Natalie Portman is an Oscar-winning actress who has been quite prolific throughout her three decade film career, but how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 16 of Portman’s greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Portman made her acting debut when she was just 13-years-old with “Leon: The Professional” (1994), which cast her as a teenager teaming up with a hitman (Jean Reno) to avenge her family’s murder.
Her first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actress for “Closer” (2004). The role of Alice, a stripper dating a writer (Jude Law) in love with another woman (Julia Roberts), brought her a Golden Globe victory, though the Academy went with Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) instead.
Portman didn’t go Oscar-less for too long. Just six years later, she reaped a Best Actress victory for playing an obsessive ballerina in the psychological thriller “Black Swan...

Throughout the five years in which Lyndon B. Johnson was the President of the United States, his First Lady––Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson––took note of everything. The Lady Bird Diaries, directed by Dawn Porter, is built on archival photo and video as well as audio from Lady Bird herself. For the duration of the Johnson Administration, Mrs. Johnson recorded 123 hours of audible diary entries. From these revealing documents, Porter forms a sympathetic yet clear-eyed portrait of a compassionate woman in an extraordinary position.
Based on Julia E. Sweig’s biography Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight and the podcast In Plain Sight: Lady Bird Johnson, The Lady Bird Diaries opens on November 22nd, 1963 in Dallas. “It all began so beautifully…,” Lady Bird recalls. The immediate aftermath of the JFK Assassination is described in great detail by the new First Lady, thrust into a role she was never eager to play.

The thing that strikes you first is her voice.
Lady Bird Johnson recorded 123 hours of audio tapes recounting the ins and outs of her husband Lyndon Johnson’s administration. The recordings form the spine of Dawn Porter’s illuminating new documentary, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” but they don’t just give a chronological sequence of events. These recordings are an artistic achievement in their own right, primary-source history executed with insight and wit, and as a kind of diaristic blank verse. It helps that Johnson had worked as a journalist; she has a way with words that’s deceptive because she’s not (overly) flowery, though her vocabulary is immense. Instead, she’s direct, spare in her descriptions, with her Texas drawl giving musicality to her prose. The space between the drama of her saying “I want to know what is going on, even if to know is to suffer...

Before “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” became synonymous with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, the song from Michael Bay’s 1998 science fiction disaster flick Armageddon had its beginnings in another romance. Performed by Aerosmith, the power ballad was written by prolific song writer Diane Warren, who was inspired by an exchange between Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin.
In her new memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand writes about lying in bed with Brolin one night, when he told her, “I don’t want to fall asleep.

We’re hours away from Barbra Streisand’s memoir, My Name is Barbra, and stories are starting to emerge from the long-anticipated tome. In a new interview with the BBC, Streisand recounted one of the many tales she tells in the 992-page book — and it’s an impressive flex.
In the book, Streisand admitted to some hilarious diva-like behavior, including the time she called up Apple CEO Tim Cook to complain about the way Siri was pronouncing her name.
“My name isn’t spelled with a ‘Z,'” she said.

In many ways, John F. Kennedy was the first made-for-tv president. His youthful charisma during the first televised presidential debates in 1960 against a less polished Richard Nixon is considered a turning point in that historic and generation-defining election. When glamorous first lady Jackie Kennedy conducted a televised tour of the White House (another first) in 1962, it was a worldwide sensation, propelling the Camelot couple to the status of American royalty. Which is why, 60 years after his shocking assassination in Dallas on the afternoon of Friday, November 22, 1963—one of the first “You remember where you were” moments in the still-young medium of TV—JFK’s death continues to resonate, as do the images from the four days of national mourning that followed. From the moment CBS anchor Walter Cronkite interrupted an episode of daytime soap As the World Turns to announce the shooting, the grieving nation was transfixed, using the TV...

One talented actor is sought for what could be considered a role of a lifetime. “Jackie Unveiled,” a one-woman drama about the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis that intends to “peek behind the façade of America's most private public figure,” will hold Equity Principal Auditions in Los Angeles for the title role. Naturally, for a role like this, the bar for prospective talent is set incredibly high. The female actor, aged 18 or older, must be able to portray the first lady at the ages of both 38 and 64; at the former age, “a sophisticated, sexually manipulative, fiercely protective mother,” and at the latter attempting to “put her life in perspective as she faces her own mortality.” The team, which includes the drama’s writer Tom Dugan and director Jenny Sullivan, will see talent Sept. 26 in Beverly Hills, California. There will be an initial workshop Dec. 4–9, with rehearsals slated to begin Jan.

The Crown tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, as the fragile British social order established after the Second World War breaks apart.
Based on the award-winning play The Audience, the series reunites creator-writer Peter Morgan, known for The Queen, with director Stephen Daldry and The Queen producer Andy Harries.
The second season begins with soldiers in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces fighting an illegal war in Egypt, and ends with the downfall of her third prime minister Harold Macmillan after a devastating scandal.
Netflix said the second season will bear witness to the end of the age of deference, and ushers in the revolutionary era of the 1960s.
Michael C Hall and Jodi Balfour will join the series as John F Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, respectively.

Stepping into screen legend Greta Garbo’s former New York City home, is like taking a step back in time. The perfectly preserved floor-through apartment overlooking the East River is in one of the neighborhood’s most historic buildings, the Camponile, and is covered in knotty pine that realtor Brian Lewis notes, reminded her of her native Sweden.

History-focused 28th edition of documentary and factual content event runs June 19-22 in La Rochelle.
Upcoming documentaries exploring the life of Mikhail Gorbachev, the space race and Jackie Kennedy’s anti-segregationist work will be among the projects being presented at this year’s Sunny Side of the Doc (Ssd) this year.
The 28th edition of the documentary and factual content market and conference, running June 19-22 on the historic docks of the picturesque French port town of La Rochelle, is putting the onus on history this year.
The focus is in keeping with Ssd’s four-year cycle alternating the annual theme between history, science, human interest and wildlife. But the fact the history theme falls this year is also timely, comments founding director Yves Jeanneau.
“The phrase ‘reinventing history’ sums up what’s going on at the moment. We’re witnessing a renewal and rejuvenation in the way history is being told, both in terms...

How important is resemblance, really?
As we mentioned in our newsletter yesterday, Christian Bale is reportedly in talks to star as former vice president Dick Cheney in an Adam McKay helmed biopic, alongside Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney and Steve Carrell as Donald Rumsfeld. The news, broken by Variety, has lead to a host of reactions across the internet, including a number of Dark Knight and American Psycho related jokes because, you know, duh. Front and center in many of these reactions is speculation (though in some cases, anticipatory salivation might be more accurate) over how Bale will transform for the role.
After all, Christian Bale is known for physical metamorphoses that rank just below those of caterpillars on an impressiveness scale; he famously lost 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist (bringing the 6' actor to a skeletal 120-ish pounds), and afterwards went directly to Batman Begins, eating and weight-lifting his way to 220 pounds, which...

In 2014, it looked like Kathryn Bigelow was going to tackle an adaptation of The True American. The nonfiction work follows Raisuddin Bhuiyan, who was injured in a hate crime shortly after 9/11, and later sought to get perpetrator Mark Stroman, a man who called himself “Arab Slayer,” off death row. It’s a story that appeared to deal in subject matter with which Bigelow had been working, with Tom Hardy attached to star. Bigelow, however, has since moved on to other pursuits, and now Deadline reports that Pablo Larraín will direct the movie. Larraín won acclaim last year for his unsettling take on a Jackie Kennedy biopic, Jackie. Per Deadline, Hardy is still set to appear in The True American. Curiously enough, the actor is also working on another project that was once connected to Bigelow, Triple Frontier.

Natalie Portman and director Anna Rose Holmer (The Fits) appear to have hit it off. Last week, we saw them collaborate on the music video for the James Blake song “My Willing Heart,” a black and white short as beautiful as it is touching, showing a heavily pregnant Portman connecting with her unborn child in some downright amazing underwater photography. Now, after giving birth on February 22nd, she’s already back in the saddle to play the lead in Holmer’s next production, Bronco Belle, summarized as “Rocky on a bull.”
The film follows Raylene Jackson, a female bull rider described as a “vulnerable and determined American woman with a chip on her shoulder,” who’s struggling to be taken seriously in an extremely male-dominated sport. Indiewire goes on to report that Khurram Longi is on script duties and that “interest is already there” – and so it should be! After all,...

Ridley Scott is set to direct a new film project that has nothing to do with aliens. The film is called All the Money in the World, and it centers around true life events surrounding the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. I don't know if you're familiar with this story or not, but it's pretty intense. Here's a breakdown:
At 3 a.m. on 10 July 1973, Getty, then age 16, was kidnapped in the Piazza Farnese in Rome. A ransom note was received, demanding $17 million in exchange for his safe return. When that ransom message arrived, some family members suspected the kidnapping was merely a ploy by the rebellious youngster as he had frequently joked about staging his own kidnapping to extract money from his frugal grandfather. He was blindfolded and imprisoned in a mountain hideout. A second demand was received, but had been delayed by an Italian postal strike. John Paul Getty,...

Though you’d be forgiven for thinking that Ridley Scott has next-to-no room left on his busy, busy schedule what with Alien: Covenant and its embryonic sequel, the prolific filmmaker is reportedly on the verge of closing a deal to helm All the Money in the World.
Per Deadline, the David Scarpa-scripted drama has been plucked from Hollywood’s Black List by Sony. It chronicles the infamous 1973 Mafia kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, and Gail Harris’ desperate attempts to locate her wayward son. To make matters worse, the boy’s greedy grandfather John Paul Getty Sr., said to be the world’s richest man at the time, outright refused to pay the $17 million ransom.
Angelina Jolie was once in contention to take point as Harris, but ultimately decided to pass due to scheduling concerns. According to Deadline, Ridley Scott and Co. have now turned their sights toward Natalie Portman for the role.
