Bruce Mayer was born in Newberry, South Carolina and attended schools
in the Newberry County Public School system. Having an early interest
in art, an interest fostered by his parents Euston and Lola Mayer of
Newberry, he attended art school at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota
Florida, majoring in Advertising and Design. Upon graduating in 1977
Mayer began his career working with South Carolina Educational
Television in the capacity of Staff Artist. Because of his interest in
many other aspects of television, his job soon evolved from that of
Staff Artist, to Producer-Director. Because of his love of South
Carolina history, particularly Sumter, Camden and Charleston history,
he began producing historical documentaries relating to these areas.
Mayer is producer and co-host of ETV's Treasure Hunter show and Producer / Director of The Writers' Circle program, hosted by Patti Just. Also Mayer is producer of ETV's new music show, Bluegrass Express, a one-hour weekly show taped before a live audience at the Sumter Opera House. Bluegrass Express features great bluegrass music from around the region.
In his 30th year at ETV, Mayer now serves as Producer-Director for ETV's new South Carolina Channel. His latest TV documentaries include The Great Cooper River Bridge, a history of the old John P. Grace Bridge in Charleston, which was built in 1928-29. The old Grace Bridge is slated to be dismantled upon completion of the new Ravenel Bridge in 2005 and this one-hour production traces the history of the Grace Bridge from the beginning, to its completion.
Mayer is married to Katharine Rothrock Mayer, and has three girls, Rachel, Kelly, and Allison & has two brothers: Ralph & Dean. His father is Euston H. Mayer and his mother, Lola Y. Mayer, both of whom still reside in Newberry. Bruce and his family presently live in Sumter, South Carolina.
