Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.
We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).
Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.
However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

Marvel Studios is starting out 2024 on a sturdy footing as it begins to refocus and rebuild its TV shows.
Coming off the strong opening of Echo, its crime series centered on Indigenous and deaf anti-heroine Maya Lopez, Marvel next turns its attention to Daredevil: Born Again, which restarts production Monday after a lengthy hiatus.
Philip Silvera, who acted as stunt and fight coordinator on the Netflix version of Daredevil that ran in the mid-2010s, has returned to the fold to act as stunt coordinator and second unit director for the new series.
His hiring is the latest example of the retooling Born Again underwent as it was changed from a legal procedural to something that aims to harken back to the gritty and violent tone of that first well-regarded series. It also reaffirms the show’s focus on more street-level heroics and less on heavy (and costly) visual effects.

[This story contains spoilers for Echo.]
Echo star Vincent D’Onofrio isn’t ready to say whether Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk has been healed by Maya Lopez.
At the end of Disney+ and Hulu’s five-episode miniseries, Echo, Maya (Alaqua Cox) utilizes the powers of her Choctaw ancestors to enter Fisk’s mind and potentially heal him of his childhood trauma involving his abusive father and the ball-peen hammer he used to stop him. Once Maya releases Fisk from her grip, he desperately wants to know what she’s done to him, but he’s whisked away before the police arrive on the scene.
At this moment, D’Onofrio can’t give the game away, especially with Daredevil: Born Again still en route.
“That’s a good question, but I can’t answer that question. That question is boxed up in a lot of other stuff, and I can’t open that box,” D’Onofrio tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Around halfway through the fifth episode of Marvel’s Echo, viewers are dropped into the experience of a Choctaw Nation powwow. It’s a first-of-its-kind moment for the MCU, featuring dancers in regalia singing to the drum-driven music. In a poorly lit nearby barn stands Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, in a face-off alongside the women of her family against a notorious New York crime kingpin, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).
Director Sydney Freeland pitched the moment to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige by recalling how she grew up reading Marvel Comics and attending powwows.
“I’ve read comic books at powwows, for sure — I’ve probably fallen asleep reading comic books at powwows — but those two things never overlapped,” Freeland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So to have those things come together, to have Kingpin at a powwow, it is a very surreal experience.”

The series traces Maya Lopez’s escape to her Choctaw Nation roots in Oklahoma after her dramatic introduction in Marvel Studios’ 2021 hit, Hawkeye. Exclusive: After making all five episodes available on Tuesday, Marvel Studios’ Echo has premiered at No. 1 on both the Disney+ and Hulu platforms. The series marked several firsts for a Marvel show: the first TV-ma series developed at the studio, the first time every episode was available to subscribers at once and the first time a whole Marvel series has been available on both platforms at the same time.
It’s also the first show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which the studio describes as a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. While the studio hasn’t put out numbers, Echo is doing better than some of the consistently top-performing titles.
The series is getting recognition from both the Indigenous and deaf communities for its representation onscreen and off. Deadline’s Dominic Patten raved about the show, saying...

"Echo" looks as though it could mark the moment the Marvel Cinematic Universe might get back on track. This is the very first "Marvel Spotlight" series, indicating that "Echo" is its own show and doesn't require audiences to have seen a thousand other MCU projects to understand the narrative. It also means we'll be getting a lot more focus on character rather than events that occur simply to progress the overall MCU narrative. Pretty neat! Especially since we've had far too much MCU in recent years, and most of it has just been an excuse to set up whatever comes next in the saga.
Anyone who saw the "Echo" trailer will know this TV-ma series is a decidedly gritty affair, following in the footsteps of the original Marvel Netflix shows that were focused on "street-level" heroes rather than the grand spectacles of the MCU movies. In the trailer, Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez/Echo,...

Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel’s “Echo” on Disney+.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appears in the very first episode of “Echo” on Disney+, and he’s instantly forgettable.
That’s not an indictment of the character Cox originated in “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix, now resurrected for the MCU, but an endorsement of the scene around him; a one-shot combat sequence in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) eventually kills one of her opponents and marks Daredevil as an enemy.
The scene is striking enough on-screen, but also a key moment in how various teams intent on getting “Echo” right came together — the writing, the stunts, the direction, and an overarching sensitivity to a deaf character’s point of view.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been having a rough time lately. From a quality standpoint, it shows in every single one of their products and the audience’s reactions to them. It seems people are not just interested enough to follow the overarching story of the MCU in these new phases. With more movies and TV series coming out in the future, it might be that the MCU will plummet even deeper. Echo, the latest Marvel TV series on Disney+, dares to go in a different direction, and just for that, it is partially successful.

Throughout the 2010s, filmmakers seemed determined to one-up one another when it came to crafting single-take action scenes. This spirit of competition even filtered its way into television starting with the famous oner from "True Detective" season 1, in which all hell breaks loose in a housing project. Netflix's "Daredevil" series would subsequently get in on the trend, delivering a brutal season 1 tussle in which the masked Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) smacks the everlasting snot out of a gang of thugs in a hallway while trying to rescue a kidnapped boy. Years later, "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" cheekily nodded to this moment before the titular superhero set to work "smashing" Matt in a far more agreeable manner.

Before she was cast in Marvel’s 2021 Disney+ series “Hawkeye,” Alaqua Cox had never considered becoming an actor. But then several friends sent her the same flyer looking for Indigenous deaf women in their 20s to try out for a new TV show.
“I said, ‘No, I don’t want to do that,’ and then two other friends sent it to me,” Cox says via an Asl interpreter. “Now a bunch of people have sent it to me, so I thought, ‘I’ll give it a shot.’”
Cox went through a three-month audition process to play Maya Lopez, a tough-as-nails enforcer for crime lord Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who comes to question her loyalties when she learns Fisk ordered the death of her father, William (Zahn McClarnon). Marvel's "Echo" is breaking a lot of barriers by simply existing. To begin with, it's the debut of the Marvel Spotlight banner, which aims to deliver more grounded, character-driven stories that are set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe but don't necessarily require an extensive amount of homework to understand. But more importantly, it's the first time that a Choctaw woman and the people of the Choctaw Nation at large have taken the spotlight in a major Hollywood production. On top of that, "Echo" star Alaqua Cox was born deaf and actually lives life as amputee with a prosthetic leg, just like the character she's portraying.
All of this makes Marvel's "Echo" quite a milestone in representation. In order to capture this underrepresented communities accurately, director and Navajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland made sure to bring in creatives who also represented these communities. As the filmmaker explained to ABC 7 Chicago, "The...

Echo, Marvel and Disney’s new five-part limited series, is a groundbreaking piece of television.
This isn’t the same — at least not necessarily — as being a great piece of television, but let’s start by giving credit where credit is due.
Doing an ostensible superhero show — it isn’t always clear that’s what Echo is — in which your protagonist is an Indigenous, deaf amputee will always be steering your vehicle off the paved roads and into uncharted territory. Doing it in a way that respects and honors all three of those outsider experiences without making it feel like you’re working your way down a representational checklist is an audacious and worthwhile thing.
In that respect, Echo is a triumph. It’s a series of moments that alternately had me thinking, “Huh, that feels different and right” and “Huh, I can’t believe somebody was able to do that in a Marvel show.

All of the signaling around Echo has suggested yet another Marvel Cinematic Universe fiasco in a long line of them in the years since Avengers: Endgame. The miniseries, spinning off a supporting character from 2021’s Hawkeye, was originally set to premiere last November, then got pushed back to an early January window that’s rarely where networks or streamers put their best shows. It is the first binge release of any Marvel Studios-produced series, where Disney+ has previously done very well getting fans to come back week after week...

There were two prevailing takeaways from the "Hawkeye" series on Disney+. The first was that Florence Pugh makes everything better, even when all she does is show up and eat macaroni and cheese for a scene. The other was that Alaqua Cox's portrayal of the deaf Native American Tracksuit Mafia mercenary Maya Lopez was incredibly compelling and that the character herself was more than deserving of a spinoff series.
That's exactly what we're getting with "Echo," a series that follows Maya as she evades her crime boss "uncle" Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), and his forces after that whole "shooting him" thing on "Hawkeye." The show's trailers have teased it as a return to the violent, so-called "street-level" drama of Marvel's Netflix series, complete with appearances by Fisk and a certain Devil of Hell's Kitchen. But more than that, "Echo" is about Maya reconnecting with her Native American...

Tonight, ‘Echo’ debuts on Disney+, marking a significant milestone for the MCU. It stands as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, offering a unique entry point for viewers unfamiliar with the character. The narrative is character-driven, allowing audiences to engage without prior knowledge of related shows or movies. Notably, ‘Echo’ is the first Disney+ show to receive a TV-ma rating, attributed to its intense violence and themes.
Fans anticipate the excitement of Daredevil’s appearance and speculate on the importance of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in the series. ‘Echo’ diverges from the typical redemption story, showcasing Maya Lopez as a character who started as a villain and remains one throughout the show. Sydney Freeland, the director of ‘Echo,’ explained in a press conference the deliberate decision to take the series in a unique direction compared to other MCU projects.

Tonight, ‘Echo’ arrives at Disney+, MCU’s “first” when it comes to several aspects. ‘Echo’ is the first MCU show under Marvel Spotlight banner, meaning that you don’t have to watch previous shows or movies connected to the character to understand it, and the story will be character-driven. Secondly, it’s also the first Disney+ show to receive TV-ma rating due to its violence and themes.
Fan’s are excited both due to Daredevil being an appearance here and there but also because it seems that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpint will be da somewhat important element in the show. One thing that also makes Echo unique is that the show won’t be a redemption story, Maya Lopez started out as a villain and will ultimately end up a villain in the show as well. Audiences first met Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) in the 2021 series Hawkeye. Now they’re going to find out where it all began for the formidable, complex fighter known as “Echo,” who holds the designation of being the first Native American and deaf character to headline a Marvel Studios show. And director Sydney Freeland is just as pumped as fans are for the character’s debut. “I’m incredibly excited for people to get to see Alaqua,” she tells TV Insider. “She went from a total of six days on Hawkeye being her sum total acting experience to becoming a number one on a Marvel television show, with a 90-day shoot that she was in the majority of the scenes on. I can’t even comprehend what that looks like for her. But she rose to the challenge and just inhabited the character and brought a gravitas, an empathy, and a...

Marvel’s Echo series marks the launch of the company’s Marvel Spotlight banner, which will be their platform for “more grounded, character-driven stories” that don’t require a knowledge of “larger MCU continuity” – although the show does serve as a follow-up to the Hawkeye series and has ties to the Netflix Daredevil show and the upcoming Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again. All of these connections are made clear in the most recent trailer for Echo, which uses stock footage from Hawkeye and Daredevil up front. You can watch it in the embed above.
The Echo character was introduced in the pages of the Daredevil comic book back in 1999, so it’s fitting that her show will have firm ties to Daredevil.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its fair share of good villains over the years, from Tom Hiddleston's Loki to Josh Brolin's Thanos. But few actors have ever embodied a villain from the pages of Marvel Comics quite as well as Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. First making his debut in Netflix's "Daredevil" and later appearing in "Hawkeye," this is one of those legendary perfect actor/perfect role pairings. And good news for those who are fans of the actor as Fisk: he's a big part of the "Echo" series on Disney+. What's more, it sounds like it's going to be the Fisk we all love.

A face from the past takes centre stage in the latest from Marvel Studios. Echo leaps onto Disney+ from 10 January, and sees the return of Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) who first appeared in Hawkeye, but takes us back to her origins story.
The first show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which focusses on character driven stories, it shows Maya discovering that her ruthless behaviour in New York has followed to her home town. She faces numerous challenges, including both her native heritage and her deafness, as well as the consequences of her clash with one of Marvel’s biggest bads – Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). Cox, herself, is deaf and a member of the Menominee tribe.

Echo‘s Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) is packing some serious punches when the series launches on January 9. As the first TV-ma-rated Marvel original for Disney+, the series brings Maya’s world to life with the help of some familiar faces like her estranged honorary uncle Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), a.k.a. Wilson Fisk, and his foe, Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil who makes his third appearance in the MCU since diving in wtih Spider-Man: No Way Home. While fans may have met Maya in 2021’s Hawkeye, they’ll get a clearer picture of her involvement in Fisk’s organization and pick up where she left off after having shot the boss in retaliation for having ordered the deadly hit on her father William (Zahn McClarnon). Along the way, she’ll be kicking some serious butt, captured on camera by director Sydney Freeland who helps set the tone and style of Maya’s fight sequences,...

"Echo" serves as a spin-off of 2021's "Hawkeye" and, unassuming though it may be relative to the often grandiose nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this street-level Disney+ series is paving the way for the future. This, according to Marvel Studios' head of streaming Brad Winderbaum, who believes that this show's exploration of a smaller corner of this vast universe is indicative of what we can expect moving forward.

As Indigenous woman filmmakers, we knew that our path through the industry would be narrow and that our film, Fancy Dance, would have a small window for success based on the abysmal record of representation for Indigenous folx in Hollywood. As such, we channeled our collective wills as granddaughters of Dust Bowl survivors, descendants of genocide and avowed followers of the indomitable Merata Mita to give this film the best shot possible.

Echo will launch a new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Disney+ series, starring Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, will be the first one under Marvel’s Spotlight banner, which is rooted in Marvel Comics’ decades-long publishing history. In the comics, Spotlight was an anthology series introduced in 1971 that served as the origin of characters like Ghost Rider and Spider-Woman.
“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity,” Brad Winderbaum, the studio’s head of streaming, television and animation, shared on Marvel.com.
He continued, “Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

He continued, “Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

The initial trailer for ‘Echo,’ an upcoming Disney+ series, was released last Friday, sparking newfound excitement among fans. The trailer highlighted numerous action-packed scenes, a substantial focus on Kingpin, and subtle nods to Maya’s Native American heritage.
For avid followers of Marvel’s “The Man Without Fear,” there were a few glimpses of Daredevil as well.
However, as per a reliable source leaking information on CanWeGetSomeToast on X, it seems Daredevil won’t play a significant role in the series, despite the inclusion of Daredevil’s most formidable cinematic adversary to date.
This should go without saying, but do Not expect to see a lot of Daredevil in ‘Echo’.
Daredevil’s role is nothing more than a cameo to show him and Kingpin were active in the background of the MCU. Make no mistake, this is Maya’s show. https://t.co/2HGzXgUi8B pic.twitter.com/98k3konOmZ...

The first trailer for ‘Echo,’ an upcoming Disney+ show, dropped on Friday, and fans are probably for the first time excited about the show. The scenes featured in the trailer showcased a lot of action, a lot of Kingpin, and nods to Maya’s Native American heritage.
For the fans of Marvel’s “The Man Without Fear,” a couple of scenes featuring Daredevil were also showcased.
But according to a reputable leaker on CanWeGetSomeToast on X, Daredevil won’t be a huge part of the series at all despite featuring Daredevil’s greatest cinematic villain so far.
