John Landgraf, the chairman of FX, says he canceled “Y: The Last Man” after just one season because “its audience decline was really, really, really steep.”
“One of the key things we assess — and we have assessed for as long as we’ve been doing this — is the trajectory of a television show across a season from its first to its last episode,” Landgraf said of the one-and-done FX on Hulu series.
“I really loved ‘Y: The Last Man’ personally…but I will tell you that its audience decline was really, really, really steep,” he added. “And ultimately that’s what made us go that direction.”
TheWrap reached out to FX to request a look at those audience declines, but we did not immediately hear back. The show only streamed on Hulu, which makes viewership numbers harder to come by.

“Y: The Last Man” has been canceled by FX, weeks before its first season debuts its final episode on FX on Hulu.
The news was shared by “Y: The Last Man” showrunner Eliza Clark through her Twitter on Sunday. In her post, Clark thanks FX and the show’s creative team for their partnership on the project. She also expresses hope that “Y: The Last Man” will be able to continue its run at a different network.
“We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of ‘Y: The Last Man.’ I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell,” Clark wrote. “‘We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production… It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling and beautiful thing...

Everyone has their part to play in the apocalypse. Some will be leaders. Some will be thinkers. Some will be helpers.
Y: The Last Man Season 1 Episode 5 brings some new players into the narrative -- some that will help the cause and some that may hinder it.
There is so much at stake.
When Agent 355 and Yorick arrive in Boston, they witness a military occupation keeping a tenuous grasp on the city. Graffiti and revolutionary posters are everywhere -- branding Jennifer Brown a liar, the perpetrator of a vast conspiracy in a bid for power.
Yorick is disturbed by what's he sees, scared of the protestors and the web of theories they have produced.
When he meets them, however, he finds them kind and helpful. He is beginning to come to the realization that the government -- and his mother -- may not have the best interest of the people at heart.

FX’s adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s popular comic book series “Y: The Last Man” has been in development since 2015, shuffling through multiple changes behind-the-scenes along the way.
When the show finally does premiere on Monday on Hulu, it will be nearly 20 years since the first issue of the post-apocalyptic drama hit shelves. Among the biggest departures the TV series makes from the source material is from the premise laid out in the title.
“I think that the conversation about gender is more nuanced than the conversation than anything was about gender 20 years ago,” showrunner Eliza Clark told TheWrap. “I think we made clear early and often in the show that chromosomes are not equal to gender, and that there are still many men that survived this event.”
In the original comic, which ran from 2002 until 2008, the premise is that every animal with a Y chromosome...

It’s no secret that Y: The Last Man took its sweet time in getting adapted. The story, first told in comic format from 2002 through 2008 by writer Brian K. Vaughan and illustrator Pia Guerra, was optioned to become a film as far back as 2007 with David Goyer producing.
The film project eventually developed into a TV pilot at FX in 2015. The show then ran into behind the scenes issues cycling through several producers and lead actors before settling upon Eliza Clark as showrunner and Ben Schnetzer as protagonist Yorick Brown. Now the sci-fi story about a virus that wipes out every man on Earth save for Yorick and his capuchin monkey Ampersand is finally seeing the light of day via FX on Hulu…amid a pandemic, no less!
Given that the comic series (of which 60 issues were published) debuted nearly 20 years ago, it’s reasonable to wonder if its premise...

FX’s “Y: The Last Man” is set in a world where a cataclysmic event has decimated “every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey.” Though this means that people who were assigned the male gender at birth, but identify as women are killed as a result of this tragedy, the showrunner of the series, which is based on the fan-favorite comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, says “Y: The Last Man” is a project “that affirms that trans women are women, trans men are men, non-binary people are non-binary.”
“What was exciting about the book was it takes this kind of idea that a world that is filled with mostly women — and the book is definitely sort of more skewed toward the idea of a world of women — that it’s not necessarily just a paradise because women uphold systems of oppression,...

Timothy Hutton is no longer a part of the cast on FX’s long-gestating “Y: The Last Man,” the network confirmed on Wednesday.
Hutton’s exit comes as several cast members have been swapped now that the show is entering production. Olivia Thirlby has replaced Imogen Poots as Hero Brown, while Ashley Romans takes over the role of Agent 355 from Lashana Lynch.
Originally announced as a regular cast member, Hutton had been hired to play the President of the United States. Now, Paul Gross (“Due South”) has taken over the role, but it’s no longer as a series regular. (UPDATED: Variety has since learned that Hutton was only hired to star in the pilot, and that his character wasn’t expected to continue after that. In the “Y: The Last Man” graphic novel, the President dies early on.)
But Hutton’s departure also comes following a report, posted online in March by BuzzFeed News, that revealed a criminal complaint against the actor that had been filed with the Vancouver Police Department. In the report, Sera Johnston told the site that she was raped and assaulted by both Hutton...

Production has started in Toronto on Y: The Last Man, the upcoming Diane Lane-starring FX on Hulu drama series based on the Eisner Award-winning DC Comics series.
There are two new cast changes on the project as Ashley Romans and Olivia Thirlby have joined the series, replacing originally cast Lashana Lynch and Imogen Poots, respectively. Romans will play Agent 355; Thirlby will play Hero Brown. In February, Ben Schnetzer was cast as the male lead Yorick Brown, replacing Barry Keoghan who had exited the projects. Also no longer part of the series is Timothy Hutton, who played the U.S. President in the original pilot. That part is believed to have been reworked as part of many creative changes on the show. Hutton also was replaced on the upcoming Leverage reboot after he faced sexual assault allegations in March.

Back in my video shop days (I have mentioned that before right?) I used to love finding hidden gems. You know, the movies that you never saw a trailer for, never saw them near the cinema they just kind of arrived in your local video shop and you were immediately drawn to them. Some examples off the top of my head could be the likes of Mean Creek, Donnie Darko, Napolean Dynamite, Bubba Ho Tep or any number of others. The thing that always got me into them was the unassuming box cover and that one actor that made you go “Oooooh I like him”.
Entanglement struck me as one of those movies that, while looking hugely unassuming, was going to surprise the crap out of me.

We’ve all asked the question: “What does our life mean?” Some of us do so out of curiosity, some out of boredom, and others from a place of desperation. Ben Layten (Thomas Middleditch) falls in the latter category after the wife he loved so deeply for many years leaves him for another man. He literally cannot cope with this turn of events, a long-standing bout with psychological issues and medications exacerbating any hope to find calm. So he does the unthinkable and resorts to suicide — multiple times. You could say the comical montage showing these attempts at the beginning of Jason James’ Entanglement is in somewhat poor taste, but the sense of exasperation with every near-miss failure is important. Something bigger than himself is deliberately leading him through.
Screenwriter Jason Filiatrault thankfully isn’t interested in making this “bigger thing” into God. It’s not even really a sense...

Entanglement is the type of movie that is so determined to convince you that it is a bad movie that it almost becomes one and then doesn’t. The first and second acts are somewhat insufferable the first time around, to be honest, a weird amalgamation of extreme dark humor and twee romance…but then the movie changes and becomes quite a bit different. That change would constitute a spoiler, so nothing about it will be mentioned here, but thankfully said change turns into something of a sad exploration of idealism.
Entanglement starts with Ben (Thomas Middleditch) attempting to kill himself. Following his failure to do so he finds himself despondent, only talking to his next-door neighbor, Tabby (Diana Bang) and suddenly finding the girl of his dreams Hanna (Jess Weixler), who may be his long-lost almost adopted sister.
With this original premise, Entanglement runs circles...

The story follows Middleditch as Ben, a man who accidentally falls in love with a girl who was very nearly, almost his sister while recovering from a suicide attempt. Then things get weird. The full cast includes Diana Bang, Randal Edwards, Marilyn Norry, Eric Keenleyside, and Nicole Laplaca. This looks like one of those ideally quintessential indie films with all the right romantic touches and existential questions, and I want to see it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason James' Entanglement, direct from YouTube: While searching for the meaning of his existence,...

The Interview will be the answer to questions in pub quizzes for years to come. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s second directorial feature is headline news all over the world and many in Hollywood have claimed that its release is a victory for our right to free speech. It is also a film which features Seth Rogen having to hide a package from the CIA in his ass. The Interview is that increasingly rare film which manages to provoke discussions in mainstream pop-culture but little, if any, of that discussion is focused on the film itself but should it be forgotten amid the controversy surrounding it, this would be a shame as The Interview is one of the funniest films of the year with...

Long before it sparked an international incident, all The Interview wanted to do was make people laugh. Of course, the scandal it provoked overshadowed the film itself somewhat, leading to debate around much bigger issues such as censorship of art, cyber-privacy and why exactly Hollywood is still bankrolling Adam Sandler.
The Interview quietly slips into UK cinemas this weekend (it's already been widely circulated online and available on Us Netflix), and now that the dust has settled it's easier to judge the film without the distraction of the baggage it carries.
Unfortunately, this is a largely forgettable affair, lacking the laughs of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's apocalyptic comedy This Is The End or any kind of smart satirical edge. Matt Stone...

The Interview is a movie doomed to collapse under the weight of all the external nonsense forced upon it. It is not a movie worth being called an act of war. It is not a movie worthy of being the standard bearer for free speech against real or imagined tyranny. It’s not a movie worth the total public embarrassment of Sony Pictures. It’s just a stupid comedy. I don’t even mean “stupid” pejoratively here, it is in the same grand tradition of stupid comedies that has brought us movies like There’s Something About Mary and Caddyshack. Both movies I like a great deal, neither of them worth an international incident.
When it’s on, The Interview is quite funny. The bit with Eminem that I saw all over Facebook this weekend is my favorite so it’s a shame that that’s in the first ten minutes of the film.

‘Tis the season for awards, and while voters are busy weighing the merits of top Oscar contenders, the industry’s intangibles have fallen by the wayside. The year in film is comprised of so many movie moments and overlooked details that go unrecognized by Hollywood, so here’s a list of superlatives and unconventional awards that serve as an alternative to the prim-and-proper Oscars. There’s even more ground to cover than last year, so let’s get started …

It was no more than a week ago when I advised my own mother to stay away from movie theaters on Christmas, breaking years of Jewish tradition. Could you really blame me? A group of hostile hackers had threatened “9/11-style” attacks against theaters that dared to show “The Interview,” a political comedy that the media has transformed from a mere movie into a movement.
While many initially questioned the credibility of these threats, I can’t say I was among them. “Why take a chance?” I asked myself. Who knows what the so-called Guardians of Peace are capable of? However,...

Updated: “We want to thank Amy Pascal for having the balls to make this movie,” said Seth Rogen Thursday night at the subdued world premiere of The Interview, the Sony Pictures comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. The film is the one most closely associated with the company’s hack attack, so consider it a small victory that in a week of extreme tumult for Sony, the December 25 comedy played well as storm clouds gathered ominously outside.
There were obvious signs of beefed-up security tonight: A dozen uniformed Lapd officers stood watch outside downtown’s Ace Hotel theater, and seven private security guards stood shoulder to shoulder at the box office. The very controlled atmosphere outside the venue featured only a small photographers’ corral, and a restricted-access red carpet and pre-screening reception was held inside (no big studio after party tonight). And it went off without a hitch.

It may not have the Red Band madness of the previous promo, but this new UK trailer for The Interview, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, does at least feature a puppy and Rogen being menaced by a tiger. So, there’s that. Franco is Dave Skylark, the none-too-bright but very popular host of celebrity tabloid TV show Skylark Tonight. When he and producer/best pal Aaron Rapoport learn that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a huge fan of their work, they manage to land an interview with the tyrant, seeing it as their chance to establish themselves as legitimate journalists. But with their travel to Pyongyang booked, the CIA decides that Dave and Aaron are the best shot they have at assassinating Kim, and set about finding a way for the two least qualified men imaginable to off a world leader. Naturally, things do not go quite to plan.

Imagine you’re tasked with killing North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un by the CIA, only to fly to the rogue nation and discover that the Dear Leader is a friendly, Katy Perry-loving guy with a softness for adorable puppies. Who could kill a dude like that? Such is the improbable dilemma faced by James Franco’s airhead talk show host and his only slightly more level-headed producer (Seth Rogen) in The Interview.
Of course, all the mayhem is underscored by the same raunchy humor that has marked Franco and Rogen’s previous big-screen misadventures (including Pineapple Express and This is the End). The final trailer for The Interview, which you can check out above, looks to be a seriously funny treat for moviegoers this holiday season (and certainly a solid alternative to the glut of Oscar contenders arriving around the same time).

When they discover that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists.
