Dylan Mulvaney is dreaming big, and one of the characters she would like to play is Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.
In a recent interview, the singer and actress said that her dream theater role was to play Glinda in Wicked, but her “dream dream” was to portray the Harvard Law School student that Reese Witherspoon famously played in the 2001 film.
“My dream though is to do a trans Legally Blonde,” Mulvaney said in an interview with IMDb during SXSW. “I wanna play Elle Woods and have maybe a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. And I think what’s so cool about plugging trans people into existing stories is it inherently changes what the topic is, but in a way that you don’t actually have to do much to the script because it becomes something different — but actually, I think it makes it even more powerful.”

Paramount announced on Monday that its new, musical take on Mean Girls will begin streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on March 5th, coming to international markets at a later date.
Based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical and the beloved 2004 film that inspired it, Mean Girls watches as new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).
When Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay...

The new hit take on the beloved Tina Fey high school comedy shows a lasting appeal, but can the original ever be topped?
Because time is a construct, it’s the year 2024, and the biggest film at the box office is … Mean Girls. That would be the new movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical based on the beloved 2004 film, which feels like a distinctly modern case of IP ouroboros. Despite harsh-to-middling reviews and several trailers noticeably avoiding any of the film’s musical numbers, the new Mean Girls topped the MLK holiday weekend box office with $33m, out-earning the original in absolute terms. And, true to the spirit of the original, the Mean Girls musical movie has generated its own stream of memes – for not knowing it was a musical, for example, or for star Reneé Rapp Regina George-ing a tour bus company owner during a press junket.

The Mean Girls remake—this time with showtunes—was a big win for Paramount Pictures over a long holiday weekend in the States. A film originally pegged and budgeted for Paramount+ until someone realized folks still love the 2004 classic (shocker!), this economical redo of the Lindsay Lohan touchstone galloped to an impressive $33.2 million across its first four days. That matches practically all of its reported $36 million budget right out of the starting gate.
So the movie studio has reasons to pop champagne this week (and maybe send a few bottles over to Reneé Rapp for her diva turn as Gen Z’s very own Regina George). Nonetheless, even audiences who enjoyed what was a pretty down-the-middle reworking of a 20-year-old staple had to be a little peeved by how some fellow moviegoers reacted. Because, speaking purely anecdotally, it seemed like a lot of folks were put off by the whole...

Refresh for latest…: Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka continues its sweet run, crossing the $500M mark globally this weekend. The worldwide cume through Sunday is $505.3M including $329.1M from the international box office — and with Korea, which has a fondness for Hollywood musicals, still to release at the end of the month.
The Timothée Chalamet-starrer added $15.3M in 77 overseas markets this frame with another series of terrific holds in Spain (-1%), Australia (-36%), Mexico (-36%), the UK (-43%) and Brazil (-44%).
Crossing the five-century benchmark also makes Wonka director Paul King’s highest-grossing film ever. Wonka originally opened internationally beginning December 6, 2023 and in North America on December 15, 2023.
WB Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy commented today, “With Wonka, Paul King, producer David Heyman and the amazing cast and crew led by Timothée Chalamet have delivered a truly special musical event.

This article contains spoilers for "Mean Girls."
Every stage-to-film musical adaptation requires reimagining, rearranging, or removing elements that wouldn't gel well with the camera and the editing room. Retelling "Mean Girls" (every version of which has been penned by Tina Fey) involves the monumental assignment of adapting layers-upon-layers of its sources, starting with Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 nonfiction parent book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and then moving onto the original 2004 Mark Waters-directed film based on Wiseman's book, the 2018 Casey Nicholaw-directed Broadway stage musical adaptation (which also features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin), and, finally, the 2024 "Mean Girls" movie musical directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
Naturally, the "Mean Girls" movie musical had to scrap several songs and gags from the Broadway stage musical to leave space for makeovers. Theatre heads who've experienced the stage version are bound to notice some major exclusions, including those listed below.

Paramount’s next iteration of Mean Girls has minted $3.25M in previews. That figure includes 4pm showtimes from yesterday as well as the “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink” early access screenings.
A reminder that Paramount pivoted the release of Mean Girls: It was originally intended for Paramount+, and the test scores screamed, ‘Release this movie theatrically!’.
So far Mean Girls is 3 1/2 stars on Comscore Screen Engine’s PostTrak with 71% women showing up. Of those, 44% were women under 25 with 28% women over 25. Rotten Tomatoes critics are 70% fresh.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM’s is looking to appease guys over MLK weekend with The Beekeeper, which so far has $2.4M from previews last night. The David Ayer directed, Jason Statham movie is booked in 3,303 theaters — and the movie will have the upside of Imax tickets. Beekeeper is 72% fresh with Rotten Tomatoes critics and early exits from PostTrak show a solid 4 stars with 65% guys showing up,...

Exhibitors are lighting candles and saying prayers that Paramount’s feature musical redux Mean Girls carries them big-time throughout January after a dry spell caused by the double strikes. Ya see, for the next three weeks following Mean Girls, there isn’t a major studio wide release until Apple Original Films’ Argylle arrives on February 2 via Universal.
On tracking, Mean Girls is excellent with women, and poised to clear $30 million over the four-day MLK weekend at 3,782 theaters. Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios’ R-rated Jason Statham action title The Beekeeper, solid with men and multicultural audiences, is looking at $16M Friday-Monday.

Comscore reported that the first week of 2024 box office at $172.6M was lagging 8% behind the same frame in 2023. However, last year’s MLK weekend will be hard to beat: It was led by the fifth frame of 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way of Water with $39.8M, and the...

A lot has changed in the 20 years since Regina George and the Plastics first stalked the halls of North Shore High. Every teenager now has a smartphone. Social media has given several generations new ways to slay, shame, and talk shit. The Internet is one massive Burn Book. And yet, if Mean Girls 2024 proves anything, it’s that some things truly are forever: There will always be cliques, there will always be drama, mathletes will always rap about their calculus skills, school buses are still a hazard, and high...

Viewers took to social media to express their confusion and consternation after the first trailer for Mean Girls—the new film adaptation of the stage musical adaptation of the beloved 2004 film—dropped in November with no singing at all. Many wondered if this was just an ordinary remake for a new teen generation. After all, the tagline is “This is not your mother’s Mean Girls.” More than just aggrieved musical theater fans questioned whether producers were ashamed to let audiences know that this was indeed a movie musical.
The good news is that this Mean Girls proudly wears that genre like a homecoming crown, as the embrace of storytelling through song and dance is front and center. That was to be expected, as the musicalization of Mean Girls was largely a success back in 2018 when it opened on Broadway, and in large part because Tina Fey’s book for...

Mean Girls 2024, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., and starring a vibrant ensemble including Renée Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey (who also wrote the screenplay), Jaquel Spivey, and many others brings the classic 2004 teen comedy into the modern era with updated cultural references and a more diverse cast. However, the film struggles to justify its existence beyond surface-level changes and ultimately falters in delivering a coherent, impactful story that offers little new or compelling.
Mean Girls is adapted from Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes and became a Broadway musical in 2018 featuring music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The new movie closely follows the plot of the original film and centers around Cady Heron (Rice), a naive teenager who spent her childhood in Africa with her parents. Mark Waters’ hit comedy about the savage jungle of high school cliques, Mean Girls, had enough instant-classic dialogue and memorable characters to become a touchstone for the generation either in or fresh out of their teens when it was released in 2004 and those who have discovered it in the years since. With screenwriter Tina Fey continuing to steer the vehicle, the property navigated the transition to Broadway musical in 2018 with plenty of its original charms intact and some even fortified thanks to the expressive magic of characters bursting into songs that reveal their inner lives.
The show was never going to keep Stephen Sondheim awake nights with its workmanlike tunes composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond. But Nell Benjamin’s frequently clever lyrics delivered laughs and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s flair for kinetic showmanship made it a high-energy explosion of hormonal insecurity, malice, vulnerability and hard-won life lessons. New year, new look. Tina Fey returns in a film adaptation of the 2017 musical adaptation of her breakout 2004 comedy that catapulted many young stars, including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried. The new Mean Girls film previously released a trailer that somewhat hid that it was based on a Broadway musical. Paramount has unveiled a new “Revenge Party” trailer that showcases a bit more of its musical elements, but for the most part, looks like a straight-up remake of the original. Audiences at the Taylor Swift concert film already got a glimpse of a teaser for the new Mean Girls movie musical, and now Paramount is giving everyone else a chance: The studio released the first official trailer today.
Watch it above.
The film, based on the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 film, stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis ‘Imi’ike, Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Jaquel Spivey as Damian Hubbard, Avantika as Karen Shetty, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Jenna Fischer as Ms. Heron, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, Ashley Park as Madame Park, Tina Fey as Ms. Norbury, Tim Meadows as Mr. Duvall.
The trailer does a nice job of establishing the cliques of cool kids, outsiders and, of course, the mean girls. What it doesn’t really showcase, for some reason, are the musical numbers, so maybe that’ll come in the next trailer.

The first trailer for the movie adaptation of the “Mean Girls” musical has officially arrived, so get in loser, we’re going back to Northshore.
Much like the teaser that ran ahead of the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film, the footage not only introduces the new Plastics, Cady, Janis and more, but also contains plenty of moments from the original movie — and even an easter egg for the stage production.
We first meet Angourie Rice’s Cady, who is of course struggling in her new school. But, as we know, she quickly befriends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), who protect her from Regina George (Renee Rapp) — who apparently causes lights to flicker when she enters.
We also get a look at the performance of “Jingle Bell Rock” — though apparently, much more, uh, explicit, this time — along with Tina Fey’s Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows’ Mr.

Life as a Plastic still is fantastic, 20 years later. But this time, it’s a new era of high school cliques.
The “Mean Girls” movie musical adaptation, starring Broadway breakout and “Sex Lives of College Girls” alum Renée Rapp as Regina George, debuted its first teaser in theaters ahead of Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film. It’s now been made available online.
“Mean Girls” follows a new crop of popular girls, led by Regina (Rapp) and rounded out by Karen (Avantika) and Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood). “Mare of Easttown” and “Senior Year” star Angourie Rice plays new girl outsider Cady, the character originated by Lindsay Lohan. Auli’i Cravalho stars as Janis and “Strange Loop” actor Jaquel Spivey plays Damian, the fellow misfits who befriend Cady and orchestrate a covert mission for her to infiltrate the Plastics to ultimately take down Regina’s reign once and for all.

The hit 2004 movie Mean Girls is getting a musical update!
Based on the original movie and the Broadway musical adaptation, this new version gives a fresh, updated take on the story that is more with the current times than the early 2000s like it’s predecessor.
Tina Fey, who wrote both the movie and the book for the Broadway musical, has updated the script from both, and has adapted it into a new movie version of the musical, with music by her husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.
Here is the synopsis: “Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George.

Today is October 3. And while that might just seem like a mundane date to the average person, it's a celebratory day for fans of the high school comedy "Mean Girls." It's the day hottie Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) asks new student Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it is. As Cady says in voiceover, "On October third, he asked me what day it was." And then we watch that moment play out. It's such a simple moment in the movie, but "Mean Girls" fans have latched on to it, and they honor it every fall. But they'll have something more to celebrate in 2024.
Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of "Mean Girls." That's right, it's been 20 years since the girls went wild and North Shore High School was upended by the infamous Burn Book created by The Plastics. Though the movie won't actually celebrate its proper anniversary until the...

Mean Girls: The Musical was initially developed for a streaming debut on Paramount+, but the studio has now decided to give the movie a theatrical release. Mean Girls: The Musical will hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
Paramount pulled a similar move last year with Smile, a horror movie also developed for the streaming service before positive test screenings led them to release it in theaters. That proved to be the right choice, as the movie went on to gross over $200 million with a sequel on the way. Paramount must be hoping for a repeat of that success by pushing the release of Mean Girls: The Musical to theaters.

Tina Fey is back to push her students in the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum confirmed she is reprising the role of math teacher Ms. Norbury for the upcoming musical take on the beloved 2004 high school comedy. Tim Meadows is also back as Principal Duval.
“We couldn’t age out. Teachers work forever,” Fey said during “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” adding, “I want it to be like when Gilligan from ‘Gilligan’s Island’ would be at a trade show and you’d be like, ‘Oh, he looks so old in his little hat.’ That’s my goal.”
“Mean Girls” left off with Fey’s Ms. Norbury being cleared of “pusher” drug charges as written in the salacious Burn Book by Cady (Lindsay Lohan). It’s unclear whether the movie musical is a direct remake of the original film, with Norbury dealing with a similar predicament.

Tina Fey is set to reprise her original “Mean Girls” role in the upcoming movie musical adaptation, which she’s also writing and producing.
The writer-comedian wrote the original 2004 film, in which she also co-starred alongside Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams as Ms. Norbury. She then went on to write the book for the Tony-nominated Broadway musical adaptation and the script for the upcoming movie based on that musical.
During a Thursday appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” Fey also revealed that Tim Meadows, who originated the role of Principal Duvall, is also returning for the Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.–directed film.

Tina Fey isn’t finished with Mean Girls or Ms. Norbury just yet: The former SNL star announced last night that she’ll reprise her role of math teacher in the upcoming musical movie version of the 2004 movie.
And Tim Meadows is coming along for the ride: He’ll reprise his role of Principal Duval.
After making the announcement on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, Fey cracked, “Teachers work forever. I want it to be like when Gilligan from Gilligan’s Island would be at a trade show and you’d be like, ‘Oh, he looks so old in his little hat.’ That’s my goal.”
Fey, of course, wrote the original film and then years later wrote the book for the stage musical version (with music by husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin) that made its Broadway debut in 2018.

Fetch: still not happening. But the Mean Girls movie musical adaptation? Definitely a thing. Casting continues on the film, with Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey all joining the ensemble,.
Tina Fey, who wrote and appeared in the 2004 cinematic version, and oversaw the writing of the musical, is still at the forefront here, though Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne are directing, with music from Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.
In the film, Lindsay Lohan played Cady Heron, who goes to a regular American high school after years of homeschooling from her zoologist parents on a research trip in Africa. Concerned she won't make friends, she eventually forms a connection with the ruling clique the "Plastics" and things go well until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), the ex-boyfriend of queen Plastic Regina George (Rachel McAdams), and it all spirals from there.
