When guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro hit the road for the first time as a member of Neil Young and Crazy Horse in November 1975, one of his first gigs took place at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California. The nightclub is a short drive from Young’s Broken Arrow ranch and it holds just about 800 people, making it a perfect spot for the group to try out new material in front of a friendly, hometown crowd, and they returned again in 1976, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 1997.

Neil Young is still months away from releasing Homegrown — the legendary lost LP he shelved in 1975 and recently decided to resurrect — but he’s already plotting out his next archival releases. The newest one to enter the picture is a hodgepodge of work he recorded with Crazy Horse in 1986 and a short-lived band he assembled for a 1989 Saturday Night Live appearance. He’s calling it Road of Plenty and is eyeing 2021 release.

In 1986, relations between Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were at an all-time low. The Stones were on hold while Jagger toured as a solo act behind his 1987 album Primitive Cool, and the two traded endless insults in the press.
So Keith Richards decided to do something he’d always held off on: form his own solo band. The X-Pensive Winos featured an eclectic crew including Waddy Wachtel (Warren Zevon, the Everly Brothers), drummer Steve Jordan (who played with Richards in the Chuck Berry tribute concert film Hail!
