Next Goal Wins is a dramatization of the real-life story told in the documentary of the same name, following the World Cup aspirations of the American Samoa soccer team a decade ago. In the new movie, Michael Fassbender plays the team’s coach, Thomas Rongen, who is tasked with bringing the team respectability after a long, long history of losing. Fassbender said that he’d always wanted to work with the film’s Oscar-winning writer and director, Taika Waititi, and that he didn’t feel constrained by the real-life Rongen as he tried to develop the character himself. The marketing for Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins promotes the film as an underdog sports comedy about an ill-fated South Pacific soccer team, full of the highs and mostly lows of a struggling squad trying to make good.

In trailer two for Searchlight Pictures’ Next Goal Wins, writer/director Taika Waititi jokes that he went into the comedy knowing nothing about soccer…and came out knowing even less. The new trailer also finds Waititi explaining that he was attracted to the sports film based on real events because it’s a story about triumphing over adversity.
The underdog comedy stars Michael Fassbender as soccer coach Thomas Rongen. Oscar Kightley, Kaimana, David Fane, Rachel House, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, Semu Filipo, Lehi Falepapalangi, Will Arnett, and Elisabeth Moss also star in the PG-13 comedy.
Taika Waititi and Iain Morris wrote the screenplay, with Waititi, Jonathan Cavendish, Garrett Basch, Mike Brett, and Steve Jamison producing.
Next Goal Wins opens in theaters on November 17, 2023.

Searchlight will sail through award season with Venice winner “Poor Things” and Telluride hit “All of Us Strangers,” but the specialty distributor slotted Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” for audience-friendly Toronto for a reason. The world premiere audience responded warmly to what one-time Toronto People’s Choice winner Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”) calls “a true understory” sports tale. He was developing for some time Steve Jamison and Mike Brett’s 2014 documentary about the infamously losing American Samoan soccer team who recover under heavy-drinking Dutch coach Thomas Rongen (a miscast Michael Fassbender), and eventually found a window in his schedule to film in Hawaii.
Early Twitter TIFF response ranged from the oft-repeated “crowd-pleaser” and “sweet” to “imperfect but endearing.” Waititi has had a stellar run, from “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Thor: Ragnarok” through “Jojo Rabbit,” which won the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay. On “Next Goal Wins,” critics will be less effusive.

All film festivals face a challenged season ahead as most onscreen talent will be forced to sit this one out due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Just last week, MGM and Luca Guadagnino yanked “Challengers” from the Venice opening night slot and shifted the movie entirely to April of next year.
But the Toronto International Film Festival forges ahead with a nevertheless starry lineup this year of 60 films across the Galas and Special Presentations sections, as announced Monday morning. The festival has not made an opening night selection but has so far also programmed Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Ladj Ly’s “Les Indésirables.”
Among the world premieres are Ellen Kuras’ “Lee,” starring Kate Winslet as war photographer Lee Miller and Andy Samberg as Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman; Viggo Mortensen’s directorial effort “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” a Western starring himself and Vicky Krieps; Craig Gillespie...

Writer/director Taika Waititi highlights his losing credentials at the beginning of the official Next Goal Wins trailer. He lost out on a Best Picture Oscar for Jojo Rabbit and even missed out on taking home a Teen Choice Award for Thor: Ragnarok. Of course, given that Next Goal Wins is about a team of losers, Waititi refrains from boasting about his Oscar win for Jojo Rabbit‘s screenplay, his Independent Spirit Awards win for Reservation Dogs, or his Writers Guild Awards win.
Next Goal Wins is inspired by a true story that the trailer teases “pretty much actually happened.” Michael Fassbender leads the cast as soccer coach Thomas Rongen, a down-on-his-luck, recently fired coach who is charged with turning around the world’s worst soccer team. Rongen reluctantly takes over head coach duties after the American Samoa soccer team lost to Australia 31-0 in 2001.

One of the major new movie releases this week poses a follow-up to the old chestnut about the friendship between a boy and his dog. So, does that extend into manhood? And would they be great “travel’ bros’ as in a buddy “road trip” adventure? Well, one of the silver screen’s “hunkiest” (maybe magical) leading men aims to explore that as he does double duty in front of and behind the camera. It’s a kibble-flavored popcorn flick as movie-goers embark on a hero’s journey alongside a lovable but difficult Dog.
The film’s title refers to Lulu (played by a trio of Belgian Malinois), a military canine trained to go into battle in the Middle East.

In February of 1989 a fantastic gem from director Joe Dante was released into theaters called The Burbs.
Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Rick Ducommun starred in what has become a Saturday night, cult classic where suburbanites at the end of a culdesac in Everywhere, U.S.A. went a little nuts when they began suspecting their neighbors of nefarious activities.
“Remember what you were saying about people in the ‘burbs, Art, people like Skip, people who mow their lawn for the 800th time, and then Snap? Well, That’S Us. It’S Not Them, That’S Us. We’Re the ones who are vaulting over the fences, and peeking in through people’s windows. We’re the ones who are Throwing Garbage In The Street, And Lighting Fires. We’Re The Ones Who Are Acting Suspicious And Paranoid, Art. We’Re The Lunatics. Us. It’S Not Them. It’s us.

Adultery, small-town secrets, murder, penis injuries, sex, lies and Elvis impersonations – if you were looking for a modern version of Peyton Place jacked up on steroids and white wine spritzers, Big Little Lies was your go-to Sunday night viewing. Accidental president. Vietnam. Civil Rights Act. Bully. This is Lyndon B. Johnson’s legacy, or at least how he’s often remembered. New HBO film All the Way seeks to illuminate many sides of the man who stepped into the highest office in the land after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Bryan Cranston plays Lbj in the film, premiering on HBO tonight, following his Tony-winning turn as the president in All the Way on Broadway. After he’d already done extensive research and study of the play’s text (itself thoroughly researched by playwright Robert Schenkkan), Cranston went on a second visit to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, TX, and that’s where the person of Lbj really clicked for the actor. “The character is always outside of you until you hopefully allow it to seep in. Then it becomes a part of you,” Cranston told HitFix.
