The BAFTA TV Awards winners have been announced, and it was a big night for Michaela Coel, whose BBC and HBO series I May Destroy You scooped two of the biggest prizes of the evening.
During a pre-recorded ceremony at London’s iconic Television Centre, Coel walked away with best leading actress for her performance as sexual assault survivor Arabella, while I May Destroy You also scooped best mini-series, beating Steve McQueen’s Small Axe.
It follows I May Destroy You’s strong showing last month at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards, which celebrates the work of those working behind the scenes. Coel scored a BAFTA mask for best drama writer and best director at the ceremony.
After winning leading actress on Sunday, Coel collected her award in-person and thanked intimacy coach Ita O’Brien. Coel said O’Brien’s presence meant she could make a series about “exploitation, loss of respect,...

Long-time Pulse Films executive Lucas Ochoa has left the “Gangs of London” producer to join “Normal People” outfit Element Pictures as an executive producer. Also joining the production company is Silverprint Pictures’ Michael Dawson (right).
Ochoa’s hire is a major coup for Element Pictures, and comes as a surprise given his years spent building Pulse Films alongside co-founder and creative partner Thomas Benski. Ochoa was most recently chief creative officer of Pulse’s scripted division, executive producing Sky Atlantic and AMC’s “Gangs of London.” He joined the company in 2008, just three years after it was founded by Benski and Marisa Clifford.

AMC will air British drama Gangs of London in the U.S. after HBO’s Cinemax dropped out of the project, which has been renewed for a second season.
The series, which was created by The Raid’s Gareth Evans, was originally commissioned by Sky and Cinemax in 2017, as revealed by Deadline. In the subsequent two and a half years, the U.S. pay-tv broadcaster moved out of originals and AMC has now taken the U.S. rights and will become a co-producer of the second season.
The ten-part show, which is produced by Pulse Films in association with Chernobyl producer Sister, was a bit hit for Sky in the UK – it was its biggest premiere streaming series this year and the biggest original drama launch on Sky Atlantic in the past five years.

Hit series “Gangs of London” is getting a new U.S. home.
The Gareth Evans-created series, which is produced by Pulse Films in association with Sister, will move from WarnerMedia-owned Cinemax to AMC ahead of its autumn debut. U.K. broadcaster Sky Atlantic will remain the European home for the show.
The first season already aired on Sky Atlantic — the home of many co-produced originals and U.S. shows on Comcast-backed pay-tv broadcaster Sky — back in April. Alongside the first season debut on AMC this fall, it will also air on Sky in Germany and Italy this summer.
The move is not altogether unexpected. Cinemax, sister network to HBO, revealed back in January that it was going to move out of the originals space, and that the brand would not be transferred over to the HBO Max platform. Variety understands Pulse Films received HBO and Cinemax’s...

London-based Pulse Films has built its business on a steady diet of slick rock docs by the likes of LCD Soundsystem and the Beastie Boys, music videos including Beyoncé’s transcendent “Lemonade” and Andrea Arnold’s feature film “American Honey.” As it readies for a transformative year, the Vice Media Group-backed outfit is rolling out its first major scripted series, Sky and Cinemax’s dizzyingly violent and stylish “Gangs of London.”
Pulse CEO Thomas Benski is as much a rock star as the veteran musicians he’s immortalized through his 16-year-old production company. The Brazil-born French executive, who works closely with creative partner and Pulse chief creative officer Lucas Ochoa, is synonymous with the edgy brand, whose early music docs have evolved into evocative non-scripted fare, including films on U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning (“Xy Chelsea”), nefarious hot yoga founder Bikram Choudhury (“Bikram”) and missing toddler Madeleine McCann.

“I mean, if you don’t like violence, it’s not going to be your cup of tea,” says co-executive producer and writer of Sky’s new drama Gangs Of London, Claire Wilson, talking to a room full of journalists at London’s Soho Hotel. It’s a singularly British understatement for a show that’s both rooted in the capital city but also brings together many multi-cultural facets with a flourish of ultra-violence that feels more like an international glossy noir than Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men.

The cult cinema myth of Gareth Evans’s innovative 2011 Indonesian action flick The Raid is still resonating some six years after its release, evidenced by the Welsh helmer’s backlog, which, amongst other high-profile projects, consists of writing/directing The Raid 3 and writing an American remake of The Raid.
