Showtime has headed down under for its latest drama series acquisition.
The ViacomCBS premium cabler has picked up Wakefield, an Australian series starring The Split’s Rudi Dharmalingam and set an October 18 premiere date.
The eight-episode series, which debuted on Australian public broadcaster ABC in April, is a psychological drama that shines a comedic light on what happens when the sanest individual working in a psych ward begins to lose his grip. It is inspired by creator Kristen Dunphy’s personal experiences.
Dharmalingam plays Nik Katira, who after years working as psych nurse at Wakefield, is exceptionally good at his job. With a gift for soothing the afflicted and reaching the unreachable, he’s the most stable person in what tends to be a pretty crazy place. But right now, as his own sanity is slipping, the question is … why? Tackling the complexity of mental illness with humor and heart,...

Balancing humour and pathos: Kristen Dunphy and Chloe Rickard on the controlled chaos of ‘Wakefield’
When Wakefield premiered on the ABC this month, it was the culmination of a nearly decade-long journey for creator and showrunner Kristen Dunphy.
Finding a home for the mental health-focused series was only half the battle for its creative team as they were forced to navigate a Covid-19 shutdown across international and state borders. Dunphy and executive producer Chloe Rickard, COO Jungle Entertainment, talk to If about what it meant to finally complete the project.
Introspection resulting from self-isolation is hardly a new phenomenon.
But how does it factor into the portrayal of a fictional character?
In the case of Wakefield, Covid-19 protocol may have given lead actor Rudi Dharmalingam some of the emotional triggers necessary to step into the role of Nikhil Katira, a psychiatric nurse whose sanity begins to unravel while working at the titular facility.
Before he could resume filming the miniseries following the Covid-19 lockdown, Dharmalingam first had to complete quarantine,...

There are just a handful of independent production companies with three or more half-hour series currently on U.S. television. One of them could surprise you: It’s Australian indie Jungle Entertainment, owned by CEO Jason Burrows, director Trent O’Donnell, writer Phil Lloyd and COO Chloe Rickard.
They are behind CBS All Access’ first original comedy series No Activity, Fox’s family comedy The Moodys and FX’s half-hour comedy-drama Mr. Inbetween. Additionally, a series by O’Donnell and Lloyd became Comedy Central’s 2014 Review. All four shows have run multiple seasons; three are American versions of the Jungle team’s Australian series, and one, Mr. Inbetween, is the actual Australian series airing on FX in the U.S.
The Moodys and Mr. Inbetween were recently renewed for another season. A third season of No Activity also in the works; it has already been written. While not formally greenlighted, the...

Like the rest of the crew and cast, Niki Aken was gutted when the production of the ABC comedy Why Are You Like This was shut down with two weeks filming to go.
Aken is the script producer on the six-part show created and written by Naomi Higgins, Humyara Mahbub and Aunty Donna’s Mark Samual Bonanno, produced by Sarah Freeman for the directors Jessie Oldfield and Adam Murfet’s production company Ckol.
A spin-off of the pilot funded by the Screen Australia/ABC Fresh Blood initiative, the series follows best friends Mia (Olivia Junkeer) and Penny (Higgins) and Penny’s aloof housemate Austin (Wil King).
“Obviously it was the the right call, but gutting for the cast and crew,” Niki says. “It was a normal, human response to an unprecedented situation.

Maddie Dyer and Rachel Griffiths.
After bonding on Ride Like a Girl, Rachel Griffiths and emerging writer-director Madeleine Dyer are jointly developing a TV comedy series based on a prominent Australian actor.
Describing Rachel’s concept as a new age, male version of Eliza Dolittle, Dyer says the plot will follow the actor as he learns to be ‘woke’ in how he relates to women and conducts himself in the current social climate.
They envisage an Extras-style series where actors and celebrities will play versions of themselves and are still in discussions with the actor about his participation.
Dyer spent five months with Griffiths on a Screen Australia-funded director’s attachment and director’s assistant on pre-production and principle shoot of the Michelle Payne biopic starring Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.
That collaboration prompted Griffiths to laud Dyer as a “sister zeitgeist hunter” during her Hector Crawford memorial lecture at Screen Forever.

The cast of ‘Bad Mothers’
As parents, Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang agreed that being a mother can be an impossible job and that no matter how hard they try, women will sometimes feel they are bad mothers.
The Auckland-based founders of Filthy Productions came up with the concept of a comedy-drama about five mums whose kids go to the same school, overlaid with a murder mystery, and pitched it to the Nine Network.
Execs at Nine suggested Strawhan and Lang find an Australian partner, which turned out to be Jungle Entertainment. The result is Bad Mothers, which launches on Nine at 9 pm on February 18 and across the ditch on Tvnz on February 20.
The ensemble show stars Tess Haubrich as Sarah, whose perfect life as a Gp, wife and mother is shattered when she discovers her husband Anton (Daniel MacPherson) is having an affair. Even worse, her best friend is...

Liz Doran.
Screenwriter Liz Doran has written for The Secret Life of Us, McLeod.s Daughters, Miss Fisher.s Murder Mysteries, Dance Academy and Please Like Me.
She speaks to Jackie Keast about Gender Matters and upcoming projects..
How did you get your start as a writer?
Well, I did it the classic long way of making sure I was an expert before I put myself forward (laughs). I left school in the early 90s and actually trained as a film editor, but I always only ever wanted to be a writer. After I finished film school I did the usual thing: I applied for a lot of development [funding] for early drafts and I tried to get Screen Nsw funding for things. I was quite lucky; there was a funding round through the F.T.O., the precursor to Screen Nsw, and they funded development on a series of 50-minute scripts.

The TV, film and Tvc production house formerly known as Jungleboys is making several emphatic affirmative action moves. Symbolically, the company.s title is now the gender neutral Jungle, reflecting the fact that 50% of the full-time staff is female.
The rechristening co-incides with three initiatives: the promotion of Chloe Rickard to partner and head of film and TV production; the launch of a female creative talent program in collaboration with Screen Nsw; and a commitment to employ at least one female in writing, directing or producing on every project. .The name Jungle is more representative of who we are now, and with our film and TV business incorporating in the Us, we should, at the very least, try to pretend to be grown-ups,. said MD Jason Burrows. One of the first hires at the company nine years ago, Rickard joins the co-founders Burrows, Trent O.Donnell and Phil Lloyd as partners.

The Nine Network is channelling tens of millions of dollars freed up from the end of its output deal with Warner Bros. into a record investment in local content.
Spending on local production will continue to rise over the next three years to the point where the network invests $100 million more per year than currently, executives said at the upfronts presentation today.

Australian production company Jungleboys have signed directing brothers Christiaan and Connor Van Vuuren.
The brothers are best known for producing online hits the Bondi Hipsters and The Fully Sick Rapper which led to them creating the one-hour MTV comedy Sick.
They have also created content for brands such as Cadbury, Coke, Sony, Ikea, Cadbury and Amex. The move means the departure of Christiaan from InfinitySquared where he was a writer and creator.
He told Mumbrella: “I still have an awesome relationship with the guys at InfinitySquared but Connor and I want to pursue directing specifically and Jungleboys being more of a traditional production company allows us to do that.”
Chloe Rickard, senior producer at Jungleboys told Mumbrella: “We’ve already shot a bunch of sketches with the van Vuuren brothers for our online series The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting.”

Clemenger Bbdo Sydney has released an ad for Hungry Jack’s based around its new ‘Eat righteous’ positioning.
In the ad for the Whopper, directed by Trent O’Donnell through JungleBoys, a narrator claims that the burger is what people would eat having just been knighted, while staring at the horizon, or while posing in a portrait.
“The two spots signal a new creative direction for the Hungry Jack’s brand, which will focus on the flavour supremacy of its burger range,” said Justin Cox, group account director, Clemenger Bbdo Sydney. “Eat Righteous is a rally cry for consumers to stop putting up with the bland and boring, and indulge in more epic,
flavoursome food.”

Bwm is behind a campaign for the Sydney Writers’ Festival that plays on the diminishing boundaries between peoples’ public and private lives.
Besides TV, the campaign will run in a program guide in The Sydney Morning Herald, print, posters, Avant Card mini-mags, installations in bars around Sydney’s Cbd and the return of an iPhone app, developed by The Nest.
Bwm creative director, Rocky Ranallo commented: “This year Sydney Writers’ Festival wanted to explore the clashing of private and public domains in a fresh and engaging way. The adage ‘Did I just say that aloud?’ was a fruitful territory for us that we thought would stimulate conversation and discussion around this key societal shift.”
Sydney Writers’ Festival artistic director, Chip Rolley added: “It’s certain to capture the imagination of Sydneysiders flocking to the festival to explore the line between public and private in the books we read and the lives we lead .Once again,...
