeur of Tahquamenon Falls, Sufjan Stevens’s Michigan was, to borrow from William Butler Yeats by way of Joan Didion, something of a “slouch towards Bethlehem.” Set against the backdrop of a nation grappling with the effect of globalization, the slow creep of post-modern isolationism, and the trauma of 9/11, the album serves as both a freeze-frame of an era and a signpost of a new direction for indie music in 2003.
Michigan was the first entry in Stevens’s 50 States Project, with a proposed album about each state in the United States. The ambitious series was ultimately revealed to be, at least in part, a joke, with only one other album—2005’s Illinois—ever completed.

The avalanche of music docs over the past decade has left very few stones unturned — and more than a few films that can barely justify their running times if not their existence. But one overdue and heretofore untold story is that of Judee Sill, a brilliant, innovative early ‘70s singer-songwriter who was the first artist signed to David Geffen’s Asylum Records, and was labelmates and/or a contemporary of the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, David Crosby and Joni Mitchell. Sill was frequently compared with the latter (to her great annoyance) and although there are few direct musical similarities, they were both among the most original and innovative singer-songwriters of the era: Her music fit early ‘70s Southern California vibe of her label and milieu, but it was stranger, with deep classical influences, wildly unusual structures and voicings and often dark subject matter.

Since filming began all the way back in 2011, it’s been a revolving door of speculation as to what actors and musical acts will make the cut of Terrence Malick‘s Song to Song. As we’re less than 10 days away from the film hitting theaters, we’re now getting a clearer picture.
Along with Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett, we confirmed last month that Iggy Pop, Johnny Rotten, Patti Smith, Lykke Li, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Big Freedia, Diplo, Alan Palomo of Neon Indian, Spank Rock, Dana Falconberry, Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears, and The Black Lips will all be featured in the film.
Now, Pitchfork — along with premiering a featurette — have more details. Along with the aforementioned acts all appearing in some capacity in the film, Tegan and Sara and Florence Welch will also be seen. Lykke Li has a bigger role than expected,...

For the most part, Terrence Malick has favored orchestral arrangements to accompany his films, leaning on original scores and classical pieces to provide their musical foundations. However, he’s changing things up with “Song To Song.” An array of Spotify-ready artists populate the cast and soundtrack, and Pitchfork has the breakdown on who you’ll see and hear in the film — and who you won’t.
Firstly, while he was listed as part of the cast last year, Christian Bale didn’t make the final cut of the movie, nor did performances by Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, and Fleet Foxes.

Jackson C. Frank’s “Blues Run the Game” serves as the emotional centerpiece of This Is Us, providing the thread running through William’s tragic tale. Making two appearances on the NBC hit series, we hear it first in a flashback as William meets Randall’s mother Laurel on a city bus, and again during his final days as he travels back to Memphis and reflects on his life as he knows it’s reaching its end. Though gut-wrenching, Frank’s tragic true story rivals any drama that Hollywood could ever hope to dream up.

Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among a handful of musicians set to appear in Terrence Malick's new movie set in the Austin music scene, IndieWire reports.
Song to Song will follow two couples who become entangled: A pair of struggling songwriters played by Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling and a music mogul and a waitress played by Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman. Billed as a "modern love story," the two couples will "chase success through a rock and roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

Anticipation for 2017’s major festivals is at an all time high, with Coachella‘s lineup serving as the holy grail of the entire season. We’ve already heard some rumors about the alleged headliners, while DJ Khaled inadvertently spilled the beans on his slot at the festival. Now we have another enticing update to ponder with a list that attempts to predict the entire lineup.
A website called TravelGrom has consistently made predictions about Coachella lineups in the past with a high degree of accuracy compared to the average rumor, and they’ve just offered up their projections for 2017. While the information is just conjecture at this point, TravelGrom predicted last year’s lineup with 64% accuracy. If that figure holds true again, over half of the list will wind up on the official lineup.
The alleged lineup includes a diverse array of styles, with representation from Edm, Rock, Rap, Pop and everything in between.

Nearly a year after releasing his latest LP I Love You, Honeybear, Father John Misty played the album cut "Holy Shit" on Thursday's Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Wearing all black, including large black sunglasses, the former Fleet Foxes gave an impassioned performance of the Honeybear track. The beginning of the song has Misty playing with an acoustic guitar until halfway through when a freak-folk breakdown occurs and he begins dancing wildly in front of his band.

Hey, music fans and friends, it's time once again to share my favorite music from 2015.
The songs on my year-end list are not what I consider true "singles" but rather my favorite 25 songs from 2015. I've not heard all the amazing music released this past year, but I do consume a healthy dose of tunes every single day. Below are 13 of those songs with Youtube links if you can't access my Spotify list. Let's proceed, shall we?
1. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" - Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has quickly become my favorite young singer-songwriter. His detail to imagery in both audio and album artwork have very few peers, too. (See image above.)
2. "Rose Mary y Yo" - Carlos Timón - Solar Rapé
Some have said, me included, that this music spins like a Spanish version of Belle & Sebastian meets Jobim!

Love the Coopers
Written by Steven Rogers
Directed by Jessie Nelson
USA, 2015
From the opening credits sequence, Love the Coopers feels like classic studio holiday schmaltz. Santa Clauses ride around town, dogs dressed in Hanukkah and Christmas garb embrace, and families take pictures for greeting cards. The Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal” scores the montage, completing an idyllic portrait of dull but harmless seasonal cheer.
The film appears to be heading towards a whitewashed but benign universe as the principal characters get introduced, suggesting a basic story structure warm and familiar enough to be a Christmas hearth. Charlotte (Diane Keaton) and Sam (John Goodman) Cooper plan a Christmas dinner for their dispersed family, all while their marriage disintegrates due in part to the couple’s age. Their passion has waned as the years have gone by, leading to constant argument over song lyrics, grocery shopping, and seemingly everything else.

It was all the way back in 2011 when Terrence Malick first got cameras rolling on his Austin music scene movie aka "Weightless." All we know so far about the movie is that it's a tale of sexual obsession and betrayal that involves two love triangles, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Holly Hunter, Val Kilmer, Haley Bennett, and many, many more are part of the cast (though who makes the final cut, remains to be seen), and Malick filmed concert scenes at Austin City Limits in 2011 and 2012 featuring Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, and Black Lips. And while there's still no whisper of when this movie might be completed, it seems there's another name that was part of the production. Wyoming Directed by Danya Taymor, Written by Brian Watkins Theater for the New City 155 First Avenue, New York, NY 10003 January 15 - 31, 2015
Spaces on the set of Brian Watkins's new play, Wyoming, are defined almost exclusively by tables -- bar tables, diner tables, kitchen tables, locations that often forge and sometimes force connections between people. Tables are just part of a range of everyday objects, including a locked box, a child's headphones, and a slide projector, that take on symbolic resonance in this meditation on time, choice, secrecy, and -- or perhaps through the lens of -- family. Wyoming, set primarily in the mid-'90s, centers on a Thanksgiving dinner during which the past of the particular family in question becomes unavoidable in various ways and for various, interwoven reasons. This breaking both of bread and of silences is directed by Danya Taymor, niece of the iconic Julie, and features original music from Robin Pecknold,...

They're all pretty dreamy. Or try on their cover of Fleet Foxes' "White Winter Hymnal." Pentatonix's "That's Christmas to Me" was released last month and debuted at No. 9 on the U.S. album sales chart week of release. Before you head out to whatever spooky event you have planned tonight, Arcade Fire have a little treat to share. The band, having wrapped their massive world tour for Reflektor, aren't done sharing a few more goodies with fans. And a pretty nice one landed today. The Montreal-based band dropped "Festi," a 20-minute horror short. It's a gleefully bonkers, lo-fi production, starring the band, that centers around Win Butler's 27th birthday and bunch of scary, wacky stuff that happens. Perhaps more notable than the "plot," is the brace of faces that pop by, including Peter Gabriel, Slash, The National, Fleet Foxes, James Murphy, and Andrew Garfield. And oh, Terrence Malick gets a special thanks. Halloween treats don't get much more endearingly random this, so square away some time and click below. [Pitchfork]...

On Monday, Soundgarden's Chris Cornell will join the Avett Brothers for a performance of "Footsteps." After that, Fleet Foxes member Robin Pecknold will appear Tuesday with special guests for "Corduroy." Then, Wednesday, country singer Dierks Bentley will rock an unnamed song with The Roots and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.

Manchester, Tenn. — The headliners usually get all the ink and this year's group at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is definitely ink-worthy: Paul McCartney, Mumford & Sons and Tom Petty.
It's the down-list acts, though, that make this a particularly strong Bonnaroo lineup with a number of must-see acts you ought to check out before they're so big you'll be standing at the back of the crowd watching them on the video screens.
Here are 10 to see:
Alt-j: This Mercury Prize-winning quartet plays angular pop songs that are oddly intoxicating. Like fellow Brits McCartney and Mumford, the group has a gift for sugary songs that are impossible to resist.
Action Bronson: The burly, bearded rapper from Queens is poised to release his major-label debut later this year and has been whipping up a frenzy in London before returning to the states for Bonnaroo. Expect stage diving, East Coast harmonics and lots of naughty humor.

It seems fair to say that folk-inspired music has, since the final stages of the last decade, experienced a much needed renaissance. From the continuing critical success of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Laura Marling to the all- conquering juggernaut named Mumford & Sons, more and more budding musicians are making their mark with mandolins, banjos and acoustic guitars, and the boom shows no sign of dying down. If said boom helps albums like Country Sleep get the attention they deserve, then I hope it continues for at least another four centuries.
Night Beds is driven by the vision of Winston Yellen, a hyper-talented singer songwriter who wrote this album from a house in Nashville once owned by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. I like to think they would like Country Sleep. It’s a raw, haunting, beautiful piece of work that goes well with a spot of night-time soul-searching.

You don’t have to throw out Little Feat to make room for Fleet Foxes
Google “ways to discover new music” and no less than 89,800,000 results pop up. Tons of websites, blogs, radio stations broadcasting the old-fashioned way and streamlining online, not to mention music sites like Spotify and Radio Paradise are dedicated to the proposition that all people deserve to discover new tunes.
So why are so many of our needles stuck in the “classic rock” groove, playing the same albums since 1992 -- or 1968? Not that there’s anything wrong with continuing to cherish the music we grew up with. For our generation, it would be hard not to: Some of the most enduring music (at least rock, soul, jazz and blues) was made when we were coming of age. But what I find frustrating is the misbegotten mindset that nothing new is worth listening to.

It was announced Monday that Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning on Feb. 28, citing health concerns for his need to step down. In looking back at his career as Pope, Buzzfeed dug up a 2009 Myspace playlist that the Vatican publicized as music from the Holy See.
The playlist was a part of a series of celebrity playlists, put together for the launch of Myspace's UK site. Most of the playlist features expected tracks such as Mozart's "Don Giovanni," but things get interesting with the inclusion of Tupac's "Changes," and Muse's "Uprising." The Vatican explained the choices at the time as “A perfect mix of classical, world and contemporary music. The genres are very different form each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people.”
Take a look at the full playlist below.

Nicholas David’s approach to song selection on Season 3 of The Voice may have been a little different from that of his fellow contestants.
“I never looked at this experience like it was a competition,” says the Minnesota soul man. “I trust in the Spirit and play from my heart. When we live in our minds, there’s division: Race, religion, creed, political beliefs and all that. But I truly feel when you live from your heart, it’s like a truth that connects us all, and we’re able to breathe a deeper breath where everybody is.”

Wasn't easy to whittle this list down to 10, let alone 11, so I picked 12 for 12-12-12. A few of these selections were last minute additions that knocked two other picks out of top spots. Moreover, I decided to include twelve more picks at the end of my selections to show what else was being considered.
Nada Surf The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk)
I've not seen this album on any critics' year-end lists (aside from my managing editor Steve's list, obviously). Not sure why, because Nada Surf released a timeless collection of alt pop-rock songs. This is songwriting 101 -- verse, chorus, verse, bridge. If there is a better pop-rock band in America, let me know. Twenty years in and no sign of lazy rock star bullshit, just plenty of great chiming guitar riffs and hooky-as-hell tunes. Album of the year.

HBO is taking the sharp success of "Girls" and applying the series' sensibilities to the music industry -- by releasing an official soundtrack.
"Girls - Volume 1: Music from the HBO Original Series" will feature music from the first and second seasons of the show. While it won't be available in time for holiday gift lists, the album hit stores on January 8 -- the same week as the show's Season 2 premiere (scheduled for January 13).
Lena Dunham announced the news on Twitter, saying that the "soundtrack drops, hard, on January 8th."
A standard 14-track and an expanded digital edition of the album will be released, featuring songs from bands that fans of the show will be familiar with, including Fleet Foxes, Sleigh Bells, Oh Land, and Fun. (whose guitarist, Jack Antonoff, has been romantically linked to Dunham).
The soundtrack also includes a new song by Santigold, which is eponymous with the series title.

"Girls" fans, rejoice! It was just announced that Lena Dunham's HBO show will be getting a soundtrack.
Due out from record label Fueled by Ramen on Jan. 8, “Girls – Volume 1,” features music from the show and debuts a few exclusive tracks. Standout songs on the album include a new single "Girls" from Santigold, Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" of "Girls" season one fame, and Michael Penn's "On Your Way," a previously unavailable track written exclusively for the "Girls" finale.
"Music is such a huge part of my creative process,” Lena Dunham, the creator of "Girls" said in a statement. “I make playlists to write by and listen to as I head to set in the morning, and I experiment in editing with songs that the characters would love and that accurately reflect their struggles. Season two of HBO's "Girls," from creator-writer-director wunderkind Lena Dunham, premieres January 13. The new season's poster has landed, as have some deleted scenes from season one. Watch as Dunham's Hannah Horvath faces humiliation at her local cupcakery, and gets schooled in respect for menial jobs. A "Girls" soundtrack album is in the works. It will be released by Fueled by Ramen, and includes music from fun., Fleet Foxes, Robyn (whose "Dancing on My Own" was featured in a key scene early in Season 1), Sleighbells and Santigold. You can also check out Dunham's 60-page book proposal, which led to a staggering $3.7 million deal with Random House in October.

So if you wanted to pay money for a Lena Dunham–curated mix of Icona Pop, Fleet Foxes, Robyn, and — of course — Fun., that option will be available to you come January 8. There's also a new Santigold song (titled, appropriately, "Girls,") which you can listen to here. Sadly, "Skyscraper" did not make it onto Volume 1; we have hopes for the second installment.

Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.
"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James You're So Great E.P. (Cobraside)
If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band Transvision Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk rawk palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy Pop Stooge) and drummer James Sclavunos (Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together.

Recent success for Mumford and Sons and others indicates a surge in the popularity of folk music: "When taken along with the success of the Fleet Foxes and Decemberists, the Mumfords’ triumph looks more like a trend than a fluke. Sure enough, Mumford & Sons aren’t the only group topping the Rock Songs chart with a decidedly un-rock mix of instruments like mandolin and strings. The Lumineers, a group out of Colorado, also hit #1 with their song 'Ho Hey.' Last year’s Grammys acknowledged the new trend by putting Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers on stage alongside Bob Dylan, arguably the most important figure in the history of folk music. Just a few weeks ago, the Avett Brothers debuted at #4 on the Billboard charts with 'The Carpenter,' one notch behind Dylan’s 'Tempest.'" Pop Matters Guy Lodge considers whether the December glut of prestige films is...

Cmj day four was the day of the side projects/solo efforts. The best part about covering any festival—Cmj, SXSW, Newport Folk, whatever—is catching the debut of new projects and unprecedented endeavors helmed by your favorite artists. Between Thursday and Friday at Cmj, I caught Mac of Superchunk solo, a preview of the new album from the Friendly Fires’ Eleanor Friedberger, a piano man deluge from Wakey! Wakey’s Michael Grubbs and Poor Moon, the newly formed Seattle band featuring members of Fleet Foxes. Behold, my favorite sets from the second to last day of Cmj!...

Local Natives will soon be at a locality near you. The band has completed a new effort, titled "Hummingbird," out on Jan. 29, and have dropped new song "Breakers" in celebration. It's a little like Fleet Foxes raiding all of Dirty Projectors guitar processors, which is not at all a bad thing. "Hummingbird" was recorded in Los Angeles, Montreal and Brooklyn. In the case of the latter, the quartet hit up The National's Aaron Dessner to produce, out of his Ditmas Park, Brooklyn studio. And of the former, the band actually outfitted their own new recording space in Silverlake. Last we...

Just over a year ago, Terrence Malick stunned concertgoers at the Austin City Limits festival by mixing with the crowd while shooting Christian Bale, who mingled with amongst performers that included Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine and Fleet Foxes. As we predicted, now that "official" production has started on the untitled movie (last year's shoot was said to be pre-production) formerly known as "Lawless," Malick returned to Austin with his cast and crew in tow once again offering up some of the more curious memories of the weekend. First off, Rooney Mara took the stage to play guitar with punk upstarts Black Lips, with some of that footage captured below. Meanwhile, hanging around backstage, the actress joined her co-stars Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender in hanging out with Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine. And oh yeah, there were some rumors and sightings of Emma Stone in Austin as well, perhaps making some kind of appearance,...

Nothing screams frenzy like a celebrity sighting, or two, at a musical festival. Yesterday, “Did you see Ryan Gosling?” texts were already reaching our crew while we battled the heat at the opening day of Austin City Limits Music Festival. We laughed at the mere thought of actually running into a celebrity (aside from the ones we interviewed) amidst at least 50,000 people. Turns out spotting Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara was not as impossible as it seemed if you were watching the Black Lips perform.
According to Rolling Stone, actress Rooney Mara joined the rock band on stage as a faux backup guitar player. Mara very well may be a fan of group, but she was actually working–shooting a scene from Terrence Malick‘s hush hush new movie. Ryan Gosling, who is Mara’s co-star stood to the side of the stage as an onlooker. Oh the joys of life as an actor.

Artists Project Earth, a charity focused on giving artists a framework to pursue their own causes, has announced Rhythms Del Mundo: Africa, the latest in a series of albums that see indigenous artists collaborating with their high-profile Western counterparts. Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleet Foxes, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars are just a few of those contributing. African musicians produced tunes in sessions in Kenya, South Africa, and Swaziland. Side projects are always a differing and intriguing prospect; they evidently don’t get as much attention as a band’s main work, can cause tension between band members, and at the same time are very common in a lot of groups nowadays. The latest side project is that which comes from Fleet Foxes members Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott and their full length debut is an unsatisfactory experience.
It’s hard to completely ignore Fleet Foxes when reviewing Poor Moon as its inevitable the comparisons will be made, and rightly so. Unlike the former, this band doesn’t seem that much of a cohesive unit and on a track like ‘Same Way’ this seems to become apparent. The track pretty much sums up the entire record in that it’s awfully delicate and dainty but with no obvious substance and feels like it lacks real direction.
