Comic readers are already familiar with the eye-popping, frenetic artwork of James Harren, but his newly announced project Ultramega is about to take everything fans love and make it … bigger.
Harren is known for collaborations with writer John Arcudi on Dark Horse Comics’ Bprd and Image Comics’ Rumble. This time out, he’s writing and drawing a series set in a world where a plague has hit the Earth, transforming those it infects into monstrous kaiju… with only three humans, each with incredible powers, standing between them and total destruction. But can the three, known as the Ultramega, turn back the cataclysmic tide ...

Dark Horse has announced Hellboy Universe: The Secret Histories, collecting three stories from "hidden corners of the Hellboy universe" in a brand new hardcover edition:
"Fans of the Hellboy universe know that Rasputin is the man responsible for bringing Hellboy to Earth, but when did the mad monk find his calling to bring about Ragna Rok? Following his iconic appearance in Hellboy: The Conqueror Worm, how did the mysterious Visitor stay hidden on Earth for so long? Where did the legendary Sledgehammer armor really come from? Hellboy Universe: The Secret Histories collects in hardcover for the first time three acclaimed stories that shed new light on the hidden corners of the Hellboy universe: Rasputin: The Voice of the Dragon, Sledgehammer 44, and The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed.

John Arcudi, the acclaimed writer of Bprd, The Mask, and a late 1990s run on DC’s Doom Patrol, is returning to Image Comics in early 2021 with a new horror series set during the American Civil War, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal.
Two Moons is named for its main character, a young Pawnee man known to some as Virgil Morris, who fights for the union during the Civil War — only to become confronted with something far more horrific than the combat he’s surrounded by. The series is illustrated by Marvel cover artist Valerio Giangiordano (Savage Avengers, Taskmaster).

When it comes to over-sized special edition comics, DC seemingly can’t wait to whip up a steady stream of one after another. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. These 80 Page Giants must be good-sellers for DC, and although nearly 10 dollars a go, they are good value for the reader. You get to see a whole load of creators jamming together on more characters than you can shake a stick at, and the odds are that you will enjoy the majority of the stories, if not all. DC do enjoy their themed specials as well, and I must admit to being a sucker for things like Halloween and Christmas specials down the years, and I’m no different now. This Special gives us 10 short and hopefully sweet peeks into the more mysterious corners of the DC Universe,...

Like the Norse mask at the bottom of the sea in the original film, The Mask franchise has been lying dormant for a long while. However, there’s suddenly been a lot of buzz about a potential new movie in the series, which is based on the Dark Horse comic book character, over the past few months. Jim Carrey famously brought green-faced hero Stanley Ipkiss to cartoonish life in 1994’s hit comedy, but would he be willing to star in a sequel?
Well, it seems the actor isn’t ruling it out, but he does have one key stipulation. While speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his role in Sonic the Hedgehog, Carrey was asked if he’d consider making a new Mask movie. The star revealed that he’d be open to it, although he’d need the involvement of a talented filmmaker with a bold vision to really...

Can you believe it? 25 years of Hellboy? The comic's first San Diego Comic-Con outing was in 1993 (the con at that time occurred between August 19th-22nd), and to celebrate, Dark Horse Comics is pulling out all the stops, as the company has revealed three new Hellboy titles: Hellboy Winter Special 2018, Crimson Lotus, and Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956:
Press Release: Milwaukie, Ore.,—In 1993, legendary comic book creator Mike Mignola’s most famous creation, Hellboy, first appeared in a four page, black and white story in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, months ahead of his full issue comic book debut in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Co-published by Dark Horse Comics, this story introduced one of the most beloved comic book characters in history and launched what would become known as the Mignolaverse — the strange, shared universe of comic books and graphic novels, comprised of acclaimed titles including Hellboy and the B.

So the big Hellboy story is over — it’s been over longer than most people think, as I argued when I wrote about the second volume of Hellboy in Hell. But Hellboy is still a valuable piece of intellectual property, with a potential movie reboot still kicking around in the background somewhere. So there has to be some Hellboy product coming out on a regular basis, to help keep the lights on at Dark Horse and to keep Mike Mignola busy.
Well, maybe that’s too cynical a view of things. Hellboy is an interesting, fun character, and his history contains vast swaths of space and time to throw additional stories into. It’s not impossible that Mignola and his collaborators are really, really enthusiastic about all of those possibilities and that Mignola is taking on such a large number of collaborators and doing a whole lot of unrelated one-off...

Early last week, white British actor Ed Skrein joined the cast of Neil Marshall’s upcoming “Hellboy” reboot, a casting choice that was immediately derided for its whitewashing of Skrein’s character, a Japanese-American Marine named Ben Daimio (whose family tree includes no less than a famous Japanese spy and war criminal, who also appears in the John Arcudi and Mike Mignola comic book series). In short order, Skrein did something wholly remarkable: he dropped out of the project after learning about Daimio’s heritage.

In an official statement, the actor made it clear that he believed the choice was what was “right,” noting that portraying the part in “a culturally accurate way” was clearly important for audiences (Skrein also pointed to his own “mixed heritage” family in the statement, which you can read here). Welcome to Showside #2 is another fun installment in writer/artist Ian McGinty’s bouncy, anything goes all ages urban fantasy saga. (The series has also spawned an animated pilot.) In this issue, readers get to meet Belle’s little brother Toulouse, who is a bit of a nerd and scared of their father Mr. Stone, an eyepatch wearing demon hunter, who hates monsters (even adorable ones like Kit and Boo) and lives in a castle above Showside. The comic starts as a fun beach excursion complete with rad banter, a food truck excursion, and standing up to an annoying bully, who looks like the steroid fueled offspring before turning into another magical monster brawl. And between the eating and fighting, McGinty continues to develop the world of Showside,...

Jim Carrey scored a huge hit with The Mask, yet the comic books leave the door open for more films. Here's why they could work...
In some ways, 1994's The Mask was ahead of its time. Sure, when we try to pick out the greatest comic-book adaptations today, we're spoilt for choice: with Marvel entering the third phase of their cinematic universe, transforming formerly obscure characters into mainstream icons, and DC's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice ready to kick their movies up into a higher gear, the list of adaptations looks set to grow and grow.
Still, movies based on comic books remain largely superhero-centric, which is a shame considering the huge range of fantastic titles out there deserving of a larger audience. Just over 20 years ago, particularly in the UK, comic books and their respective characters were generally seen as childish, goofy, for nerds only – and the lack...

With Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952, Mike Mignola set out to give a fresh start to everyone’s favorite nice guy demon. He’s been writing the character since the mid-90s, but still finding new a interesting ways to present the character and his world. As he did with Hellboy In Hell recently, Mignola places the titular character here in places not previously traversed and it is much appreciated.
Hellboy has always been, of course, inherently religious. There are no demons without angels, no Satan without God. And when one writes about a demon on Earth, the other stuff will always be there even if not explicitly referenced. 1952 doesn’t shine a light on the fires of...

Dark Horse, the elder statesman of independent comics, continues to show no signs of slowing down during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Even though Marvel now holds the rights to Star Wars, its biggest licensed comics property, Dark Horse struck back by announcing a several creator owned titles in different genres as well as an expansion to the Mignolaverse and a sequel to one of the most beloved novels of the past century. Dark Horse also won some Eisners in a wide variety of categories showing the company’s comics appeal to many types of readers from kids to people who wouldn’t normally read comics.

Even though Batman has gotten most of the publicity, another comics character is celebrating a big anniversary. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Hellboy’s first appearance in the Seed of Destruction miniseries by Mike Mignola and scripted by John Byrne.

Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #1

The Golden Age of Comics is a difficult time to revisit. Writers hazard coming off as kitschy or hackneyed even if they bottle some of the spirit. Along the lines of Indiana Jones, The Lobster thrives on nostalgia, invigorating classic tropes. Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #1 captures the spirit of the thirties without feeling contrived or irrelevant.
Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, which spawned the Lobster, has an ideal pallet for noir stories: dark shades and chunky inks render every page ominous. This story picks up with Harry, one of The Lobster’s team members, attending a professional wrestling match between the gigantic Russian Bear and diminutive Devil Dwarf, both of whom prove to be much more than entertainers. The plot thickens as the kingpin, Mr. Ward, and his henchman,...

To start this review off with a little bit of colour (ahem), I was going to add some background info on Batman: Black & White’s history. What it is and how it came to be, that sort of thing. However, I sincerely doubt that there is anyone reading this who doesn’t already know that stuff, so I’ll skip it and get straight to the review. If you are interested in learning more, then have a look Here. I’ll wait…

Like a lot of the Lobster Johnson stories, a grouping of essentially self-contained period stories from the Hellboy franchise, this book doesn’t have much going on beneath its surface, a thin membrane Old Hollywood throwbacks. A murder in Chinatown ostensibly kicks off events (slowly and without creating interest), a reporter investigates them while shadowed by a pair of detectives, and every character readily drops everything to make moves toward finding the culprit.
But this story is issue one of two, so the inevitable conclusion is stalled for another issue’s worth in dollars and a fair number of talking heads, heads Sebastián Fiumara is left with the unenviable work of drawing. There’s not much story to tell here,...

Beginning in September, DC Comics will roll out out the red carpet for the return of their critically acclaimed “Batman Black and White” series, where fans can look forward to six new issues in the collection. Originally published in 1996, DC’s Eisner-nominated “Black and White” anthology began as a four issue miniseries that went on to inspire a wide array of similarly-styled backup stories and a very successful line of high-end statues based on series’ artwork.
The original series featured several notable contributors that included Jim Lee, Bruce Timm, Joe Kubert, Neil Gaiman, Walter Simonson, Richard Corben, Kent Williams, Brian Bolland and many more. The upcoming mini-series will continue that tradition by bringing on such talents as Chip Kidd, Neal Adams, Sean Murphy, Chris Samnee, Michael Cho, Joe Quinones and more for the first issue set to arrive in September.

Man, Dark Horse Comics just won’t slow down. And why should they? In addition to several exciting Star Wars projects on their plate, the premiere indie publisher keeps introducing fantastic original work with a quirky bent: Matt Kindt’s Mind Mgmt, John Arcudi’s The Creep, Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra’s Colder (best mini-series of the year, if you ask me), Brian Wood’s The Massive, and a new Bprd: Vampire series reuniting Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, just to name a few. Here are three more recently announced projects that should stir feathers in the world of surreal horror.

Sledgehammer 44 # 1 Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi Art by Jason Latour Colors by Dave Stewart Cover by Mike Mignola Published by Dark Horse Comics
Comics fandom does seem to have taken quite readily to this whole auteurism thing, haven’t they? And very few creators have been as rabidly fetishised more than “Hellboy” creator and black ink enthusiast Mike Mignola, to the point that when he releases a new book, Dark Horse executives throw a party like Jesus just came back.
Well, the party must be in full swing, because the first issue of Mignola’s new (written, but not illustrated) two issue miniseries, “Sledgehammer 44” is out. But is it any good?
The story opens in WW2 and Christ alive, Mike, is it just me or are we a bit fixated on The Big One, here? Maybe I’m just making the common mistake of everything you’ve done...

B.P.R.D.: 1948 Issue #5 hits store shelves on February 20th, and artist Max Fiumara provided us with a few sketches and notes on his process of designing one of the comic's monsters, the iconic B.P.R.D. HQ, and more.
Click each of the below sketches to see them bigger and in more detail.
Design of the Roc:
I designed this monster bearing in mind that the scenes where it appears are in the plain desert of Utah during daytime, so I added that fur over the creature to somehow hide it and make it more mysterious in its definition.
Layouts, Pencils, and Inks of Pages 15, 16, and 17 of B.P.R.D.: 1948 Issue #1:
For Page 15, I had to design a variation of the establishing shot of the iconic B.P.R.D. HQ in Connecticut. The trick here was that I needed to show those gates out front,...

Dark Horse Comics has announced B.P.R.D.: 1948. John Arcudi will write the five-issue miniseries alongside artist Max Fiumara, continuing the story from the 1946 and 1947 miniseries. The story follows Trevor Bruttenholm and his team into New Mexico. "[B.P.R.D.: 1948] takes place at a military facility in the New Mexico desert during some rather unusual nuclear testing: the use of low-grade nuclear bombs to propel spacecraft," Arcudi told Comic Book Resources. "It's loosely based on the actual events surrounding Project Orion - perhaps as a result of these tests, Professor (more)...

DC Comics has announced that they will be canceling six titles from the ‘New 52′ lineup but will be adding six additional titles to keep the magic 52 number alive. The six titles that have landed on the chopping block include Men of War, Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C., Hawk and Dove, Blackhawks, and Static Shock, all of which have struggled terms of sales and quality when compared to the other titles in DC’s ‘New 52′.
Each of these series will wrap up their runs with the release of issue #8 and will then make room for the following six new titles to take their place.
Batman Incorporated – Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of Action Comics, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on Batman Incorporated, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat. The upcoming thriller Chronicle takes the form of a found-footage documentary, as three high school friends film themselves discovering something mysterious in the woods and then experimenting with newly discovered superpowers. Things begin fun and then turn apocalyptic — it’s vaguely reminiscent of John Arcudi’s A God Somewhere, if you’re a comics head. The full trailer just debuted, along with a clip. Check out both videos below. Start the debate: Will this be hugely successful and disappointing like Blair Witch Project, hugely successful and disappointing but secretly brilliant like Cloverfield, or so hugely successful that it leads to disappointing sequels like Paranormal Activity?...

At the time of this writing, there are currently 15 volumes of B.P.R.D. collections. I have never read one before, but I tackled B.P.R.D Hell on Earth: Gods and Monsters and found myself engrossed. It's a very complex and heart-pounding story that didn't need the other 15 volumes of back issues to keep me glued to the page. Mignola has a talent for making his books feel stand alone while still building upon all the things he's been doing in the past for the good readers that have been with him since day one.
This trade is divided into two sections, the Gods and the Monsters sections, of course. Each presents its own story that is connected to the other, but at first glance it doesn't seem so. With a script by Mignola and John Arcudi we get the story of how hell has quite literally been unleashed on earth.

If there is one thing that I'm learning very quickly about Mike Mignola it's that he really knows his genres. Not only does he know them well, but he knows how to mash them together. He makes it look so easy in comics, however, it is anything but I imagine. With the new graphic novel of Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder Volume 2 we get the melding of two very unlikely genres; the western and the Victorian detective.
Edward Grey is the Queen's official paranormal detective, and in this book he finds himself searching for a man out in the wild west. What he actually finds is something just as frightening as anything else he's encountered throughout his journeys.
With a script by Mignola and John Arcudi we get a different approach to a central facet of American culture. It has the same vibe and tropes of a western, but it...

What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.
