You could call Dutch cop comedy Popoz a regional response to the Jump Street films and not be too far off, though I have a hunch you'd be selling it just a touch short by doing so. Directed by Martijn Smits and Erwin van den Eshof - the duo responsible for Dutch zombie comedy Zombibi - the feature is expanded out from the duo's Comedy Central television series of the same name which ran for a six episode series in 2013 with a standalone special following in 2014. Former New Kids and Bros Before Hos star Huub Smit takes one of the lead roles along with Sergio Hasselbaink and Noel Deelen in a cop comedy that tends towards the sort of broad, slapstick humor that...

The gang's not quite all here but fans of Dutch comedy group New Kids have reason to celebrate today as the first trailer for Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil's latest film, Bros Before Hos, has arrived and features their compatriots Tim Haars and Huub Smit in key roles. And while they may have put away the mullets for this one it's clear that the sense of humor hasn't changed a whole lot. No subtitles here but, honestly, given the title and the creators, do you really think you'll have a hard time figuring it out? Check it out below....

Are Dutch comedy troupe The New Kids growing up? Not bloody likely, frankly, but after a run on television followed by two hugely successful feature films they're moving on to some other things. and the big one at the moment is romantic comedy Bro's Before Ho's - written and directed by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil with Tim Haars and Huub Smit both in the cast. Now in production, we've got the first quartet of images from the film for your perusal in the gallery below. And while these seem to promise a bit of sweetness and light, let's not forget who we're dealing with. Hopefully a teaser will follow soon ......

The Norwegians may have landed at Fantastic Fest with world premieres of the television series Hellfjord and the documentary The Exorcist in the 21st Century, as well as the North American premiere of Øystein Karlsen's feature directorial debut Fuck Up, but it was the Dutch who left a lasting impression with their film offerings featured in this year's "No Clogs or Tulips" Dutch spotlight.
Several filmmakers and cast members of films premiering at this year's fest traveled to Austin from the Netherlands, including Fantastic Fest 2011 Best Director awardwinner Steffen Haars (New Kids Nitro) -- seen above second from left with director/writer Arne Toonen (Black Out), fellow New Kids Nitro cast members Wesley Van Gaalen and Huub Smit and writer/director Max Porcelijn (Plan C). The second wave of genre films slotted to play this year’s Fantastic Fest has been unleashed upon the masses. Among the the are two of the year’s most anticipated films, Looper and Sinister. Continue reading for the films announced and a brief plot synopsis of each… but, do so at your own risk! (The inconceivable awesomeness of Fantastic Fest may be too much for some to handle. Those unaccustomed to this level of awesomeness should refrain from indulging in such films without first consulting your physician to verify you are in fact an adult with adventurous taste and not still just a sniveling, winy brat.)

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. This will mark my 3rd year covering the festival and Michael’s 2nd year. The press release has been released on what will be playing at the festival and I think I can honestly say that the selection feels like it might top last year. We got some more hits off our picks of what we thought might play this year as well.

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.
See the lineup below:
