In Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a fair amount is made of Klaus Fuchs, the German theoretical physicist who passed secrets from Los Alamos to the Soviet Union. But nowhere in this substantive blockbuster do we hear about Theodore Hall. A wunderkind physicist from Far Rockaway, New York City, recruited to the Manhattan Project as an 18-year-old Harvard senior, Hall, too, shared atomic secrets with the Soviets, for what he later claimed were purely moral reasons: He thought the possibility of the U.S. — or any country — having a monopoly on...

Rhett Miller finds himself pleasantly surprised by his contentment in “Follow You Home,” the first offering from the Old 97’s frontman’s first solo album in four years. Titled The Misfit, the project will be released via Ato Records on Sept. 16.
With shades of Fleetwood Mac and dream-pop, the buoyant “Follow You Home” is anchored by its upbeat rhythm and sunny splashes of electric guitar. “Tried living in the moment, but I was living in a dream,” Miller sings, lamenting the random, unpredictable nature of existence. In the end, he...

In January 2020, songwriter Kevin Morby witnessed his father collapse from a medical event while visiting his childhood home in Kansas. In a state of shock, the singer spent the evening looking at old family photos and fixated on an image of his father as a young man, looking, as Morby states, “full of confidence.” The experience forced Morby to confront both the idea of mortality and the passage of time — and, after an extended sojourn in Tennessee, these reflections came together in the form of his upcoming album, This Is a Photograph,...

Andrew Combs has released the new video for “Dry Eyes,” one of the highlights from the singer’s fourth album, Ideal Man. The clip, shot in black and white and featuring an impressionistic, dissociative narrative, was directed by the Texas-based filmmaker Austin Leih.
“‘Dry Eyes’ is the only classic ‘you did me wrong’ relationship song on this new record,” said Combs. “I wrote it with my pal Burton Collins, who is a great lyricist here in Nashville. It’s about a former bride who did not know how to show any emotions,...

This past February, Andrew Combs was sitting on a couch in a recording studio in Brooklyn, beer in hand, listening intently to the playback of his new song “Firestarter” in the control room.
“I just feel like there’s something missing in the turnaround, maybe even the chorus,” he said. “I’m not in love with the Leslie Bgv’s.”
Over the past year, Combs has been making trips to New York to work on his latest album, Ideal Man, with the producer Sam Cohen. It’s the first time...

Old 97’s leader Rhett Miller is at his most messed up best on the new hard luck song “Total Disaster,” the first track to be released from his upcoming solo LP, The Messenger.
Miller, who celebrated his 48th birthday earlier this month, finds himself in a familiar predicament on “Total Disaster,” mulling over of his Irish whiskey-induced hardships and wondering when he’ll ever grow up. Aided, perhaps, by the intoxicating thump on the lean, lunging backbeat, he manages to look on the bright side of things, telling himself, “There...
