At this year’s inaugural Canneseries television festival, one of last year’s most ambitious — and straight up chilling — digital short film series is getting a splashy new premiere. “Bite Size Shorts” were initially created as a campaign by Fox Networks Group’s integrated agency, led by All City’s Chief Content Officer Tony Sella and Executive Vice President David Worthen Brooks, along with + Fox Digital Studio producers Arbi Pedrossian and Steven Johnson.
The 10-part series, meant to creatively show off Mars candies, was first rolled out on the Fox broadcast network and FX last October in the lead up to Halloween. Each two-minute episode is a standalone horror short, featuring new offerings from filmmakers like Ben Franklin & Anthony Melton, Toby Meakins, John William Ross, Andrew Laurich, Michael Thelin, Jerome Sable, Chris Leone, Jack Bishop & Justin Nijm, Rob Savage, and Chris Leone. Ten shorts will be screened at the festival,...

Digital-first studios Gunpowder & Sky and Supergravity Pictures are teaming together on a feature-length thriller about a small-town skate crew whose obsession with becoming Internet-famous leads to unrelenting horror, the companies announced today. This marks the first co-production between the two studios, though Gunpowder & Sky was an early investor in Supergravity. A release date has yet to be announced.
Jerome Sable (pictured above, right) will direct the as-yet-untitled slasher film based on a script he is writing with Nicholas Musurca (left). The two previously collaborated on a Sundance award-winning horror musical called The Legend of Beaver Dam, as well as V Is For Vacation, a short about a wild boys trip that turns deadly over Skype.

Spoofaway Camp: Strauss-Schulson’s Playful Mash-up Takes a Tumble On You
Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose last feature was A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) returns with The Final Girls, an entertaining surprise of sorts as a playful riff on early 80s slasher tropes as it borrows the cosmic charms at play in classic titles like Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1984) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
With a talented young cast and plenty of boisterous energy, Strauss-Schulson manages to instill a thread of sentimentality in this generally comedic feature, and ironically makes us care more for its characters than the films it pays homage to actually manage. Those looking for genre thrills will most likely be disappointed, and its eventual outcome is a bit too hoary despite its enjoyable cuteness from screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (the team who wrote Rose McGowan’s 2014 short film Dawn,...

Remember learning your ABCs? “A is for apple” and so on? Well, fright film fans have been able to revisit the American alphabet and look at it in twisted new ways thanks to The ABCs of Death, a massive horror anthology movie comprised of 26 short films about dying, each one standing for a different letter in the alphabet. Magnet Releasing unleashed ABCs of Death 2 last year, the follow-up to their innovative anthology setup that is now available on home media, and Magnolia Home Entertainment has provided us with two Blu-ray copies of the blood-soaked sequel to give away to a couple of lucky Daily Dead readers.

The more I watch The ABCs Of Death 2, the more I love it. Seriously. I can’t get enough. This isn’t just another gimmicky horror anthology that throws some random short stories together in hopes of a cult following, but instead an intelligent collection of grim fables that *mostly* deliver death, destruction, and a heaping helping of mental unrest. The original film worked as a genre experiment, testing the waters of insanity to see if audiences would react favorably, but its sequel shows more confidence, creativity, and gusto when analyzing all the shorts as one marketable package. With twenty-six different segments, there’s bound to be some stinkers, but where The ABCs Of Death is a 50/50 mixed bag, The ABCs Of Death 2 showcases an impressive amount of successes compared to a few atrocious letters that are better left forgotten – but the ratio still demands an enthusiastic encore.

Billed as Friday the 13th meets Glee, Stage Fright is a new take on the classic slasher formula which sees Kylie Swanson (Driver) brutally murdered after her star-making performance in the Broadway-bound musical ‘The Haunting of the Opera’. Ten years later, her producer Roger McCall (Loaf) is running a musical theatre summer camp where Kylie’s twins, Camilla and Buddy help out. ★★★★☆ There's an eerily effective collision of genres happening in Stage Fright (2014). Horror, comedy and musical are all at play and, under the masterful hand of writer and director Jerome Sable, make for deliciously gory fun. While it hearkens back to the canon of 1980s "summer camp slasher" films , there's a refreshing tongue-in-cheek comedic tone here. Viewers can get the all-knowing wink as well as some guts on the side. Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) is having a rough time: ten years ago, her mother, Broadway diva Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver), was murdered. This unexpected death leaves Camilla and her brother Buddy (Douglas Smith) in the care of their mother's manager, Roger McCall (Meat Loaf).

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

Same Old Song: Scant Few Highlights Justify Lengthy Omnibus
Well, alphabet soup horror is back with The ABCs of Death 2, a follow-up to the first installment (The ABCs of Death) which had twenty six different directors helming a short film based on a word starting with each letter. Now, twenty six more directors try their hand at this formula, which is generally hit and miss, a complaint launched the first time around. With short films of such meager running time amidst a sea of similarly constructed items, most of these tend to cancel each other out. A struggle to remain vibrantly memorable also hobbles a sequence or two. And yet, there are a few little masterful strokes here, though enjoying them feels a bit like trudging through a bargain bin.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

In ABCs of Death 2, 26 directors contributed a short film, each taking one letter from the alphabet as their inspiration. Nigerian director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen brings us a supernatural tale that has historical roots in L is for Legacy, and he shared his thoughts on the subject matter and the practical makeup effects used to bring his beast to life:
“It was a true event in history and that legacy kept on. Someone was wrongly accused and the beast came out as the manifestation of the curse that was placed on the people. I chose this story because I like the idea of the supernatural having control over the physical. Somebody that was innocent was wrongly accused and whatever he pronounced became real. I’m a strong believer of the spiritual and that story resonated with me. If you are true and decent, the physical will work for you, no matter how misunderstood you are.

Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.

The movie consists of 26 short films, and each one has a completely different director and storyline. Some of the directors in the mix include Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), and the Soskasisters (American Mary). Here's the synopsis:

With Fantastic Fest 2014 drawing closer by the day, the horror lover inside me is ready to burst out in a fit of obsessive jubilation knowing the onslaught of movies I’ll be experiencing. Movies like Tusk, V/H/S Viral, The Babadook, and so many others are ready to push my moral boundaries and chill me to the bone, but one project has me uniquely excited, and that’s The ABCs Of Death 2.
I rather like The ABCs Of Death and I’ve since made that pretty clear here at We Got This Covered, so after watching yesterday’s freshly released Red Band trailer for the equally ambitious sequel, I’m officially on pins and needles. Loaded with exploding heads, decapitations, brutality, and gigantic genitalia, this new crop of directors seems to be upping the ante wherever possible, which is expected from filmmakers like the Soska Sisters, Jerome Sable...

I really enjoyed the first ABCs of Death horror anthology film, and the sequel looks like it will be at least as equally insane. 26 short films directed by 26 talented directors make up the ABCs of Death 2 and those films are disgustingly brutal, disturbing, and very funny. Each film corresponds with a letter from the alphabet, and the directors had complete freedom to do what they wanted with the letter assigned. This first red-band trailer for the movie gives you a little taste of the complete madness that awaits horror fans.

The ABC’s Of Death was an ambitious horror anthology from 2012 consisting of 26 shorts from 26 different directors all of whom accepted the challenge of taking a single letter of the alphabet, picking a word that begins with that letter and then making a short film about death with that word at the core.
We have had anthologies with segments from different directorial hands before (the VHS films are a good example) but with 27 (the letter ‘O’ had two directors) you’d have expected the result to be unwieldy and inconsistent. And it was, yet the crazy concept mostly worked. I only recall a couple of duds, and since these films only lasted 3 or 4 minutes each, taking the bad with the good was painless. It will be interesting to see what they do with the sequel. It appears the format is identical with films from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between.

There are many ways to die—peaceful, painful, and otherwise—and when it was given a wide release in 2013, Magnet Releasing’s The ABCs of Death showed us 26 of them. Soon ABCs of Death 2 will display 26 more paths to perishing, each one starting with a different letter of the alphabet, and the film’s red band trailer shows that someone’s violent end could come from an action figure playset.
Those looking to watch a new horror anthology film this Halloween season are in luck, as ABCs of Death 2 hits VOD platforms on October 2nd before coming out in select theaters on October 31st. ABCs of Death 2 will make its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this September.

I don't know what to say, but this red band trailer for ABCs of Death 2 is doing nothing for me, it just looks cheap and uninspired, but perhaps I'm just in a bad mood because I think that's sort of the film's intention. The trailer is certainly gory and beyond what we most often get from a red band trailer, which is probably why it was labeled "extreme" in the email I received, but I guess I just don't see the humor in it, at least not as it's presented here in this trailer. The film brings together 26 directors for 26 different segments, all representing a letter of the alphabet and each director was given free reign as long as their segment was inspired by a word beginning with their respective letter and a story involving death. Said directors are Alejandro Brugues, Bill Plympton, Chris Nash, Dennison Ramalho, Erik Matti,...

Glee and Friday The 13th collide in Jerome Sable's tongue-in-cheek slasher musical, which strains for Rocky Horror greatness, but ends up horrifying for all the wrong reasons. Despite sharing a name with five other films (among them Hitchcock's and Michael Soavi's superior efforts), Stage Fright has nothing to do with any of them, instead focussing on a summer camp for stage kids. Overseen by Meat Loaf's fame-hungry Roger McCall, the campers are preparing to put on a new production of The Haunting Of The Opera (nod, wink), which just so...

When Roger decides to revive ‘The Haunting of the Opera’ kabuki-style for the end of term entertainment, Camilla wants her mother’s cursed role. Horror musicals don't come around all that often, but we were treated to one this year by the name of Stage Fright, featuring the likes of Meat Loaf and Minnie Driver. The film's soundtrack is on its way, and we have all the details right here.
Lakeshore Records will release the Stage Fright – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 19th and on CD September 23rd. Stage Fright features performances by Meat Loaf, Minnie Driver, Allie MacDonald, the Metal Killer, and more.
The film’s writer/director Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion composed the music and lyrics for this "Glee" meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show musical comedy, producing a genre-bending score that mixes heavy metal rock with a full orchestral sound. We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. "In 2014, we are taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of decadence, destruction and debauchery." - Tim League As much as I love events like Cannes, Sundance, or Toronto, I can't imagine the directors of those festivals ever issuing that statement. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. We’ve got sequels like The ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral, and originals like Kevin Smith’s anticipated Tusk and The Babadook.
