Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer) is on the run from a serial killer (David G.B. Brown). I say run, I mean swim. She was drugged, dressed in scuba gear and then plunged in to the depths of a nearby frozen lake to drown. Unfortunately for the killer however, Rachel is something of a seasoned diver and won’t go down (or should that be sank?) without a fight. With her killer stalking her on the surface, Rachel must not only constantly outwit him, but also survive the freezing temperatures as well as literally keeping a float.

The premise that director Douglas Schulze and co-writer Jonathan D’Ambrosio have cooked up for their film The Dark Below is a bold one. This 75-minute thriller is dialogue-free, save one line at the start setting everything in motion, the story instead unfolding as a series of expressions through current duress and visually informative flashbacks while David Bateman‘s energetic score blasts you into the correct state of unease. Performances must be a bit over-the-top, with sight and sound bordering on manipulative, in order for it all to work, but we hope the result will be good enough to forgive any moments where these inevitabilities go awry. And for a time it is, our intrigue at what’s happening initially getting the better of disbelief. Sadly, that time is too short.
Kudos to the filmmakers for throwing us into the fire with frame one, though. I was genuinely interested because...

Pedestrian execution undercuts the high concept of Douglas Schulze's near-silent horror film about a young woman trapped in a freezing lake by a determined killer. While its intriguing setup sounds like it could make for a provocative and original thriller, The Dark Below never lives up to its promise, although it earns points for originality.
The story begins with Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer) — at least that's her name as provided in the credits — being attacked by a burly man (David G.B. Brown) who strangles her, forces a drug down her throat and puts her in a wet suit....

Since I’m not much of a winter guy, any horror movie involving copious amounts of ice and freezing temperatures sounds like a terrifying time, and that’s before any crazed Yetis or other murderous demons threaten to turn the pure, white snow a deeper shade of red. Add into that scenario the thought of being trapped underwater, which happens to be my biggest fear, and you’ve stumbled into one of my recurring nightmares – a nightmare that director Doug Schulze is bringing to life in his next film, The Dark Below.
According to the very first press release, The Dark Below is a chilly, submerged “survival thriller set mostly beneath a frozen lake as a diver tries to stay alive while a killer lurks above.” Starring Veronica Cartwright (Alien, Witches of Eastwick) and Lauren Shafer (Mimesis), the film was shot in the dead of winter at Michigan’s Great Lakes,...

While Douglas Schulze is working on a sequel to Mimesis, we’ve heard that he has an additional project in the works that will begin production later this month. Titled “The Dark Below,” this movie is billed as an “experimental thriller” with a storyline that is being kept a secret.
What we do know is that the movie takes place on Lake Michigan and a majority of it will occur underwater. Production starts at the end of February, although filming will span the entire year in phases due to weather requirements. The film is being shot on the Red Epic and will utilize special underwater camera rigging for photography.
The cast is still being assembled, but the first person to officially join is Lauren Shafer (Mimesis). Douglas Schulze will direct from a script he co-wrote with Jonathan D’Ambrosio. Ambrosio will produce along with former Sony pictures VP Kathryn McDermott (Spider-Man,...

*there are spoilers here. Director: Douglas Schulze. Writers: Douglas Schulze and Joshua Wagner. Cast: Allen Maldonado, Sid Haig, Lauren Mae Shafer, Courtney Gains, Taylor Piedmonte, David G.B. Brown, Jana Thompson, and Gavin Grazer. Douglas Schulze's (Hellmaster) latest horror feature is titled Mimesis. Mimesis simply means imitation. In this film, Mimesis is defined as life imitating art. Schulze manages to introduce a social message amongst all of the cannibalism, eye gougings and pitchfork murders. This message involves media and its portrayal of violence and its relation to real life violence. This message is certainly relevant now, but Mimesis is also an entertaining outing. The film is clever and the conflict is well written and well disguised. The film's story initially follows Duane (Allen Maldonado) and Russell (Taylor Piedmonte). These two are friends and they head off to a horror convention. Here, they meet the raccoon eyed Judith (Lauren Mae Shafer), who.

Looks like zombies have become the next big thing (which means vampires are so five minutes ago). The first ever Detroit Independent Film Festival has given its Best Documentary award — to a film produced outside of Michigan — Eddies: The Documentary by Calgary filmmaker Michael Peterson. Eddies chronicles the journey of several Canadian filmmakers as they compete in the Big Rock Brewery’s annual filmmaking competition, which is an event relatively unknown outside of Calgary, but is a prodigious affair in the region.
As of this writing, I haven’t posted my review of Eddies on Bad Lit yet, but I’ve seen it and it’s a really wonderful documentary about everyday, creative folks really getting into the spirit of filmmaking — even for what are just essentially short beer commercials. I’ve previously reviewed three short fictional films by Peterson, who’s a great talent out of Canada.
