Entertainment Luz Noceda, the protagonist of the show, is a 14-year-old who wants to become a witch.Tnm StaffDisney has given us many warm and memorable animation films, but it is not particularly known for being inclusive in representing the Lgbtqi+ community. Which is why, when it came out that Luz Noceda, the 14-year-old protagonist of a new series on the Disney Channel called The Owl House, is a bisexual character, it was cause for celebration. Luz has made history by becoming Disney’s first bisexual lead. Dana Terrace, who created the series, confirmed the same. On the show, Luz, a teenager, goes to another world to become a witch despite not having magical abilities. Dana said that she was open about her intention to put queer kids in the main cast. However, she was initially told by certain Disney leadership that she “could not represent any form of bi...

Joshua Rush just came out as bisexual in a moving message to his fans. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, the 17-year-old Andi Mack actor—who played Cyrus on the Disney Channel series, the TV network's first Lgbtq character—opened up to his followers about his sexuality. "first to respond to this tweet is bi lol," Rush tweeted, before replying to his post. "first! i win! it's me. i'm bi. And now that I've said that, I have a few things to rant about. There are more important things to talk about than me liking a whole bunch of genders, but I do want to share a few things with you guys." "I saw so many of you watch Cyrus come out and said 'Hey!...

Over three seasons, Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack” has tackled everything from learning disabilities to coming out. Centered on a multi-generational Asian American family, the show follows the titular Andi Mack (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) as she wades through middle school life after learning a bombshell of her own: that the woman she thought was her older sister, Bex (Lilan Bowden), is actually her biological mother and Andi’s birth, a result of an unplanned pregnancy. But now the series that won both a GLAAD Award and a Television Academy Honor for “television with a conscience” in 2018, is signing off.
The show ends its run with Andi grappling with the possibility of leaving her friends for art school.
“I didn’t want to end with a cliffhanger. I believe people will miss Andi and her friends and her family,” creator and co-executive producer Terri Minsky tells Variety. “To me,...

Promoting strong female characters was very much on brand for several of Disney Channel’s star characters at Saturday’s Disney Channel Fan Fest held at California Adventure Park, a day-long event that treated kids and their families to a bevy of fan-focused activities, from Q&A sessions to musical performances and meet and greets with Disney Channel stars.
Sofia Carson, who stars as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen in Disney Channel’s original movies “Descendants” and “Descendants 2,” revealed that in the third installation her character will continue to be a positive role model for young viewers.
“Evie has always been very much focused on her heart and what she cares about most is giving back and especially empowering young girls and young women everywhere, so you’ll especially see that in ‘Descendants 3,’ said Carson, who also joined the cast of the Freeform drama series “Pretty Little Liars” this past year.

Not only is the character of Cyrus Jewish, but he also happens to be gay. Joshua told Good Morning America that Cyrus allows all people’s stories to be valid and that his life circumstances contribute to “making diversity normal”. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about “Andi Mack” Season 2, including its finale.]
Amidst a month filled with culturally relevant movies and TV shows starring actors of Asian descent, add Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack,” which wrapped up its second season Monday night. While the series never leaned too heavily on its characters’ Asian roots, it didn’t ignore them either. This season sprinkled in a Chinese New Year celebration, a dumpling-making bonding session, and a significant use of the yin-yang symbol.
But at heart, “Andi Mack” is the coming-of-age story of bubbly teenager Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) who just wants to make art, hang with her friends, and see her single parents marry each other. Season 1 was concerned with her adjusting to big revelations — the people she thought were her parents are really her grandparents, and her cool older sister Bex (Lilan Bowden) is actually her mom — while this season deepened that mother-daughter bond to a “Gilmore Girls” level.

“Andi Mack” has won the inaugural GLAAD Media Award for outstanding kids and family programming, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Our teen girl characters, Andi and Buffy, are on a journey to figuring out who they are, and I decided that Cyrus should go on that kind of journey too,” “Andi Mack” creator Terri Minsky said in an exclusive statement for Variety. “His starts with a couple of friends who make him feel safe — they don’t judge him, they protect him. Unlike when my generation was growing up, kids today are lucky to live at a time when the world is more accepting — more and more people don’t feel the need to hide who they are. That’s what we all need, no matter who we are — people who love us, and in the case of Cyrus, people who love him before he even fully loves himself. I know...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Andi Mack” episode “Cyrus’ Bash Mitzvah.”]
With an exuberant title like “Cyrus’ Bash Mitzvah!” Friday’s one-hour episode of “Andi Mack” lived up to the hype. The celebration held to observe Cyrus Goodman (Joshua Rush) becoming a man was as over-the-top as one would hope for the theatrical teenager. The “bash mitzvah” had it all: carnival games, a killer dance tribute, an enigmatic fortune teller, a caricaturist, something ridiculous called bungee racing, and a few unexpected revelations.
In the episode, the party serves as the backdrop for each of the characters to come to terms with some news, with varying results. Perhaps the most surprising reaction of all comes from Jonah Beck (Asher Angel), the perpetually cheerful Ultimate team captain who had been maybe dating (but let’s not put a label on it) the series’ protagonist, Andi Mack (Peyton Elizabeth Lee). Frustrated with existing in a dating limbo, Andi breaks off their strange semi-romantic relationship.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Fresh Off the Boat” Season 4, Episode 10, “Do You Hear What I Hear?,” the first season of Netflix’s “One Day at a Time” and Season 2 of Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack.”]
“What up, girl. You gay?
You play any instruments?
Holla back at me.”
That eloquent haiku, scrawled on a coffee cup, is one of the first, albeit clumsy, attempts by “Fresh Off the Boat” character Nicole (Luna Blaise) to figure out what it means to live as a gay individual. Coming out has been an incremental process for her this season, and in Tuesday’s episode, she’s taking the next step. After developing a crush on a local barista at HotJava, Nicole considers communicating in poetry via paper cup to determine if the feeling is mutual.
Mainstream TV has come a long way since Ellen DeGeneres’ character came out on her self-titled sitcom 20 years ago. And these days, shows like ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat,” Netflix’s “One Day at a Time,” and Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack” have put youth coming-out stories at the front and center.

Disney Channel‘s Joshua Rush is breaking barriers by playing the network’s first openly gay character in the hit show Andi Mack.
“It’s important that everybody gets representation and that anybody having thoughts on who they are is able to see that represented on TV and to be shown that’s okay,” Rush, 15, exclusively tells People in this week’s issue. “I think Cyrus feels different, and I think in our teenage years we all feel different at different times, so it’s important to show anyone that Cyrus is comfortable with who he is and is happy with who he is.

Andi Mack made Disney Channel history last week. The charming, coming-of-age series, which centers on the 13-year-old titular character (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her interactions with her family and group of friends, became the first series in the network's storied history to introduce a central Lgbt storyline when Andi's friend Cyrus (played by Joshua Rush) realized he had feelings for a male classmate and shared those feelings with his Bff Buffy (Sofia Wylie). The scene between Cyrus and Buffy, which creator Terri Minsky and the network worked on with child development experts and screened for organizations such as GLAAD and Pflag, was tender and stirring, a moment that no doubt made a lot of...
