Family, friends and former co-stars of Adan Canto took to social media on Tuesday to remember the actor following news that The Cleaning Lady and Designated Survivor star died of cancer at age 42.
“Forever my treasure Adan, see you soon,” Stephanie Canto, Adan’s wife, wrote on Instagram. She paired the message with a passage from Matthew 6:19-21 and a photo of the couple together.
Canto died Tuesday of appendiceal cancer, his rep told The Hollywood Reporter. His diagnosis had not been made public.
“Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever,” read a statement. “He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Along with his wife, he is survived by their two children, Roman Alder, 3, and Eve Josephine, 1.
Canto was known by many as Aaron Shore on Netflix’s Designated Survivor, the White House Chief of Staff-turned-Vice President to Kiefer Sutherland’s Tom Kirkman.

When Élodie Yung signed on to The Cleaning Lady, she relished the opportunity to play a character of many layers—a Cambodian immigrant coming from the Philippines to America who meets “extreme situations” with remarkable resilience, and will do whatever it takes to protect her son.
“My dad came from another country and had to make his own place in France, so I could very much relate to that. I was so glad I could be seen for the first time for really who I am as a whole person, with my origins, my background, and also just what I could bring as an actor,” she said today during a Fox TCA panel, which saw a first trailer for the series unveiled. “It was such a strong part, and draining, but beautiful to have.”

Cuba is a really interesting place. I’ve actually been there, though only for a day, back a few years ago before the U.S. government again made it difficult to travel to the island. I only mention this to bring up the potential inherent in setting a story even partially in that country. The Cuban, opening today, opts to do just such a thing, though is unable to fully build upon the premise and the promise of that element, especially when it goes so far as to actually shoot in Havana (more on that in a bit). Despite a touching turn from Louis Gossett Jr. and some charming emotions, the final product sadly leaves you wanting more. The movie is a drama about an unexpected friendship that develops in a nursing home. When naive pre-med student Mina (Ana Golja) gets her first job, it’s in a nursing home, which...

There are several very mildly cautionary notes sounded in Sergio Navarretta’s “The Cuban,” . There’s the gentle exhortation not to follow someone else’s dream at the expense of your own. There’s a subtle finger-wag at ageism, at the assumption that because someone is elderly or infirm they have nothing left to give the world. And there’s a whole lot about the healing power of music. But the real learning here ought to be that if you cast two such charismatic performers as Louis Gossett Jr. and Shohreh Aghdashloo in your movie, it would be better to clear all the Life Lesson clutter away and just let them get on with it.
Gossett plays Luis Garcia, a heavily medicated Alzheimer’s patient in a care home where he spends most of his time staring into the middle distance in his room — institutionally tidy except for a poster...

"We teach people how to love." Brainstorm Media has released the first official trailer for The Cuban, a heartwarming indie drama from Canadian-Italian filmmaker Sergio Navarretta. This first premiered at the Whistler Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Sonoma Film Festival earlier this year. Ana Golja plays a naïve pre-med student who lands her first job working in a nursing home. An unexpected friendship with Luis, an elderly Cuban musician there, reignites her love of music and changes her life forever. Starring the tremendously wonderful Louis Gossett Jr. (last seen on HBO's "Watchmen") as the Cuban musician Luis. With a cast including Shohreh Aghdashloo, Lauren Holly, Shiva Negar, Jonathan Keltz, and Giacomo Gianniotti. This looks like it's an emotional, energizing film about the amazing power of music. When Refinery29 premiered its Shatterbox Anthology in August of 2016, the new program was anchored by a forward-thinking concept: to “create short films that redefine identity, imagination, and storytelling through the female lens.” In their first “season,” they made a dozen films with a dozen female directors. Now, they’ve unveiled their second series of short films from female directors, including new offerings from Yara Shahidi, Gillian Jacobs, Jessica Sanders, A.M. Lukas (aka Anna Martemucci), Allana Harkin, Gilly Barnes, Ivy Agregan, and Janine Sherman Barrois.
Alongside partner TNT, the second season of Shatterbox (as its known these days) kicked off with a Tiff screening earlier this month, but the full series is already available online for interested viewers. This second season consists of 8 wide-ranging short-form films helmed by female directors, from a new take on “The Red Balloon” to a timely story about immigration and even a wild digital tale about viruses gone crazy.

2017-09-18T06:59:01-07:00Audiences Hate Jennifer Lawrence's New Movie
There was some hope that Jennifer Lawrence's new movie, Mother!, would do as well at the box office as many recent hit horror movies. Those hopes were quickly dashed when reactions from audiences in the movie's opening weekend indicated that viewers thought the film was one of the worst ever.
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
Darren Aronofsky's mother! stalled in its domestic box-office debut, grossing an estimated $7.5 million from 2,368 theaters after receiving a rare F CinemaScore and facing competition from the blockbuster It.

The Paramount title, which costed $30 million to produce, came in No. 3 over the weekend behind It and new offering American Assassin. (In a sign that summer is over,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… It’s tormented hotheads all around with a hero and villain who are almost indistinguishable and same-old spy stuff racing to a seen-it, been-there ticking-clock finale. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good action movie
I’m “biast” (con): this looked really familiar
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Lordy, save us from young hothead dudes who disobey every order yet save the day, leaving their older, wiser, and more experienced superiors in awe. Let’s not encourage this. Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien: Deepwater Horizon, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) — why not just call him Lank Squarejaw? — is “the best I’ve ever seen” whose test scores are “off the charts” and “through the roof.” He’s got “talent and balls”! He’s got a dead blonde fiancée killed by terrorists — let’s...

Hollywood has fallen in love with numerous spy superstars throughout its history. James Bond, Jason Bourne, and even Ethan Hunt are all memorable spy heroes with long-running franchises. There is something exciting about being a part of the spy world. Whether it’s the gathering of intel, the thrilling car chases, attractive romantic interests, or the prevention of some terrorist threat, the spy genre is a fruitful one. And Hollywood sure has picked from that tree over the decades.
The latest attempt of turning out a spy franchise comes in the adaptation of the Mitch Rapp book series. The popular book series started in 1999 and features twelve books, and its first film adaptation, American Assassin, is the eleventh book in the series. The film was originally supposed to star an older Mitch Rapp (Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell, and Matthew Fox were all considered for the role at one point), but...

Chicago – There was another mass shooting (eight dead) in Texas this week, but it was underreported because it didn’t involve “undesirables” and just seemed like another week in America. This blithe attitude towards guns, gunplay and violence continues in the movies, this week with the overindulgent release “American Assassin.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Based on the popular best seller by Vince Flynn, “American Assassin” is a boilerplate America-Saves-the-World story, made more palatable as a pretty decent action film and the presence of Michael Keaton (as the tough-but-benign special ops trainer). It was directed by Michael Cuesta, a veteran of TV’s “Homeland,” but adapted by four writers, a sign of story killing. It is naive in its geopolitics, preferring to filter it through a bent-on-revenge ex-cia American than to make a statement about enemies. But there is still enough “undesirables” to fill the coffins. As the body count increases, it’s a...

2017-09-14T11:44:32-07:00'It' Faces Some Real Competition This Weekend
Stephen King's It dominated the box office last weekend, breaking multiple records with its phenomenal ticket sales. This week, however, it faces some gritty, scary competition in Jennifer Lawrence's Mother! and Dylan O'Brien's American Assassin. Can the scary clown from Maine scare up another winning weekend?
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
The film adaptation of Stephen King's novel is expected to win the weekend with $50 million-plus after scaring up a record-shattering $123.4 million debut last weekend. The horror film, from Warner Bros. and New Line, has become a water-cooler sensation, amassing nearly $145 million in its first six days.
It, which cost $35 million to make, is well on its way to earning north of $300 million domestically and becoming one of the top-grossing horror films of all time, even when adjusting for inflation.

In “American Assassin,” the violence is surprising and brutal. However, its impact is stymied by a predictable script and action sequences that feel like a watered-down version of “John Wick.” And while Dylan O’Brien is a compelling and charming lead, and Michael Keaton unleashes a welcome degree of cantankerousness, this is one mission that should have been aborted.
Still, “American Assassin” kicks off with a bang that sets the tone for several more. While on vacation on the beach in Spain, Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) proposes to his girlfriend, Katrina (Charlotte Vega), recording the tender event on his smart phone, unaware of the bloodshed that’s about to break out around them. Viewers, however, will be one step ahead of them — thanks in part to the cheesy setup, and to the film’s telling tagline: “Assassins aren’t born, they’re made.”

It comes to something when you’re so lily-livered that gunshot makes you jump even after you’re told that it’s coming. Actor Dylan O'Brien is on set, holding a machine gun in a darkened tunnel. Illuminated by diffuse light from above, he looks lean and bestubbled, his firearm pointed straight towards the camera.

In case you hadn’t seen enough of Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming check out the brand new trailer for American Assassin in which he may come to regret training Dylan O’Brien just a bit too well.
Related: American Assassin Trailer 1
The brand new trailer, whilst covering footage we have seen before, gives us a new insight of Mitch’s deadly mission to find and take out the mysterious operative that poses a major threat of causing another World War. From slick training manoeuvres from the depths of the forest to the hot, dusty exotic streets of the Middle East, Mitch disobeys orders to follow his gut that something isn’t quite right and takes matters into his own hands. We smell something a little fishy here.

"You want a killer? Here he is." Lionsgate UK has released another new full-length trailer for the action thriller titled American Assassin, adapted from Vince Flynn's novel of the same name. We've seen two full trailers for this already, but this new one packs in even more action and shows us a few extra scenes we haven't seen yet. The film is about Mitch Rapp, an "ordinary every day all-American athlete and scholar" recruited by the CIA, becoming one of the best assassins they've ever seen, but he gets into trouble on an assignment in Beirut. The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien plays Mitch, and the cast includes Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan, Scott Adkins, David Suchet, as well as Shiva Negar. They're really trying to sell this hard, and it looks okay. I'm mostly curious about the big wave - must be detonation? Here's the third...

There was lots of exciting and controversial movie news that dropped this week. Take a look at some of the highlights below!
Jurassic Park fans only have to wait exactly one year until the next installment in the revived franchise is released. On June 22nd, 2018, we're getting Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which will bring back new stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with that always familiar face, Jeff Goldblum. We still don't know too much about the sequel, but we can enjoy this ever-nostalgic teaser poster in the meantime.
Just a couple of days ago we learned that the Han Solo film lost its directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller due to creative differences, but the film wasn't an orphan for too long. Ron Howard's name was the first to be thrown around upon this news, and today it has been confirmed that he will indeed take over the project. It's a sensible move, as Howard has a longstanding relationship with Star Wars, as he was originally tipped to direct The Phantom Menace. The film starring Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo is slated for release on May 25th, 2018.
We have the new trailer for David Gordon Green's Stronger, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as one of the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing back in 2013. It's the true story of how Jeff Bauman (Gyllenhaal) helped the police track down the killers, while recovering from the trauma himself. Check out the trailer below!

Xavier Dolan and Jessica Chastain fans alike can rejoice, as we have our first teaser poster for his first English-language film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. The film tells the story of the written correspondence between a famous television star and a young actor, and the impact it had on both of their lives. It looks like Jessica Chastain's character is "up to no good" to quote Dolan, as she plays a sneaky journalist in the film. Check out the poster below!

This week, we heard that legendary method actor Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting. The There Will Be Blood star has three Oscars and an almost unparalleled filmography. He's widely considered one of our best actors of all time, which is why most have been devastated by this news. While we're hoping Daniel changes his mind at some point in the future, we can at least look forward to seeing him in what will apparently be his last role, as a fashion designer in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, due out later this year.
This week we got to feast our eyes on more footage from the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. If what you saw in the trailer blew your mind, there are even more visuals to marvel over in the video below. Blade Runner 2049 sees Ryan Gosling as a new blade runner named K who discovers a long-kept secret that could plunge society into chaos. This leads him to finding Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for almost thirty years. Check it out below!
We can't get over this photo sent out by Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Avengers: Infinity War, that has Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong and The Hulk sharing a meal. It also gives us a little glimpse at some new costumes, and is obviously getting us super pumped for the new film.

Thank You for Your Service debuted its first trailer and poster this week! Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay for American Sniper, makes his directorial debut with this one and also serves as its screenwriter. The movie gives an in-depth look at how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects American servicemen and women returning home from war. It stars Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Amy Schumer, and Joe Cole. This looks like a powerful movie and we expect some Oscar buzz around this one. Check out the trailer below and see Thank You for Your Service in Cineplex theatres on October 27th!
A new trailer and poster for American Assassin dropped and this looks like an unbelievable ride. This one follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). Deadpool 2 has an official release date of June 1st, 2018 and production officially began this week! Even though that's more than a year away we cannot be more pumped! Ryan Reynolds will return as everyone's favourite foul-mouthed anti-hero. The plot for this one is still under wraps but we do know that the story will involve Cable (son of the X-Men character Cyclops), played by Josh Brolin. David Leitch is set to direct; he also has Atomic Blonde hitting theatres this coming July. The original Deadpool was such a fun ride that the wait for Deadpool 2 is going to be looong... check out the teaser trailer for Deadpool 2 and a picture from the movie's set below!

A new trailer and poster for American Assassin dropped and this looks like an unbelievable ride. This one follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence, leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East. Check out the new trailer below and see American Assassin when it hits Cineplex theatres September 15th!

"This whole thing is just a means to an end for you, isn't it?" CBS Films + Lionsgate have released a new full-length trailer for an action thriller titled American Assassin, adapted from Vince Flynn's novel of the same name. The film tells the story of Mitch Rapp, an "ordinary every day all-American athlete and scholar" who's secretly recruited by the CIA after his girlfriend is killed. He becomes one of the best assassins they've ever seen, but gets into big trouble on an assignment in Beirut. The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien plays Mitch, and the rest of the cast includes Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan, Scott Adkins, David Suchet, and Shiva Negar. I'm curious about Kitsch as the bad guy and the big explosion at the end. Here's the new red band trailer (+ poster) for Michael Cuesta's American Assassin, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first teaser trailer for American Assassin here, to see even more ...

This American Assassin action thriller actually looks like it could be a great film that has potential to be a solid new franchise. We've got two new trailers for you to watch today for the movie, one of which is a red-band trailer. I really like what I'm seeing in these trailers and it doesn't hurt that the movie features a talented cast of actors.

Best-in-class counterterrorism agent Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) reports for duty in the gripping first red band trailer for American Assassin, Michael Cuesta’s (Kill the Messenger) sweeping franchise-starter that takes the espionage elements of Homeland and sprinkles a little of 24‘s signature action over the top for good measure.
The end result is a breathless teaser for CBS and Lionsgate’s American Assassin, which sees O’Brien’s hardened protagonist embark on a quest for a revenge after his significant other is murdered in cold blood while holidaying on some picturesque beach resort. It’s a terrorist act ripped straight from the headlines, and we’re intrigued to see how audiences react to Michael Cuesta’s unflinching adaptation in light of recent events.

The Mitch Rapp books are coming to the big screen - and American Assassin has landed an 18-rating in the UK.
Arriving in cinemas this autumn is American Assassin, the first big screen adaptation of the Mitch Rapp line of thrillers, written by the late Vince Flynn. The movie has cast Dylan O’Brien in the role of Rapp, and the cast for this one also includes Scott Adkins, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan and David Suchet. Michael Cuesta is directing.
It looks as if the film won't be pulling any punches, either. In a rare move, a big movie has earned an 18 certificate from the BBFC, in this case for its "strong sadistic and bloody violence". The BBFC also confirms that the final cut of the film is 112 minutes long.
Here's the latest international trailer for the film, that was released last month.

The new trailer for Michael Cuesta’s American Assassin which sees Dylan O’Brien as a fledgeling CIA recruit with Michael Keaton, a Cold War Veteran, as his instructor take the fight to stop a lone terrorist threat causing a world war in the Middle East has made an appearance.
Piecing together his memories of losing his parents at 14 O’Brien’s Mitch seems to have had a turbulent upbringing from being kicked out of boarding school and eventually landing on the doorstep of the CIA. The trailer, in which we see O’Brien, angry at the loss of his girlfriend to a terrorist attack on a beach just after proposing, take on the instruction of Keaton’s Stan Hurley at what can only be described at a deadly school for assassins after being sent there by the CIA.
