Can a human and a machine love one another? This is the question Humans dedicates itself to not only asking, but to asking in as many ways possible.
The show exists in a setting familiar to most science-fiction fans: a world in which lifelike humanoid machines populate society’s homes and businesses. Like the hosts of Westworld or the replicants of Blade Runner, they’re anatomically identical to humans and nearly blend in with humans. However, unlike hosts and replicants, the “Synths” of Humans do not think, trick, manipulate, feel or lie. That is, except for a select few – Niska, Mia, and a handful of others – who are disrupting expectations due to their “consciousness code.”
The second season of Humans picks up a few months after its first season and opens with Niska (Emily Berrington), perhaps the most intriguing of the conscious Snyths,...

The fact that Channel 4 (and its international partner AMC) announced a second series of Humans one day before the first series concluded in the UK helped to somewhat alleviate the weight of expectation on tonight's finale - no matter what happened, we knew the story would not end here.
That said, after the kind of ratings success that's been unheard of for 20 years - and near-unanimous critical approval - episode 1.8 of the unnerving sci-fi series still had a lot to live up to. This finale isn't perfect - afflicted by a few of the same problems that have affected the entire series - but it's mighty impressive nonetheless.
Hobb is now holding Elster's children against their will - and that's a pivotal point, because the power-mad professor's endgame is not to halt the next stage of Synth evolution, merely to control it.
He wishes to instil free will in all Synths,...

One question still looming over Humans, even this late in the game, is; who is Karen Voss?
A thinking, feeling Synth - yet apparently not part of David Elster's original batch - Ruth Bradley's character has been this show's rogue element - and its biggest enigma - since her true nature was revealed in episode four.
Here, the whole truth is revealed - 'Karen' is a synthetic recreation of Elster's dead wife. Unable to come to terms with what he had created, Elster later took his own life - as his beloved Beatrice had done. Karen now seeks to end her own life, but - in a cruel and ironic twist - is prevented from doing so by Elster's programming.
(We also learn a little about the real Karen Voss - though it's a pity this brief and rather extraneous sub-plot is Pete Drummond's sole contribution this week.

Humans, Season One, “Episode Four”
Written by Joe Barton
Directed by Daniel Nettheim
Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
Laura’s suspicions that Anita wasn’t like other synths has grown over the course of the series, giving the audience a deeper look into her psyche and aversion to synths, and what drives it. Her reluctance has gradually given way to interest, and this week’s episode delves further into Laura’s exploration of the possibility of synth emotions. The result is an entertaining, if somewhat disproportionately focused episode, that manages to introduce ambiguity to both Laura and Mattie with regards to how they’ll handle the idea of sentient synths, while fleshing out Pete Drummond and his storyline.
Laura’s examination of synths continues to be a fascinating storyline, and may be the first positive hope of acceptance for synths who gain consciousness. It’s apparent...

Directed by Daniel Nettheim
Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
With the synths who gained consciousness getting separated and scatted in the Humans pilot, much of the subsequent episodes have focused on how the synths have dealt with the aftermath, along with following the trials and tribulations of Leo and Max as the duo try to find them. This week’s episode puts the focus on both Niska and Anita in the aftermath of last week’s ending, examining how the two adjust to their changed circumstances. The result is a strong episode that continues to effectively build the show’s world while opening some fascinating directions for characters to go in.
The uneasy relationship between Laura and Anita continues to be a fascinating aspect of this show. Laura’s discomfort around Anita...

Episode five of Humans puts a halt on the action and takes time to answer some questions, while simultaneously posing a few philosophical conundrums in the process.
After last week's ultra creepy robot sex moves from family man Joe (Tom Goodman-Hill) and his helper Anita (Gemma Chan), the fallout takes an unexpected turn. His daughter (and general Synth snooper) Mattie discovers that Anita's "adult mode" has been activated and immediately blames her brother, Toby. When confronted by his mother, the young boy rather bravely takes responsibility.
Given our collective disappointment of Joe's actions, it slides further when his own son expresses his dismay and disgust at his father. While he doesn't quite redeem himself, Joe does come clean to his wife Laura (Katherine Parkinson) in a deeply affecting scene.
But any thoughts of redemption are quickly doused when he refers to Anita as a "machine" and as...
