Despite the decrease in budget that took its toll in various levels of the festival, the Asian representation was quite strong this year too, with the awards night cementing the fact in the most obvious fashion, as the majority of accolades went to movies from the region. “Rei” winning the big award was definitely a big surprise (and also the most memorable moment of the whole festival) but I think the film that truly stole the show was “Kiss Wagon” an almost three hour animation by Midhun Murali who did almost everything in the film by himself, and whose artfulness and contextual intricacy is truly on another level. The Iranian participation was of quality as usual, while Tamil cinema stole the show once more, both in the Masala style of the Indian productions and the more ‘art-house' one of the Malaysian “Fire on Water”, which actually criticizes the aforementioned industry.

Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” won the audience award at the 53rd edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam in a strong year for the event, which recorded 253,500 visits across its programs.
Holland’s Venice Jury Prize-winner derives its name from the swampy forests found at the border between Poland and Belarus, a perilous place where hundreds of migrants — mostly from the Middle East and Africa — try to make their way into the European Union. “Green Border” chronicles the intertwined lives of people caught in the geopolitical webs of the crossing and joins several of Holland’s films to have played at IFFR, including “Europa Europa” and “Burning Bush.”
This year’s edition of the festival, which took place between Jan. 25 – Feb. 4, featured 424 films, 183 of which were world premieres, plus accompanying programs including Art Directions and IFFR Talks. As part of the Talks program, the festival welcomed names such as Sandra Hüller,...

In “Amphetamine”, Scud's most visually polished drama about a toxic and intoxicated love between a young Australian financial executive Daniel (Thomas Price) and a straight Hong Kong jack of all trades Kafka (Byron Pang), hope is the only thing permanently absent.
Amphetamine is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The melancholic Kafka is caught between working three jobs to help provide for his sick mother and a not so functional relationship with his girlfriend, who is struggling to understand his broken psyche. When she decides to break off in broad daylight in a posh bar, the boy with the sword has already caught Daniel's eye. Just to make sure we'll understand this instant crush, Scud shows us Kafka's beauty from all sides. Right at the beginning of the film, we observe him giving swimming lessons and being pestered by an elderly man who tells him “he has a body like Michelangelo's”. Soon after,...

“Love Actually” sucks indeed, both as that horrendous film directed by Richard Curtis from 2003, and as a real life experience that barely any of us was spared of. In the case of Scud's drama from 2011, there is also a third, literal interpretation of the title that is very nicely explained in a wedding video screened right at the beginning of the film. The wedding celebration that goes terribly wrong is a place where all film's protagonists who will later on indulge in different types of relationships, are gathered. We recognize their faces one by one as the story unfolds.

Marking his tenth film, “Naked Nations – Tribe Hong Kong” is also Scud's swan song in filmmaking, with the fact actually being a central element of the narrative of this 161-minute mix of drama, making-of, documentary and self-hommage. At the same time, it can also be perceived as an act of defiance, while one of the central elements of the majority of Scud's films, male nudity is also quite prevalent here, although this time, his own too.
Naked Nations – Tribe Hong Kong is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
Scud invites his collaborators from previous films including Adonis He and Osman Hung, along with Stanley Kwan (one of the few men that doesn't get naked in the movie) and embarks in a multileveled “trip” that seems to unfold in a number of thematic axes. The first one is the whole Covid situation, with Scud recording how the government handled the...

The Blade film and television franchise are one of the most popular and enduring action series. The lead character in the franchise is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, which features Wesley Snipes as Blade.
Marvel Comics writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan created the character in 1973 as a supporting player in The Tomb of Dracula comic book series.
Blade Trilogy is the story of a half-human, half-vampire superhero who fights vampires to protect humanity.
The first film in the series, Blade (1998), was a critical and commercial success and launched a franchise that would span three sequels and multiple spin-offs.

There was no such thing as the big-budgeted local production film when it came to Hong Kong films at this year’s Hkiff and if attendees remember last year entrees they'd noticed the common link in the low budget works from filmmaker Heiward Mak. Last year she filled up the Hkiff with four films: she was the editor on Scud’s Amphetamine, she co-wrote Peng Ho Cheung’s Love in the Puff and she made both a feature (Ex) and short film (We Might as Well be Strangers). This year she was back with what was originally designed to be a simple television episode which then became the big screen project that was presented in this year's line-up. Beside(s,) Happiness might be simple in tone, but its one of the most heart-warming works that will have appeared in the Hk film scene in 11'. I sat down with Mak...

Peng Ho-Cheung’s cigarette-oriented romantic comedy Love In A Puff remained faithful to what Ho-Cheung does best: his writing. Much of this might have to do with his chosen collaborator. His co-writer, Heiward Mak offers much insight, modern-day relationships in the Hong Kong. - As this year’s edition came to a close, I've decided to look back and filter through some of the highs and lows of the fest. Among the disappointments, at the top of the list we have Ivy Ho's Crossing Hennessy which stars Tang Wei (from Lust, Caution fame) and Jacky Cheung. Scud's latest effort is a brash, self-indulgent, homosexually charged film - but then no one was expecting it to be anything else. As such, Amphetamine is forced to negotiate a number of tricky hurdles, both on and off screen, which it only occasionally manages to clear successfully. The story details the impassioned affair between openly gay banker, Daniel (Thomas Price) and the closeted, drug-addled lifeguard Kafka (Byron Pang). After spying him looking forlorn in a bar, Daniel offers Kafka a ride in his Ferrari, whisking him off to his luxurious apartment, where he attempts to woo him with his affluent lifestyle. Although we've previously seen Kafka getting paid to give hand jobs in the sauna, he has an ex-girlfriend and insists he is straight. Daniel is not put off however, and invites Kafka to move into his apartment, away from the bad influences of his ice-smoking older brother. But...

It has yet to premiere in Hong Kong, but is set for a March 11th release and it'll also will be able to be seen during the Hong Kong International Festival. - Hong Kong Film Scene: LocalThe 34th edition of the Hong Kong International Festival will be bookended by homegrown films this year -- Crossing Hennessy, the sophomore feature from Ivy Ho (Claustrophobia) will open the fest alongside Like A Dream starring Daniel Wu. The festival which includes several international titles from last year's Cannes, Toronto and Venice film fests, contains some newer, attention-getting titles such as Love in a Puff -- Pang Ho-Cheung’s first time collaboration with Haiward Mak, who first caught Hong Kong film critics’ attention with her debut feature High Noon.
