Roy Calne(1930-2024)
He was a pioneer in organ transplant surgery, along with American Thomas Starzl, MD. He helped turn a risky experimental operation into a widely-accepted procedure. He performed the first successful liver transplant in Europe while he was a surgery professor at the University of Cambridge. In 1986 he was knighted for his contributions to medicine.
He matriculated at Guy's Hospital Medical School in London at age 16. He qualified as a doctor in 1952, and served as an army doctor in southeast Asia for a few years before returning to England.
