The Decemberists are back with “All I Want Is You,” an “unapologetic love song” and the latest single from their upcoming album, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again.
A stripped-back song featuring a finger-plucked acoustic guitar and rich vocal harmonies, “All I Want Is You” is a hymnal-like ode to earnest love, climaxing as a smooth bed of brass enters beneath Colin Meloy’s gentle delivery of the titular refrain.

Speaking about the song, Meloy said, “‘All I Want Is You’ is a love song. An unapologetic, wear-it-on-its-sleeve love song. I don’t write a ton of those, at least not in this vein.”
Continuing, Meloy offered insight into the origins of the new single. “The song grew out of the finger picking pattern — ‘Don’t want pretty poses…’ — and I just followed that lead,” he said. “In the end, it just kind of wrote itself.

The Decemberists have announced a new double album, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again, due out June 14th on the band’s label Yabb Records via Thirsty Tigers. To accompany the announcement, the band has also shared the 19-minute album closer “Joan in the Garden.”
As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again, the folk-rock act’s ninth album, marks the band’s return after a six-year hiatus. Teased by the recent single “Burial Ground” and split into four thematic sides, the double-lp also notably boasts guest appearances from The Shins’ James Mercer and Rem’s Mike Mill.

Contrasting the relative brevity and accessibility of “Burial Ground,” which serves as the album’s opener, “Joan in the Garden” arrives as an extended, multi-part epic. The song’s subject matter is fittingly grand, as the origins of the song derive from the story of Joan of Arc.

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe movie hasn’t had the easiest path, but the long-in-development project has taken a big step forward as Deadline reports that Bumblebee director Travis Knight is in final negotiations to helm the movie.
Although Deadline cautions that the deal is still coming together, the report states that Knight was the only director in the mix to give an in-person presentation, which made him the top choice for the gig. Chris Butler will rewrite the script from the previous draft penned by David Callaham, Aaron and Adam Nee. The project was previously set up at Netflix, but the streaming service scrapped the project last summer. It was later reported that the movie could find a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, and according to Deadline, they’re now in final negotiations for the rights.

Stop-motion animation is a notoriously difficult medium – the tiny movements, the many iterations of a single puppet character, the time-consuming nature of creating smooth action and evoking emotion from a piece of clay. To get under the hood of just how a stop-motion feature film comes together, Empire visited one of the most exciting studios in the business, Laika – behind the likes of Coraline, Kubo And The Two Strings, and Missing Link – for our brand new issue, which Empire can confirm is finally due out in 2025.
Directed by Knight, it’s a fantasy epic based on a book by The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy, and is set in and around Laika’s home city, Portland. It follows a young woman, Prue McKeel, who comes across a mystical, enchanted forest – and it’s set to feature a huge battle sequence, the likes of which Laika has never attempted before. “It’s...

Laika, the Oregon-based stop-motion animation studio behind modern classics “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” is getting serious about entering the live-action space. The studio just named longtime Netflix executive Matt Levin as President, Live-Action Film & Series, a new role at the company. The first live-action project is a film based on John Brownlow’s thriller novel “Seventeen.”
Levin served as Director, Original Independent Film at Netflix from 2014 to 2022. He co-founded the Original Independent Film department growing it into a full-scale mini-major with 20+ executives. Levin oversaw projects like Macon Blair’s “I Don’t Feel At Home in the World Anymore,” underrated Elizabeth Winstead-led action movie “Kate,” and Charlie Kaufman’s puzzling “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” Levin also worked on Tom Hardy’s upcoming “Havoc” from director Gareth Evans (due out sometime later this year).

The announcement was made Wednesday by Travis Knight, President & CEO of the award-winning animation studio, who will direct the film. “Wildwood” is currently in production at Laika’s facility outside Portland, Oregon.
The synopsis for the film reads: “Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one.

Stop-motion animation studio Laika has announced what will be their sixth animated feature film: “Wildwood.” And Travis Knight, the company’s president and CEO, is making his return to animated films and will direct the project for the studio.
“Wildwood” is based on a book by the lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists, Colin Meloy, which also features illustrations by artist Carson Ellis. Production is underway now at the Laika facility outside Portland, Oregon.
The film also has something of a hometown tie for Laika, as it’s the story of an enchanted world called Wildwood that exists just outside Portland’s city limits. When one girl finds her way there after her baby brother has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, she finds herself at the center of a fairy tale encountering strange talking animals, roguish bandits and powerful figures with dark intentions.

Social Distancing With Colin Meloy of the Decemberists: ‘Astral Weeks,’ Sourdough Starters and Dread
As the world fights a pandemic, we reached out to some of our favorite artists with a few quarantine questions about these unprecedented times. Here’s what Colin Meloy of the Decemberists has to say.
What are you doing with your unexpected time at home?
Some aspects of my life have not changed at all. In fact, it’s sort of eerie how unchanged some parts of my life are in the midst of a global pandemic. Particularly now, when I don’t have a record coming out and I’m not on tour.

“Hey, cowboy!”
Even in a city where everyone’s seen it all, the sight of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is still enough to turn a few heads, including one of a guy plopped down outside a bodega. On a recent summer morning, Elliott has returned to his former stomping, singing, and drinking grounds of New York’s Greenwich Village. As he has most of his life, he resembles a slightly bow-legged ranch hand on a day off — black T-shirt, slightly scuffed black boots, jeans with suspenders that resemble a woven belt.

The Decemberists soundtrack a defiant dance in the powerful new video for “Once in My Life.”
Autumn de Wilde directed the video, which stars her brother Jacob de Wilde. In the opening sequence, Jacob explains that he’s 7’2″, wears size 22 shoes and is learning-disabled. This narration accompanies footage of Jacob eating alone at a restaurant, trying to ignore the stares and laughs from the other patrons. After a kind word from a server, Jacob launches himself out of the restaurant and into the night, where he begins dancing through the streets of Los Angeles.

As I mentioned way back on this post from 2008, as much as I’ve tried to branch out, my tastes are pretty narrow when it comes to reading material.
I’d love to say that I’m broadly well-read when it comes to the more celebrated books of the day, but it’s just not true. If you’re looking to engage in a discussion about today’s most incisive fiction, you’re much better off speaking with my wife (who works in publishing) than one such as I. Truthfully, I’ve pretty much lost my taste for fiction almost entirely. Unless I have some vested interest (like, say, I know the author or it’s about something near and dear to me), I usually cannot muster up the interest to crack the binding.
As a result, whenever I’m perusing through the aisles of a bookstore (when I can still find one,...

If you've ever spent time scrolling through a YouTube comments section, you know that even a seemingly innocuous viral video can inspire angry and idiotic rants. But now, thanks to the Decemberists, Internet stupidity sounds a lot sweeter. The band dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday to promote their new studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World – but they also teased a fictional (but hilarious) LP of songs set to YouTube comments.
"They write interesting, very intelligent songs about uncommon subjects," Kimmel said of the band to open the clip.

Over a 13-year run, the Decemberists’ front man Colin Meloy has written all but one of the songs that appear on the Oregon band’s seven albums. Meloy’s bandmates, he says, have been nothing if not completely supportive of his musical instinct. “It’s given me a lot of room to feel comfortable bringing stuff to them. Maybe though I’d write better songs if they shot me down more often,” he says with a laugh. To mark the release of their latest studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, who better than Meloy to pick the Decemberists' best tracks? Read on to see his selections.Castaways and Cutouts (2002): “Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect” It was really groundbreaking for me at the time. I felt like it was a concise, Fleetwood Mac–y pop song. To say a folksy, literary and largely unplugged band like the Decemberists has mellowed with age seems facetious, but the lyric video for the new track "Lake Song" indicates that their new work is gentler -- not to mention more accessible and radio-friendly -- than much of their acclaimed back catalog. Mellow and nostalgic, "Lake Song" kicks off with a "Led Zeppelin III"-esque acoustic riff and remains thoroughly polished throughout. It lacks the often-caustic edge and quirkiness of much of the Portland band's older material, and sometimes creeps into bland adult contemporary territory, what with the stand-up bass and tinkling piano touches. It's also less wordy than many of frontman Colin Meloy's best-known tunes, although you may need to grab a dictionary to look up "prevaricate" or "sibylline." More than just a lyric video, the handsomely shot, black-and-white "Lake Song" captures the Decemberists in the studio, where they...

A few weeks ago, we were whisked away to the magical land of Portland, Oregon, for the sole purpose of visiting Laika, the animation studio whose dazzling new stop motion confection "The Boxtrolls," opens later this month. As you can imagine, it was downright magical and while we were there, for a few short hours, we tried to soak up all we could from the place - the sets, the people, the vibe - so we relay that special feeling to you. It was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime treat, to the point that we had to actively wonder if we had come down with some incurable disease and they were whisking us there as a dying wish.

Conor Oberst was up for the titular role of Inside Llewyn Davis – "and thank God for everyone that I didn't get it," he joked during a chat with the film's actual star, Oscar Isaac. In a chat for Interview, Isaac and the Bright Eyes frontman spoke about Joel and Ethan Coen's latest film, an homage to the early days of the Greenwich Village folk revival, in which Isaac plays a floundering musician. It was a role the brothers initially struggled to fill, wanting to find an actor who could also play music.
