Halfway through the frustrating, fascinating “73 Yards”, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart says: “It’s what we do, all of us. We see something inexplicable and invent the rules to make it work.”
Ever since the Doctor inadvertently allowed superstition to seep through at the end of the universe in “Wild Blue Yonder”, the series has been engaging explicitly with the supernatural. From goblins that feast on coincidence and bad luck, to chaos gods weaponising the music within our souls, this focus on the fantastical has opened up many exciting narrative and visual possibilities for Doctor Who. And as Kate points out, in a neat bit of world-building, it hasn’t gone unnoticed – as well as the usual psychic training and telepathic dampeners, Unit personnel also wear necklaces of silver and salt.
It’s compelling stuff. But as chilling, tense and unpredictable as this episode is – and...

In episode four of Doctor Who series 14, the 15th Doctor and Ruby land on the coastal cliffs of modern-day Wales. The views are amazing and they can’t see another person for miles. However, a fluke results in the Doctor disappearing and Ruby must figure out on her own how to get him back.
Episodes like “73 Yards” where the Doctor’s screen time is considerably shortened, are referred to as Doctor-lite episodes. They’re either made because of a scheduling conflict (Ncuti Gatwa was finishing his final season of Sex Education while “73 Yards” was being filmed) or due to a budgetary need to film two episodes simultaneously, as happened with series three’s Blink.
Den of Geek interviewed Millie Gibson and Ncuti Gatwa on why “73 Yards” is Ruby’s most memorable episode this series.
“The first script I read from Russell T. Davies was “73 Yards”, and as soon as I read it,...

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.
Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”
Produced by Black Water Pictures and Lipsync Productions, the feature shoots in London this April. Winstone and his long-term manager, Michael Wiggs, are also on board as co-producers. The film will mark Waddington’s feature directorial debut.

With the premiere of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series just weeks away, the marketing campaign is beginning to ramp up. First, we got the welcome news that former showrunner and Doctor Who’s most prolific writer Steven Moffat has penned an episode for the new series, which is described as “Hitchcockian” in tone. As an actress, writer and director, Alice Lowe has never much cared if you like the characters she’s penned for herself. From the tourist who develops a taste for murder on her road trip with her boyfriend in Ben Wheatley’s “Sightseers” to a mother-to-be whose baby inspires far more violence than just kicking around in her belly in her own directorial debut, “Prevenge,” Lowe has sacrificed audience approval for the license to explore darker corners of the female experience. However, that might make Agnes the most deliciously miserable of her creations, as someone in desperate need of love, commencing a grimly amusing search for the perfect partner across centuries in “Timestalker.”
If comedy is tragedy plus time, there is plenty of it in Lowe’s latest film. Starting in Scotland in the late 1600s, Agnes can’t escape her attraction to the wrong guy (Aneurin Barnard) and is...

Head's up, Whovians! "Doctor Who" fans have been enjoying an embarrassment of riches lately, including (but not limited to) the casting of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the grand return of acclaimed writer/director Russell T. Davies into the "Doctor Who" fold, and even the surprise appearance of beloved franchise actor David Tennant in that 60th anniversary special. But arguably the biggest development was saved for last, when we found out that BBC and Disney would be teaming up to bring the classic series to an even bigger global platform through Disney+ streaming.
Now, in a new announcement, Disney has revealed the official premiere date for the upcoming and widely-anticipated season. Mark your calendars and clear your schedules for Friday, May 10 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Edt. The festivities will actually begin with a re-airing of the Christmas special "The Church on Ruby Road" that originally debuted in December of 2023, followed by two brand-new episodes.

Love never dies, but a lot of people do in Alice Lowe’s gloriously bloody valentine to the romantic comedy. Spanning so much time that it practically goes back to the beginning of it, Timestalker is an ambitious project that not only works, it coheres in a way that cements Lowe as a genuine and quite visionary comedic talent. It recalls classic Monty Python — it’s often very, very stupid and the same time very, very clever — but most of all it’s an idea of what might have been if that all-male team had ever had a woman or two in its core lineup.
Lowe set out her stall in 2016 with Prevenge, a horror comedy in which a bereaved pregnant woman is driven to avenge her late husband, incited to murder by her unborn baby. Timestalker doesn’t fall far from that tree, being another satirical comment on how...

Even in 1688, there were fuckboys. Such is the first and best lesson of Alice Lowe’s “Timestalker,” even if it’s one our leading lady Agnes has to learn over and over and over and over. That’s the gimmick of Lowe’s second feature film — a winning follow-up to her bloody good 2016 feature directorial debut “Prevenge” — which is billed as a “reincarnation rom com.” Mostly, the feature serves as a stellar reminder of the elasticity of genre and Lowe’s ability to stretch any apparent limits however she sees fit.
Consider Lowe’s sophomore film a canny, slightly sweeter companion to Bertrand Bonello’s similarly plotted “The Beast”: Both films follow a pair of star-crossed lovers who continue to meet in different times, places, and stations, only to fuck it up each time. In Lowe’s version, however, her Agnes is the only one aware of what’s actually unspooling here.

Seven years in the making, spanning centuries in the telling, Alice Lowe’s latest feature, Timestalker, is a strange beast. A dark comedy, a romance through the ages, a violent sci-fi, and an existential musing on the self, it’s an ambitious romp dressed in spandex and crinoline.
“When you make an independent film, you know there’s a chance you may never make one again,” says Lowe. “Any time one happens, it’s like a miracle. And I really just thought, God, if this was the last film that I ever get to make, what would I want to put in it? It’s like my gravestone in a film.”
What she’s put in it are fabulous costumes, wigs, animals, an ensemble cast playing multiple roles, music, Easter eggs,...

“No job. No boss. Just fun.” That was the offer the Fifteenth Doctor made to Ruby Sunday in the Doctor Who series 14 trailer. ‘And’, he should probably have added, ‘quite a lot of mortal peril,’ – but when has the Doctor ever been upfront with companions about the not-insignificant dangers of travelling in time and space? He probably doesn’t even fill in a risk assessment.

First of all – is the BBC allowed to air a drama without a detective or a horse-drawn carriage in it? Can somebody check?
Crime and period’s drama dominance isn’t the only modern TV trend bucked by The Way. Actor Michael Sheen’s directorial debut is a wild throwback to the society-falls-apart TV of the past: Threads. The Year of the Sex Olympics. The Guardians. Cold Lazarus… all those wiggy, provocative Nigel Kneale and Dennis Potter stories that aimed for more than just audience share.
Written by Sherwood and Quiz’s James Graham, and co-created with documentary maker Adam Curtis, The Way also aims high – too high for what it’s able to achieve in three episodes, making it much more a curio than a must-see.
The drama imagines a Welsh civil uprising that turns the country into a closed-border police state and its people into persecution-fleeing refugees. It follows the Driscolls,...

Duncan Jones is back with a brand new project titled Rogue Trooper, an animated adaptation of the same-titled comic book from 2000 Ad.
Variety reports, “The animated film, which is being created with Epic’s 3D tool Unreal Engine 5, was adapted by Jones from the comic book published by 2000 Ad.
“Rogue Trooper, produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films, has wrapped principal photography at Rebellion Film Studios in the U.K. The film is set to be finished next year.”
“Rogue Trooper tells the story of 19, a “Genetic Infantryman,” who finds himself the sole-survivor of an invasion force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades out, the super soldier is accompanied by three killed-in-action squad mates, whose personalities have been stored in his gun, helmet and rucksack.”
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Daryl McCormack and Reece Shearsmith are attached to star, with Variety noting that Barnard will play the title character.

Hayley Atwell has reportedly joined the cast of director Duncan Jones’ animated Rogue Trooper movie, based on the 2000 Ad comic strip of the same name. It’s even wrapped filming!
Word that Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones was attached to a film adaptation of the 2000 Ad comic strip Rogue Trooper first broke over five years ago, before the world descended into a maelstrom of global disease, military invasions and AI-driven societal collapse – exactly the sort of dystopian stuff you might expect to find in those British sci-fi comics.
After years of eerie silence, though, it sounds as though the adaptation is much further along than we’d previously thought, with Variety reporting that Rogue Trooper has been cast and is already well into production. It’ll star Aneurin Barnard as the title’s genetically-enhanced super soldier. Supporting him will be Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden (who also appeared in...

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. Iwan Rheon, perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ramsay Bolton in the hit series Game of Thrones, is starring in a new BBC drama called Men Up, and he had to film a particularly “awkward” scene for it involving his member.

It sounded great, didn’t it? Three hour-long Doctor Who anniversary specials in November, a Christmas (not just “festive”) episode, and a new season starting much earlier than many had assumed it would. That was the announcement made on Tuesday August 22 by this post on the Culture section of the BBC’s website, as reported (and screen-grabbed) by multiple online outlets.
The original BBC statement read as follows:
“Three hour-long special episodes of Doctor Who will be available from November 2023, with a Christmas special dropping in December and a new season in Spring 2024.”
Go to the same page today, Thursday August 24, and the same statement currently reads:

After the Spring 2024 release date was seized on and widely reported online, someone’s been in with the digital scissors and snipped it out...

Luke Evans and Callum Scott Howells are among the stars of upcoming BBC drama The Way from Michael Sheen, James Graham and Adam Curtis.
Sheen, who is also directing, will star in The Way with Steffan Rhodri and Mali Harries. The drama, announced in February, comes from Welsh indie Red Seam.
The Way is billed “an emotional and darkly humorous story about what it means to be faced with impossible choices” and follows the Driscoll family, who are forced to escape their small home town, which becomes ground zero of a spiraling civil uprising.
Rhodri (Steeltown Murders, Gavin and Stacey), Harries (Keeping Faith, Hinterland), Sophie Melville (The Pact, Iphigenia In Splott), Scott Howells (It’s A Sin, Cabaret) and Sheen (Staged, Good Omens) lead the cast as the Driscoll family with Maja Laskowska (Trigonometry, Baptise) as a young woman caught up in the family’s escape.

Jonathan Groff is the latest cast member announced to be joining Doctor Who series 14 in an as-yet undisclosed mysterious “key role”, the BBC has announced.
Groff is best known to children the world over as the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen films, and to Broadway audiences as King George III from the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit musical Hamilton.
That makes him the third big American Broadway star making his debut in the new Doctor Who episodes, following Neil Patrick Harris’ villainous role in the forthcoming 60th anniversary specials, and the recent announcement that Chicago the stage musical and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon had joined the cast of series fourteen.
Could that much-discussed all-singing, all-dancing episode finally be on the way? The official press release accompanying the casting announcement doesn’t exactly quash the rumours with its choice of headline: “Doctor Who Hits Another...

Doctor Who script editor Scott Handcock has teased the return of a past guest star in the forthcoming Christmas special.
This year’s festive period will see Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa take over as the 15th Time Lord in the long-running saga.
He’ll be joined by Coronation Street actor Millie Gibson, who was announced as the new companion during Children in Need in November.
While there’ll be plenty of new faces, Handcock has said that a character from 2005 will make a return.
“As we get into the second week of our Christmas Special shoot, a guest star from 2005 returns; one of our writers delivers their fourth draft of a script for Block Three; a hero prop gets its first unveiling in a Block Three tone meeting, and Block Four director Ben Chessell starts work with the crew in Cardiff,” the script editor wrote in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine.

1. Aneurin Barnard Aneurin Barnard is awesome in Dunkirk and The Goldfinch, but people still don’t talk about him enough. He’s got some serious acting skills. 2. Gugu Mbatha-Raw Gugu Mbatha-Raw is amazing in movies like Belle and Beyond the Lights, but she doesn’t get the attention she deserves. She can play so many different characters! 3. Toby Kebbell Toby Kebbell is great in A Monster Calls and RocknRolla, but he’s still underrated. He can show so much emotion without even saying a word. 4. Sarah Gadon Sarah Gadon is totally rad in Alias Grace and Enemy, but peeps don’t...
