When a classmate learns that new girl Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) has recently moved in with the Walter family, she practically squeals with excitement. “You’re like the luckiest girl in this whole school,” she gushes, describing Jackie’s situation as “boy heaven.”
The comment is more than a little tactless, considering Jackie was only taken in by the Walters after losing her entire family in a car accident. But it’s also an accurate diagnosis of the fantasy that Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys is meant to represent, in which prim and pretty Jackie finds herself living among all the most eligible teenage bachelors in town. Alas, dull characters and sluggish pacing put a damper on the daydream before it ever has a chance to properly ignite.

The next installment of NatGeo’s Genius franchise will follow two subjects: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and thus be titled Genius: MLK/X.
“The fourth season will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X,” per the official description. “While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent protest, Malcolm X argued forcefully for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination. With their formidable wives, Coretta Scott King and Betty Shabazz, by their sides, King and Malcolm X became synonymous with the civil rights era and the fight for racial and economic justice.

The Purge: Anarchy is that rare beast - a sequel infinitely better than its predecessor. Whereas last year's original squandered the fascinating premise of a 12-hour annual period when murder is legal by turning it into generic 'home invasion' tripe, this gripping but stylistically flawed follow-up explores the fabric of this twisted society with an array of intriguing characters and scenarios.

Young couple Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) are stranded after their car is damaged, mother Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and daughter Cali (Zoë Soul) are hounded out of their apartment, while lone wolf Leo (Frank Grillo) is...

James DeMonaco’s The Purge (2013) failed to live up to the intriguing premise of its trailer by penning cast and audience inside an exec home for the duration of the action. With Anarchy he has exercised his right to reply to critics and flung the drama into the wider world, with limited success. This Purge Night sees a brooding antihero and a straggling band of survivors stand in the empathetic corner ready to tug our heartstrings. While braying members of society’s upper echelons, a man with a very deadly van and a masked pack of biking wolves proffer opportunities to boo, hiss and ride out roller-coaster whooshes of adrenalin. Scatter shot with thrill kills.

The Purge: Anarchy is the follow-up to last year’s surprise hit The Purge (2013). The initial film made about twenty times its’ budget, in the Us alone, so a sequel was inevitable.
I must confess to not having seen The Purge until just this week, in order to prep for this latest installation, of what now appears to be a mini-franchise. The Purge: Anarchy and the original are marketed as horror films and rightfully so. However, they could just as well be termed science fiction as the future/alternate history element that both films rely on involve a fictional political event. That event being the rise of a political party called the New Founding Fathers whose rise to power is based upon the success of The Purge to the economy and stability of modern America. Unemployment drops dramatically. Crime is nearly eliminated. Except for the one night of the year.

It’s difficult to turn back once someone wielding a weapon screams “Release The Beast”. The Purge: Anarchy expands the world introduced in the first “Purge,” which mostly composed a tedious home invasion film. This time the depravity of a society that is given the opportunity to commit all manner of crime, including murder, for 12 hours is taken to the streets of Los Angeles. Director James DeMonaco finds restraint, making a film composed with all manner of interesting exploitation inspirations and some keen observations about society, yet still has difficulties finding a way to play within the boundaries of the rules he creates.
The film follows a few different groups of people a few hours before the start of the annual Purge. Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) are on the brink of a breakup while on their drive home. After an intimidating encounter with some eager Purge participants,...

Writer/director James DeMonaco seized the attention of film fans last summer with the darkly alluring premise of The Purge, earning an unpredicted $34 million domestically on its opening weekend. Logically, a sequel was born, bearing the challenge inherent to every successful film’s sequel: topping the first one. For DeMonaco, this wouldn’t be too difficult. The Purge followed only one, well-off family, locked up in their home, leaving the rest of the grisly purging world unexplored. The Purge: Anarchy takes us there – to downtown Los Angeles over the 12-hour course of an Annual Purge night. The film opens with three sets of characters whose stories intersect quickly. There’s fiscally struggling mother Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and daughter Cali (Zoë Soul); separating couple Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez); and lastly, soul-cleansing, vengeful Leo (Frank Grillo). These five characters find themselves on the streets for radically different reasons, but they promptly form a desperate alliance. Leo...

By all accounts, The Purge: Anarchy was never a film I was hoping would exist. Even being a horror fan, I can’t say I wanted to see a sequel to the disappointing 2013 surprise financial hit The Purge. I say disappointed mainly because I was hoping for so much more from a film that advertised one night a year of chaos to the point that the streets would literally run red. What we got instead was a siege film that never fully explored the simple but kind-of genius idea of an annual purge night instated by the government to “cleanse our souls.” James DeMonaco has returned to what will surely be a new franchise, and even with the same writer and director as the first film, I think you’ll be surprised to find that The Purge: Anarchy is an entirely different beast.

Chicago – “The Purge: Anarchy” is a cake-and-eat-it film. On one hand there is a monotonous display of firepower, courtesy of a suspension of laws for one night a year, but it also wants to temper this lawlessness with indictments of government, the rich and the law itself.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The writer and director James DeMonaco definitely has a point of view in the film – the sequel to the successful first film, “The Purge” – but it is so scattered and tenuous, and the gun battles so numerous and ferocious, that any editorializing gets lost in the spent shells. The film is boosted by a fine cast, led by Frank Grillo, and they do add a bit more to the running, hiding and shooting aspect of the story. There are reasons for the motivations of Grillo’s character, which are so contrary to the philosophy of The Purge that it is laughable, even though it’s tragic.

But hey, it's cheap to make and they may be able to dupe just enough people into thinking The Purge: Anarchy will be any better than the first... it isn't. It's worse. The only way they might have made a better movie would have been to set the film the day after the last one, sorting through the pain, emotions and overall aftermath of all the killing, but that would require tact and thought rather than speed and simplicity, allowing them to churn out another one just over a year after the first hit the big screens. As a result, the annual Purge is once again upon us, sound the horn and prepare for tedium. In the year 2023 the "New Founding Fathers" of the United States of America once again invite the...

It's safe to say I was not a fan of "The Purge." James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first film, is back to do both jobs again this time, and I think he's made leaps and bounds in terms of making use of his big idea. My biggest problem with the original film was that the scale of the story being told was a financial consideration, not a creative one, and it felt like it wasted the basic idea of a governmental decision to sanction 12 hours per year where anyone can kill anyone for any reason. Now, what you think of that idea will go a long way to your overall reaction to "The Purge: Anarchy," but what is clear is that DeMonaco set out to make pretty much the opposite of the first film, telling a story that allows us to get a glimpse at the Purge as a whole.

Plot: It's once again time for “The Purge”– a yearly event where, for twelve hours, all crime is legal – even murder. This time, a single mother (Carmen Ejogo) and her daughter (Zoe Soul), along with a bickering couple (Kiele Sanchez & Zach Gilford) find themselves at the mercy of the purgers, only to be rescued by a mysterious man (Frank Grillo) who's in the midst of his own, very private, purge. Chicago – Zach Gilford is a familiar face to fans of the TV series “Friday Night Lights,” where he portrayed Matt Saracen. The actor grew up around Chicago in Evanston, Ill., and has risen through the ranks of acting in his new home of Los Angeles. He currently is featured in the sequel film, “The Purge: Anarchy.”
“The Purge: Anarchy” takes up the premise of the first film, which presupposes a near future America in which laws are suspended for one night a year, allowing all aggressions, crimes and firearms to be practiced with abandon. Zach Gilford portrays Shane, who is part of a couple – his real-life wife Kiele Sanchez is Liz, his other half – that are accidentally thrust into the Purge night with no protection, and hooks up with a armed vigilante named Leo (Frank Grillo). The sequel ups the ante of the first film, with more social commentary and fire power.

Fans of 2013's "The Purge" should ready themselves with round two from "The Purge: Anarchy," to the strains of the same composer from the first scary flick. Nathan Whitehead returned to score the sequel, and HitFix today exclusively reveals the first piece to arrive from the soundtrack: the ominously titled "Don't Do This." Check out the song below. “Scoring ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ was thrilling,” Whitehead said of the new music. “Everything is bigger this time; the action, drama and tension all take place on a much larger scale. I worked hard to incorporate this larger scope in the music, and we went much further combining aggressive electronics and textures with a live orchestra. It was such a satisfying challenge, and I hope my score delivers the intense experience that moviegoers are looking forward to having.” The original soundtrack will be be released on July 15 via Back Lot Music, while the...

This is a shockingly long preview (3.5 minutes) featuring all of the key players of the film, including Frank Grillo who plays a man who uses the night of "The Purge" to exact revenge. His plan hits a bit of a hiccup when he encounters a mother and daughter in need of help; as you'll see in this clip, he makes a pretty big, dangerous decision. The man in the truck is "Big Daddy" and he's played by character actor Jack Conley (L.A. Confidential, Fast & Furious). Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, Zoe Soul, Justina Machado and John Beasley also star.

Though the first chapter in The Purge franchise didn’t really make much of its futuristic premise, in which the sinister New Founding Fathers of America have allotted 12 hours out of the year wherein all crime is legal, The Purge: Anarchy looks like a real step up from its predecessor. Following a group of individuals trapped in a city on Purge Night, it’s filled with creepy characters and, if the trailers are any indication, some truly bone-chilling twists.
Personally, I can’t wait to see what returning writer-director James DeMonaco has in store for this outing, and this new set of posters for the film, many accompanied by the creepy tagline “United We Purge,” only has me more excited.

Universal Pictures is celebrating the 4th of July with a new poster and featurette from The Purge: Anarchy
In 2013, the country responded to the provocative concept that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal. Audiences turned The Purge into a surprise summer hit as the film debuted at No. 1 with an astonishing $34.1 million weekend at the domestic box office.
After witnessing the response to the film and listening to the conversations that it provoked, James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge and writer of The Negotiator, Assault on Precinct 13) quickly returned to the explosive universe that he created with an even more arresting idea for a sequel: placing the audience outside on the streets during the annual Purge.
Once again partnering with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes for the second chapter, it was important to revisit the night...

As the release of The Purge: Anarchy approaches, Universal's glimpses at the film are giving us a better idea of the story, beyond the premise of a terrifying 12-hour stretch where all crime is legal. The latest featurette has Frank Grillo and the rest of the lead cast discussing their roles in this film, including how their characters connect with one another on this night of murder and mayhem. The video, which comes courtesy of IGN, builds on some of the elements revealed in the recently released trailer. That includes Frank Grillo's character Leo, a grieving father who's looking to satiate his need for revenge on Purge Night. Is he aiming for the exact people responsible for his son's death? Or is he simply targeting Purgers? Next up, we have mother-daughter duo Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and Cali (Zoe Soul), who don't have much money and are thusly unprepared to...

Last summer’s The Purge became a word-of-mouth success, grossing $89 million on a miniscule $3 million budget and making a sequel all but inevitable. Luckily, returning writer-director James DeMonaco appears to be changing things up in The Purge: Anarchy, shifting the focus from an upper-class family fending off masked intruders to a group of city dwellers attempting to survive an all-out war encouraged by the authorities.
The latest trailer for the thriller delves a little deeper into what audiences can expect from Anarchy – and I have to say, it looks absolutely nuts. A creepy woman auctioning off captives for wealthy Purgers to hunt, flamethrowers, gatling guns, bodies hanging from buildings, military teams breaking into a house to murder its occupants, and Frank Grillo being a total badass. The Purge: Anarchy has it all.

We all knew that we hadn’t seen the last of the dystopian future America presented in last summer’s The Purge after the film grossed $89 million on a minuscule $3 million budget. Now that the sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, is due to drop this June, it appears that Universal is aiming to turn the property into a series with Paranormal Activity-type ubiquity.
Personally, I think that could be a really good thing, considering there’s plenty to explore in the world of The Purge, in which America is controlled by a fundamentalist Christian dictatorship known as the New Founding Fathers of America, who dictate one night a year where all crime is legal. That includes rape, murder and harassing Ethan Hawke. Sadly, Hawke isn’t returning for the follow-up (for reasons obvious to those who saw the first Purge) and neither is Lena Headey, but the first trailer for the sequel,...
