“The Beast,” starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay, has been picked up for domestic distribution by Sideshow and Janus Films, TheWrap has learned.
The romantic drama, based on Henry James’ novella ‘The Beast in the Jungle,’ will receive a theatrical release next year. It also co-stars Guslagie Malanda, Dasha Nekrasova, Martin Scali, Élina Löwensohn, Marta Hoskins, Julia Faure, Kester Lovelace, Félicien Pinot, and Laurent Lacote.
The film concerns a near future where artificial intelligence reigns and human emotions represent a threat to the ruling order. But she is overcome by fear, a premonition that catastrophe is on the way.
Sideshow and Janus Films commented: “Bertrand Bonello has made a bold, provocative and beautifully made film asking major questions about our humanity in the age of A.

The film is an adaptation of Henry James’ novella “The Beast in the Jungle.” It features a glossy cast that includes “No Time to Die” star Léa Seydoux and “1917” breakout George MacKay, along with Guslagie Malanda, Dasha Nekrasova, Martin Scali, Élina Löwensohn, Marta Hoskins, Julia Faure, Kester Lovelace, Félicien Pinot, and Laurent Lacote. The film is a Les Films du Bélier, My New Picture and Sons of Manual Production, and is produced by Justin Taurand and Bertrand Bonello.

One of the most buzzed-about international movies of the fall festival circuit, Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast,” has already lured several distributors ahead of its world premiere in competition at Venice.
Represented by Kinology, the dystopian romance is headlined by Léa Seydoux (“Crimes of the Future”) and George MacKay (“1917”) as star-crossed lovers.

Through the process, Gabrielle revisits past lives and immerses herself in buried memories from 1910 and 2014, where she reunites with Louis (MacKay), her great love. German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who was murdered in Auschwitz at age 26, and her autobiographical masterwork “Life? or Theatre?,” which was created in a two-year burst in the early 1940s, are the subjects of “Charlotte,” a unique animated biopic drama that marks a career turning point for Toronto producer Julia Rosenberg.
Rosenberg first encountered “Life? or Theatre?” — which comprises hundreds of gouache paintings, a 32,000-word journey-of-an-artist tale filled with dark family secrets and numerous text overlays and music cues — as a bat mitzvah gift. She soon developed “a very possessive personal relationship” with the book. “It’s the book I would buy and give when I fell in love,” she said.
After a decade racking up producer credits on notable Canadian dramatic and documentary features, Rosenberg decided one morning in 2012 that an animated film should be made of Salomon’s life, and set about harnessing her passion and wide network to make it so.

Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry, Isaiah Mustafa, and Beth Grant have all been cast in ABC’s multi-cam comedy pilot “Black Don’t Crack,” Variety has learned.

Campbell will play Tasha Marks, described as a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She’s achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she’s worked so hard to create.

More than a few festival-goers must have woken up in rough shape after last night’s long trip to the club with Abdellatif Kechiche, and to their credit, the Cannes Film Festival seems to have taken that into account.

Cannes–Variety honored its 10 Producers to Watch for 2019 at a brunch on Monday morning at Cannes’ Plage des Palmes.
Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998, the annual event fetes 10 producers from the U.S. and the international film community who share a common commitment to bold, original, provocative storytelling.
The films produced by this year’s honorees have premiered on the Croisette and made waves in Sundance and Berlin, tackling challenging themes while offering a platform for diverse cinematic voices. Collectively they represent a dynamic community that is going to “regenerate, rejuvenate, revitalize cinema moving forward,” said Variety’s executive VP of content Steven Gaydos.
Katriel Schory, who is stepping down from the Israel Film Fund, was also honored with Variety’s Creative Impact Award. Under Schory’s stewardship of the fund, more than 300 feature-length films were produced in Israel, while the domestic audience grew from 100,000 to 1.5 million admissions per year.

The current crop of acclaimed Quebec filmmakers shooting feature films south of the border speaks to an unprecedented infatuation on Hollywood’s part with French-Canadian directors.
Among the heavy hitters: Jean-Marc Vallée (“Wild,” “The Dallas Buyers Club,” HBO’s upcoming “Big Little Lies”), Philippe Falardeau (“The Bleeder,” “The Good Lie”), Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Sicario,” the forthcoming “Blade Runner” sequel), not to mention Xavier Dolan, who’s currently shooting his star-studded English-language debut, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.”
But there’s another remarkably prolific, genre-bending Montreal filmmaker – an award-winning festival regular who has clocked in nine features, one medium-length production and shorts to spare over the last decade – who’s never shown much enthusiasm about dipping his toes in the American studio system. No matter how many prizes or festival selections his films rack up (Berlin, Cannes, Locarno and Sundance among them) or how many retrospectives film societies program about his work,...

Seville International to begin sales on It’s Only the End of the World at Cannes; MK2 to handle in France.
Xavier Dolan is to begin filming It’s Only the End of the World (Juste la fin du monde) next month with a starry cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, Nathalie Baye, and Gaspard Ulliel.
It was anticipated that Dolan’s next feature would be The Death and Life of John F. Joining the ranks of filmmakers with insatiable appetites such as Michael Winterbottom, Francois Ozon and Woody Allen, Xavier Dolan doesn’t take too much down time between projects. Taking a note from fellow Quebecois filmmakers (Denis Villeneuve and Jean Marc Vallee) exploring the international stage, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan will not be Dolan’s next project (still pegged for a fall shoot), but instead, the recently named film jury member will extend his stay in France post Cannes Film Festival for what will be his first international film production. Seville International announced that all-stars Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, Gaspard Ulliel and Laurence Anyways‘ Nathalie Baye will star in Dolan’s sixth feature film, Juste la fin du Monde (It’s Only the End of the World) with production beginning next month. The Canada-France coproduction sees Mommy producer Nancy Grant produce via Sons of Manual...

Lea Seydoux, Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel, Nathalie Baye and Gaspard Ulliel are all set to star in MK2 and Telefilm Canada's "It's Only the End of the World," the sixth film from young Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan.
Based on a play of the same name by Jean-Luc Lagarce, the story follows a writer who goes back to his hometown when he plans to announce his upcoming death to his family. As resentment soon rewrites the course of the afternoon, all attempts of empathy are sabotaged by people's incapacity to listen and love.
Filming is slated to begin in late May and Dolan will shoot the project before he gets to work on his previously announced first Hollywood film "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan" starring Kit Harington and Susan Sarandon.
Dolan, coming off great praise for last year's Cannes entry "Mommy," has also directed the likes of "Tom at the Farm,...

Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

Canadian wunderkind director Xavier Dolan scored the Jury Prize in his first time in the main Cannes Competition earlier this year with Mommy. The film has now been selected to represent Canada in the Foreign Language Oscar race. While the last Canadian film to win an Oscar was 2003’s The Barbarian Invasions, the country has had a strong showing with four nominees since 2006. Mommy is 25-year-old Dolan’s fifth film as director and his second to rep Canada after his 2009 breakout I Killed My Mother. Produced by Nancy Grant, Mommy stars Anne Dorval, Antoine Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clément. It’s set in a fictional Canada, where a new law allows distressed parents to abandon troubled children to the hospital system. Séville International handled sales of the film which was acquired by Roadside Attractions domestically.
