A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

Antonio Banderas (“El Mariachi”) has signed on to play Pablo Picasso in Season 2 of National Geographic’s Emmy-nominated “Genius.” The limited-run series will chronicle the life and work of the Spanish painter.
“The life story of Pablo Picasso has long since fascinated me and I have so much respect for this man, who also comes from my birthplace Málaga,” said Banderas. “I am thrilled to tell an authentic story of one of the most innovative painters in the world.”
“Genius” comes from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, Fox21, Madison Wells Media’s OddLot Entertainment and Eue/Sokolow, and will premiere in 2018.
“Antonio was the natural choice. He, like Picasso, has a no-holds-barred approach to life that will add to the genuineness that we’re looking for,” said Howard. “He has such tremendous range as an actor, who I know will bring this brilliant and unconventional artist to life.

I did a little bit of research for today’s column just to make sure I had my facts right, Googling “Jewish influence on comic books” in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. There were 509,000 hits, from Den of Geek’s Mensch of Steel: Superman’s Jewish Roots to the Daily Beast’s Superman is Jewish?: The Hebrew Roots of America’s Greatest Superhero to Stormfront’s How and Why the Jews Stole the Comic Book Industry.
Wait. What?
Stormfront is a white supremacist site whose “welcome” page reads:

This is a sentence I have been dying to write since I was first able to comprehend words; Warner Brothers is making a Speedy Gonzales feature-length film. Thankfully, Speedy will be voiced by Mexican filmmaker and actor Eugenio Derbez. Derbez had this to say about the role:
“In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales...He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pancho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.”
The movie, currently titled Speedy, is set to be a heist film that will re-introduce the character to a whole new generation of children.

Casey Affleck is set to star in and direct a western called Far Bright Star, and Joaquin Phoenix is set to star. This will be the second collaboration between the two. They previously worked together on the 2010 mockumentary I’m Still Here.
Far Bright Star is based on the novel by Robert Olmstead. According to Variety, “Phoenix will portray a cavalryman leading a ragtag group of young men on a hunt in 1916 for Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. When most of the group die in an attack, he’s left struggling to survive in the desert.”
Apparently Affleck is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps and focus more on producing, writing, and directing films. This seems like a great project for Affleck and Phoenix to take on. With films like Bone Tomahawk and The Hateful Eight, it's good to see westerns are thriving a little more than they used to.

Real-life brother-in-laws and soon to be brothers outside the law in film, Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck are re-teaming for new outlaw western flick Far Bright Star, with the latter on board to direct.
Set against the sun-kissed outback of 1916, Affleck’s new drama will be based on a novel by Robert Olmstead, and it’s understood Damien Ober has been brought on board to transition the bandit story onto the silver screen.
As for Phoenix’s role within Far Bright Star, he’ll lead the western as a grizzled calvary man who, upon recruiting a ragtag bunch of scoundrels to help his plight, sets his crosshairs on a devious Mexican revolutionary known as Pancho Villa. Plans soon take a turn for the worst, however, and when his men are butchered, he’s cast astray in the desert and left fighting for survival.

While Joaquin Phoenix's "meltdown" proved to be a distraction and was widely misunderstood, the quasi-documentary "I'm Still Here" is an absolutely hilarious observation of the relationship between the public, media and celebrity in which Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix display a spirited collaboration, which makes the prospect of their next project all the more enticing. Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck are set to reunite for the Western “Far Bright Star,” in which Joaquin will star and which Affleck will direct, TheWrap has learned. The drama, adapted from the 2009 novel by Robert Olmstead, is set in 1916 and follows an aging cavalryman (Phoenix) who leads a team of men hunting for the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. He is left to survive alone in the desert after the group is attacked and most of the men are killed. Affleck and Phoenix collaborated on 2010’s “I’m Still Here,” in which Phoenix’s fake transition from actor to rapper is.

While I’m Still Here depicted a fake career change for Joaquin Phoenix, it did seem to result in different sensibilities for the sort of projects the actor would take on after. With The Master, The Immigrant, Her, and Inherent Vice marking a four-film streak of incredible performances like few other actors of his generation have produced, Phoenix has now set out to reteam with his I’m Still Here director (and brother-in-law) Casey Affleck for a new project.
Moving out of the faux documentary field and back a century, THR reports Affleck will direct Phoenix in the 1916-set western titled Far Bright Star. Marking Affleck’s narrative directorial debut, the film comes from Robert Olmstead‘s novel, which follows a cavalryman (Phoenix) who leads a group to hunt down Pancho Villa, but things go very wrong and he’s left in the desert attempting to survive. Father knows best. At least that's what Kelly Ripa's husband Mark Consuelos likes to think.
In a new essay for Men's Health, the Nine Lives star opens up about the man he never thought he'd become: his father.
"For better or worse, you always end up sounding like your dad," Consuelos writes of his father Saul Consuelos. "You never think it's going to happen … but when you become a parent, it just happens."
For Consuelos, 44, that means being a strong disciplinarian for his and brood with Ripa – Michael Joseph, 18, Lola Grace, 14, and Joaquin Antonio, 12 – and leaving the fun stuff to grandpa.

Fernando Llanos' Matria was one of the most talked about Mexican documentaries at this year's Morelia. It went on to win the jury award for best Mexican documentary, thanks to Llanos' mixture of a very personal story with the sociopolitical history of Mexico. Llanos' own grandfather, Antolín Jimenez, is the doc's protagonist. He was a man who fought with Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution, became rich during the post-revolution period, and was very keen for the charro culture. In fact, during WWII he led an army of charros with the intention of defending Mexico from a possible Nazi invasion! On the other hand, a dark story about Antolín has been haunting his family for many, many years, to the point that even as a...

Picturehouse has acquired U.S. rights to Gloria, the controversial Mexican biopic based on the rise, fall, and rise of Latin American pop-rock icon Gloria Trevi. The musical drama stars Sofia Espinosa as Trevi, the singer-songwriter who earned the nicknames “The Mexican Madonna” and “The Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop” with her sexually- and politically-charged brand of chart-toppers in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s. After signing off on the project, Trevi attempted last year to block the project from moving forward. A January 2015 release is now planned with Universal Pictures International releasing the film in Mexico and Latin America.
Trevi, who’s sold over 20 million records in her 25-year career, is no stranger to controversy. In 2000 she, manager-husband Sergio Andrade, and a backup singer were arrested and charged with corrupting minors in a sex cult; Trevi spent over four years in jail before being acquitted and freed. Wallace Beery movies: TCM offers a glimpse into Beery’s extensive filmography (photo: Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in ‘Min and Bill’) According to the IMDb, the Wallace Beery Filmography features nearly 240 movie titles, including shorts and features, spanning more than three decades, from 1913 to 1949 — the year of his death at age 64. You’ll be able to catch about a dozen of these Wallace Beery movies on Saturday, August 17, 2013, as Turner Classic Movies continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" series. (See “TCM movie schedule: Wallace Beery from Pancho Villa to Long John Silver.”) Wallace Beery, much like fellow veteran Marie Dressler, with whom he co-starred in Min and Bill and its sequel, Tugboat Annie, was a Hollywood anomaly. At age 45, the ugly, coarse-looking actor became a top box-office draw in the United States after languishing in supporting roles, usually playing villains, throughout most of the silent era. Beery and Dressler,...

4.14 The Sky's The Limit
This was a decent enough episode, with some hijinx and some emotional content. The writers handled three separate story lines and did a good job of bringing them all to a close without feeling rushed, and we have our first taste of what will hopefully kick off the story arc for the rest of this season. Admittedly, the bit with Charlotte Dupres, the ageless wife of our Count St Germain, felt shoehorned into the episode and did little to shed light on what the conflict will be. However, with five episodes left and seeing that Hg will be in the next one (!!!), I have faith that things will get going at a good pace two weeks from now.

Well, ain't that a kick in the head. For those with short memories, around a decade ago, Terry Gilliam went into production on a film called "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," starring his "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" star Johnny Depp as a modern day ad executive somehow transported to medieval Spain, who ends up serving as the Pancho Villa to the legendary Don Quixote (Jean Rochefort), the hero of Miguel de Cervantes' beloved tale. But the film was beset by problems, from financing to floods, and was shut down after a few weeks of filming when it emerged that Rochefort had a chronic back injury that made it almost impossible for him to ride a horse. The whole thing is chronicled in the excellent documentary, "Lost In La Mancha," but in recent years, Gilliam has made headway in reclaiming the rights to the never-finished picture from the insurance company,...

You'd think a movie starring Marlon Brando at the height of his young-firebrand sex appeal, written by Nobel laureate John Steinbeck, and directed by the great Elia Kazan, would be better remembered today. Yet "Viva Zapata!", released exactly 60 years ago (on Feburary 7, 1952), is all but regarded as a footnote in the careers of Brando, Steinbeck, and Kazan. That's a shame, since it's at once a terrifically exciting action film, a heroic biopic, and a penetrating political study. Of course, even then, it was an odd one -- a movie about legendary figures in Mexican history portrayed by an almost Mexican-free cast; a movie about a pro-peasant revolutionary hero made at a time of anti-Communist hysteria in Hollywood. That it got made at all was remarkable, given the battles over censorship and casting, not to mention the battles between Brando and co-star Anthony Quinn, whose bitter tension often erupted into elaborate pranks and practical jokes.

Bulle Ogier and Jacques Rivette on the set of L'Amour fou
In the last issue of Senses of Cinema, Daniel Fairfax reviewed Douglas Morrey and Alison Smith's Jacques Rivette, and now, for Issue 61, Mary Wiles has allowed the editors to choose a chapter from her forthcoming Jacques Rivette. Rolando Caputo's decided to go with the one on L'amour fou (1969) for a number of reasons, but primarily because "the film seems the point of historical conjunction between the end of one wave and the coming of a second wave of filmmakers that washed up in its undertow. At a stretch, one can see the shadow of this film on the cinema of Jean Eustache, Maurice Pialat, Philippe Garrel and others. L'amour fou is a great and wondrous film." And he's running Rivette's 1950 essay "We Are Not Innocent Anymore" as well.

Fresh off an Ecuadorian tour with his No Smoking Orchestra, the twice-awarded Palme d’Or director Emir Kusturica flew to Morocco for the closest thing he can get to downtime. As President of the Jury of the 11th annual Marrakech International Film Festival, Kusturica got to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes, absorbing a dozen or so independent films from around the world in a week. His second time at the festival, the auteur was honored with the Golden Star award in 2009 for his outstanding career.
While he spent most of the festival behind the scenes, apart from presenting a new Golden Star to another like-minded conspirator, Terry Gilliam, Kusturica granted us a rare interview at La Mamounia in a dark intimate conference room. He detailed what he’s up to when he’s not busy being a professional Jury President, and it’s a doozy. To call Kusturica a renaissance man is an understatement.

Deadline is reporting that Jj Abrams has found his writers for the featured film version of Boilerplate. Abrams and Paramount Pictures have hired Jd Payne and Patrick McKay (Goliath, the Old Testament). Boilerplate is a movie that follows a robot in the late 19th Century that is built for battle. During the robot's battles it'll come into contact with many famous historical figures like Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa. Paramount Pictures and Jj Abrams’ Bad Robot have hired Jd Payne and Patrick McKay to write the script for Boilerplate, based on the Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel. Bad Robot will produce with Outlaw Productions’ Deborah Newmyer. The storyline: the robot Boilerplate was built in the late 19th Century to replace men in battle. There’s something about Emir Kusturica that makes him different than the rest of directors. My friend Matthew, who wrote the book Boy Culture (which his blog is named after), recently interviewed the late Sal Mineo's boyfriend Courtney Burr, who is an acting teacher, in connection with a newish book on one of the most important Young Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 60s. The book in question was written by Michael Gregg Michaud. Burr had previously declined requests to help with other Mineo related books because he felt they were just after the sensationalistic aspects of the actor's legend (his sex life or his murder in the 70s -- famously none of the legendary trio from Rebel Without a Cause lived long enough to die of natural causes).
It's a lengthy interview for those of you who are interested in Sal Mineo or the difficulties for "exotic" actors or queer actors in showbiz history. The bit where Burr talks about Sal's career choices...

Whether they are glossy or gritty, embedded or independent, the best war documentaries still reveal the sheer savagery of combat, says film-maker Kevin Macdonald
When was real combat first recorded on film? Probably almost as soon as the "cinematograph" camera was invented. They say that around 1916, Mexican revolutionary general Pancho Villa used to stage battles for his cameramen to record when the light was good. During the second world war, John Ford and John Huston were just two of the great Hollywood directors who picked up 16mm cameras to film real action for, respectively, The Battle of Midway and Report from the Aleutians. But these were straightforward propaganda movies for the most part: they made no pretences of showing what combat was really like for a soldier – what it felt like physiologically and psychologically. Their aim was to stir the patriotic fervour of the audience and to soothe their anxieties about the conflict.

We already had a little chat about Emir Kusturica‘s upcoming biopic of the legendary Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, so you probably remember that Johnny Depp was set to star as Villa, right?
And we had nothing against that decision. But it looks that things are going to change now, because, according to the latest reports, Depp is no longer attached to the whole thing!
On the other hand, Kusturica still intends to make the film, and the leading role will be given to either Gael Garcia Bernal or Benicio del Toro. Check out the rest of this report for more details.
As guys from Serbian site reported, Kusturica will soon meet Gael Garcia Bernal and Benicio del Toro in Cuba, after which he will come to a final decision as to who gets to be Villa in his new production. Meanwhile, as the director himself has announced, the film...

With actor Johnny Depp’s busy schedule, it’s no surprise he may have to give up a project or two. Bleeding Cool is reporting Depp has dropped out of Emir Kusturica-directed “The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Seven Fingers.” The film is based off the James Carlos Blake’s book called, “The Friends of Pancho Villa.” The book’s official synopsis is “Killers of men and lovers of life, they fought for freedom. For the Revolucion. For Villa. In return, they received a soldier’s highest honor. They shared life—and death—with the mightiest hero in all of Mexico.” In addition, Blic Online has reported either actors Gael Garcia Bernal or Benicio Del Toro may be the replacement in Depp’s role. Ironically, both men played another revolutionary leader of Che Guevara in films. Salma Hayek is still attached to co-star in the film.

At the end of 2009, we heard that Johnny Depp might be re-teaming with his Arizona Dream director Emir Kusturica for the long-titled film Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers. an adaptation of James Carlos Blake's novel The Friends of Pancho Villa. However Blic Online (via Bleeding Cool) reports that Depp is no longer involved with the project, and Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Benicio del Toro (The Wolfman) are the frontrunners to play the titular revolutionary. The director will apparently meet with both actors in Cuba very soon and make his decision after that. Read on! The story will focus on how Villa, an early 20th-century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and a hero to the poor, and his ragtag team of bandits had a great time fighting and robbing the rich, but also dancing, partying and making love. ...

Depp was once believed to be a lock for playing the titular character in Emir Kusturica’s upcoming film The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Seven Fingers, but delays on the project and too many upcoming obligations on his plate have forced him to step back from the role. This couldn’t have been an easy decision as reportedly he and Kusturica are pretty chummy. But what could be seen as a fairly big blow for the developing feature might not be so big of a deal after all. Blic reports that there are already two possible stars likely to step in and take Depp’s place. More good news abounds due to the fact that they are both accomplished actors, and they are both actually Hispanic to some degree. Maybe Pancho Villa didn’t need to be played by the kid from 21 Jump Street after all? The...

With Johnny Depp almost completely giving up his once considerable character acting chops these days – being happy and content enough to spend his days as a paycheck/blockbuster actor – his attachment to play Mexican Revolutionist Pancho Villa in an obscure, Spanish-language performance piece, always looked vulnerable for the chop. And so it is with little surprise that news has filtered through from a Serbian site (via Bleeding Cool) that Depp has dropped the challenging project from his schedule and is no longer attached.
Thankfully, even without his former star, director Emir Kusturica (who worked with Depp way back in 1993 with Arizona Dream) still intends to make the film and there’s interest from two of Depp’s more interesting peers who are now circling the project, namely Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garica Bernal – both of whom have memorably played another revolutionist on film, Che Guevara!

When we heard that Johnny Depp would play the lead [1] in The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Seven Fingers for Emir Kusturica, a few things ran through my mind. First, surprise at the fact that the constantly-busy actor would be in the sort of marginal film (with respect to the mainstream box office) that was once a big part of his resume. Second, that it was more than a bit unfortunate that a Latin actor didn't get the role. Third, I was willing to accept that considering that it meant Emir Kusturica would gain a much larger audience for the film. Things have now changed. To no one's great surprise, Johnny Depp's schedule will prevent him from playing Pancho Villa. As a replacement. Mr. Kusturica is reportedly eying Gael Garcia Bernal and Benicio del Toro. That should take care of some of the major arguments against the film.

Benicio del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal have emerged as the two leading candidates to star in Emir Kusturica's "Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers" reports Blic.
Johnny Depp was originally lined up to play the infamous Mexican revolutionary general in the film which was supposed to start shooting this month. Since then however the project, an adaptation of James Carlos Blake‘s novel "The Friends of Pancho Villa", has hit a few rough spots and Depp dropped out.
Salma Hayek, originally attached to the project when Depp was still on board, remains involved. Kusturica will soon meet the two actors in Cuba and make a decision after that.

It's no surprise that with so many plates spinning, one of them had to fall eventually. Johnny Depp was previously attached to play the lead in Emir Kusturica's (deep breath) The Seven Friends Of Pancho Villa And The Woman With Seven Fingers, but now he's had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with his zillion other projects. It's a big loss for the film, as it will likely receive considerably less attention with Depp's departure, but it does open the door for an actor who...

Johnny Depp was supposed to play Pancho Villa, and that seemed like a good idea. After all, if he can play a Native American then why not a notorious Mexican revolutionary general. I guess. He did play Don Juan DeMarco. Johnny Depp knows his espanol. The movie is the awesomely titled Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers which at one point was supposed to be re-titled Wild Roses, Tender Heart, which is far less awesome. It was also supposed to start shooting this month and that didn.t happen. What I.m getting at here is that the whole project has sort of turned into a mess. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Depp has dropped out and will no longer be playing Pancho, who after his work as a general later went on to found a chain of low-rent tex-mex...

I feel like much of my year has revolved around tracking the casting of Johnny Depp. He’s going to be the Huntsman!—no, no he’s not. He’s going to play the Wizard of Oz!—nope, nevermind. Johnny Depp has dropped out of Emir Kusturica's Pancho Villa film The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Seven Fingers, this comes just as the director was about to start filming! Salma Haye is still attached to star, but now a male lead is in dire need.
The screenplay is based on James Carlos Blake’s fact-and-legend blending The Friends of Pancho Villa. Here is blurb about the book:
Killers of men and lovers of life, they fought for freedom. For the Revolucion. For Villa. In return, they received a soldier’s highest honor. They shared life–and death–with the mightiest hero in all of Mexico.
This makes complete sense, Depp can't do every movie that he may want to. The actor already has a full slate of awesome films on the horizon. It is a bit disappointing, because this sounds like a perfect role for him.

Just about a week ago we reported that Robert Downey Jr. signed on to voice Mr. Peabody, the genius talking dog from the classic cartoon series that was part of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. The role of Sherman, who is described as being more naive than dim-witted, has not been cast yet. Rob Minkoff will direct from a script by Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin. Now you can see the first bit of concept art of Mr. Peabody, the character that Downey will voice in the film.
The original series Peabody’s Improbable History featured a talking dog genius named Mister Peabody who had a pet boy named Sherman. Peabody and Sherman would use Peabody’s “Wabac machine” (pronounced “way-back”, and partially a play on names of early computers such as Univac and Eniac) to go back in time to discover the real story behind historical events, and in many cases,...

There's a report that the studio wants to make fifth and sixth Pirates of the Caribbean films, and plans to shoot them back to back. HitFix [3] reports the news. There are a lot of questions about how and when these films would proceed. We likely won't hear anything about a director until this fourth film opens next year. Every few days, the Hollywood Cog sends me manila envelopes stuffed with cryptic typewritten messages with Los Angeles postmarks and no return address. Lately, the envelopes have had a jasmine and lavender scent, so who knows where this is leading. Who I think now is probably a she (although, given my perception on the site, who knows?) provides quite a bit of information that I never use, that I file away. By the time it gets to me on the East Coast, a lot of the information has already been reported by Deadline or The L.A.
