We have learned the sad news this week that prolific horror author Ray Garton, who wrote nearly 70 books over the course of his career, has passed away after a battle with lung cancer.
Ray Garton was 61 years old.
Stephen King tweets, “I’m hearing that Ray Garton, horror novelist and friend, died yesterday. This is sad news, and a loss to those who enjoyed his amusing, often surreal, posts on Twitter.”
Ray Garton’s novels include Seductions, Darklings, Live Girls, Night Life, and Crucifax in the 1980s, followed in later decades by output including A Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting, Trade Secrets, The New Neighbor, Lot Lizards, Dark Channel, Shackled, The Girl in the Basement, The Loveliest Dead, Ravenous, Bestial, and most recently, Trailer Park Noir.
Garton also wrote young adult novels under the name Joseph Locke, including the novelizations for A Nightmare on Elm Street: The...

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.
Before the era of televised paranormal investigators like Zak Bagans of "Ghost Adventures" or "Kindred Spirits" stars Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, there were Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ed was a professed demonologist, while...

Blackpool, Lee Evans, Jerry Lewis and Oliver Platt converge in Funny Bones. Here's why it's a film worth seeking out.
"Why do all the best things in life belong to the past?"
It seems a strange thing to be obsessed about, it wasn't a franchise, and didn't come with much buzz, but when Peter Chelsom's Funny Bones was released in 1995 I instantly latched on to it. It didn't even receive a general release in the cinemas around my area. It was released during that period when you had to check the local newspaper adverts to discover the cinema times. Disappointingly it didn't appear, not until a few weeks later when it had just one showing, on a Thursday night. I'd been talking about the film for ages to my brother, who was now at university, and once I found that it was screening I practically begged...

As another autumn approaches, horror hounds look forward to the chill of pumpkin guts on their hands, the crunch of leaves under their shoes, and, for some, pulling their copy of October Dreams: A Celebration of Halloween off the bookshelf for another round of seasonal reading. Published in 2000, Cemetery Dance’s collection of Halloween stories, reflections, and essays now has a sequel on the way.
Featuring an abundance of short pieces by a wide range of authors, October Dreams II: A Celebration of Halloween doesn’t yet have an official release date, but it is expected to come out soon in a hardcover edition from Cemetery Dance. The term "horror library" conjures certain expectations. If you go to a library, you can assume you'll find more than one specific kind of book. Likewise, a "horror library" is going to be home to more than one kind of horror - you'll have your "Quiet Horror" section, your "Splatterpunk" section, your "Haunted House" section, your "Demonic Possession" section, and so on and so forth. I believe that Cutting Block Press was very intentional in naming their anthology series Horror Library, and editors R.J. Cavender and Boyd E. Harris continue in this, the series' fifth edition, to take an all-inclusive approach in collecting its contents. While readers who are only attracted to certain kinds of horror may find such far-reaching collections a hit-and-miss affair, those who are open to varying approaches to the genre will find plenty worth reading here. Some of the terrible things you'll stumble across here:...

Christmas is a time for feel-good movies. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the usual Hallmark Hall of Fame drivel that hits the airwaves every December. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the mainstream Christmas classics as much as the next guy. But at night, when my family is all snug in their beds, that’s when I drag out my sick and twisted Christmas collection…
Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, Silent Night Deadly Night, Don’t Open Till Christmas, those are the films I like to cuddle up to with a spiked eggnog. What is my favorite? That’s a difficult question. I love them all for different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I would have to pick a recent import from Finland called Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. A modern mashup of The Thing and the Krampus mythology, it is...

The thrill of a good horror movie is feeling immersed in the intensity of a dangerous situation, all the while knowing that it’s all just a work of fiction. But what happens when that rush of cinematic fear is prefaced with “based on a true story?” You no longer have the comfort of calming your nerves with “it’s all just make-believe.” For movie studios, the hype that surrounds a horror film that claims to be based on a true story results in box office gold.
Without a doubt, the highest grossing horror films that claim to be based on a true story are the ones that have involved the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Their most notable cases that went Hollywood are The Amityville Horror, The Haunting In Connecticut, and most recently The Conjuring. Soon the Warrens will have yet another Hollywood blockbuster attached to them when the reported The Conjuring sequel,...

Anthology film The Profane Exhibit has been in the works for some time now, but things are moving along with casting news for the wrap-around along with more detailed descriptions of the various segments and quotes from a few directors. It's a lot of good stuff so prepare to be here awhile.
From the Press Release:
The producers of “The Profane Exhibit” are excited to announce that both Tony Todd (pictured) and Bai Ling have join the long-awaited horror anthology. They will be featured in the cast of "22 Rue des Martyrs," written by Ray Garton, which serves as the film's wrap-around segment.
David Bond and Manda Manuel are the architects of what is likely the most daring independent horror film project to date, both in concept and scope. Assembling an almost surreal collection of over 100 horror icons (directors, writers, actors, musicians, etc.), Bond's vision is to present the audience with...
