About Dry Grasses (Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
Nuri Bilge Ceylan made a triumphant return to Cannes last year with About Dry Grasses, for which Merve Dizdar won Best Actress at Cannes, and now Turkey’s Oscar entry now arrives on streaming. In his review, Leonardo Goi said, “The pastures in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s luminous new film are only dry at the very end. Save for that brief summery coda, the landscape in About Dry Grasses remains a snowcapped immensity where prairies are ringed by belittling peaks, people stand out as calligraphic silhouettes, and snow falls so heavy as to blot out everything. It’s as if it fell ‘to make oblivion possible,’ observes art teacher Samet (Deniz Celiloglu), and in a film...

Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett, Emmy-nominated producer Coco Francini of Dirty Films, and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, announced the 11 recipients of their Proof of Concept Accelerator program, supported by the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity.
“We have been astonished by the artistry of all 1,200 filmmakers who applied to Proof of Concept, which proves that there are so many voices out there who deserve to find their audience. Our final selection represents filmmakers who we felt had the experience and vision to take their careers to the next level and make creative and compelling film and television that may transform the landscape of storytelling. We are grateful to the applicants, our incredible selection committee, and the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity for their unwavering support and guidance as we take another step towards creating an ecosystem that supports inclusion of gender marginalized directors at the highest levels of the entertainment business,...

Proof of Concept, an accelerator program supporting women, trans and nonbinary filmmakers founded by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, has set its inaugural class of filmmakers.
Proof of Concept was created after Dirty Films partners Blanchett and Francini met Smith at a Kering Women in Motion talk during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. On Monday, the trio reunited to discuss the progress they’ve made in building the new program, which was announced in December 2023 with the mission to support an inaugural class of 8 emerging filmmakers.
Among the updates shared was that the trio and their all-star selection committee — Chloé Zhao, Emma Corrin, Eva Longoria, Greta Gerwig, Jane Campion, Janicza Bravo, Lily Gladstone and Lilly Wachowski — had made their final selections out of more than 1,200 applications. They also announced that with the support of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, the program...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

“It goes without saying: congratulations on your work.” So said Film Independent President, at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Award nominee brunch on January 6. Held for the second consecutive year at Santa Monica’s beachfront Casa Del Mar hotel, the purpose of the annual gathering was twofold: to celebrate our current cohort of Spirit Award nominees, and to hand out the three Emerging Filmmaker Awards, each carrying with it a $25,000 unrestricted cash grant for its recipient. Welsh added, “The excellence you’ve brought this year has enlivened and inspired us at a critical time.”
The awards portion of the Saturday gathering–grand ballroom windows giving way to a spectacular beach view–was hosted by two of Hollywood’s buzziest performers and past Spirit Award nominees, Colman Domingo and Lily Gladstone. “It really feels incredible to be here and see all of you,” said Domingo, enthusiastically.

Great horror never gets old. The genre was as alive as ever in 2023, with the year's buzziest titles ranging from the large-scale devastation of "Godzilla Minus One" (yeah, sci-fi monsters bring horror too!) to the gnarly indie frisson of "Talk to Me," from the franchise-galvanizing prowess of "Evil Dead Rise" to the surprising earnestness of "Saw X" (and the whatever-the-heck-that-was of "Infinity Pool"). However, many of the year's best horror offerings did not achieve the levels of buzz generated by the aforementioned flicks.
This list compiles 15 exercises in fear and dread from 2023 which were grossly underrated, in that they received mixed or poor responses from critics and/or audiences. We've honed in on the ones that failed to garner the amount of attention or acclaim that their efforts deserved. Some have a lot in common with each other, and some are wildly different, but all of them are worth watching if you're a horror enthusiast.

To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. While both fought for better working conditions and deservedly won, the work stoppage no doubt plays a large role in the theatrical slate both this year and at least into the next. Through it all, horror continues to thrive. Box office records were shattered and indie darlings and international gems continue to surprise audiences. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.
That reflects in 2023’s horror offerings, which has given everything from unexpected lo-fi indie hits like Skinamarink and Screambox’s can’t-miss The Outwaters...

The final month of the year has arrived, and with it an early Festivus bounty of news (very exciting!) about the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are happening once again on February 25, back on the beach in Santa Monica. Last week brought tell of our incomparable new Spirit Awards host: SNL funnywoman and Emmy-nominated streaming series auteur Aidy Bryant. Birth/Rebirth (Laura Moss)
Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Directed by Laura Moss, there’s the sense they either don’t have much of a feel for the genre or rather harbors a general disdain for the shorthands it’s fallen into (hopefully they don’t get absorbed into bad studio product soon), the film’s tendencies refreshingly feel free of the trappings of calling-card cinema. – Ethan V. Sonuvagun, Halloween is almost here. Our attention is drawn to November, the bridge between spooky season and the horror-day season. Shudder has announced the lineup of title(s) for month. it is admittedly a slim month for programming. We guess our American friends will be so full up on Turkey Day and Black Friday savings there won't be time for anything else that month. The rest of the regions will just have to pull up our socks and wait for December. The only new film added to the lineup is Laura Moss's Birth/Rebirth. Our own Mel caught the film when it played at Sundance earlier this year. If you feel so inclined you can read his review here. The rest of the programming is in...

The Adults (Dustin Guy Defa)
Six years after directing his last feature, Dustin Guy Defa returns with The Adults, a film of complicated shared histories and gradually revealing inner lives. With his relatively sprawling Person to Person, Defa followed a wide array of characters over five interweaving storylines. This time he focuses on one family and, closer still, on an unmistakable feeling: that of moving out and growing up, only to return home and realize all that delicately assembled adulthood was merely a façade. Playing out across a leafy town in upstate New York, The Adults follows a trio of siblings as they reunite: the brother who went away and the sisters who did not. – Rory O. (full review)

Plot: A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. When the girl’s mother (Judy Reyes), a nurse (Marin Ireland), discovers her baby alive, they enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return.
Review: Any film about the death of a child is going to be a tough watch and Birth/Rebirth is certainly no walk in the park. There were moments when my mouth was agape in shock. But between the wonderful performances and stellar directing, it’s a film that will leave you enthralled from start to finish.
The story concerns a mother losing her daughter and discovering that the morgue worker has somehow raised her from the dead. The concept could have easily seemed silly or unbelievable in less capable hands. Yet...

Neon’s re-release of Park Chan-Wook’s 2003 Oldboy grossed an estimated $495k on 250 screens this weekend for a total cume of $880k over five days. It’s set to cross the $1 million in its first week back – surpassing a cumulative North American gross of $707k with original distributor Metro Tartan Film. The classic revenge thriller came out in 2003 and was released Stateside in 2005. It was the first South Korean film to win the Grand Prix in Cannes in 2004 and took in $15 million worldwide.
It’s rare for re-releases to top $1 million at the domestic box office. Others that have include Studio Ghibli fare and James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.
The restored and remastered version of Oldboy opened last Wednesday at $235k, landing in the top ten alongside summer tentpole including Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Top-performing cities include San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. An...

The following interview was originally published during our Sundance 2023 coverage and is being republished today ahead of birth/rebirth hitting theaters via IFC Films and Shudder this weekend. — Editor The narrative kernel of birth/rebirth, Laura Moss’s debut feature, was originally planted in the writer-director’s mind 20 years ago. The filmmaker (and former Emt) was creatively stirred after reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and feeling that its interest in unnatural procreation could translate well to an all-female retelling. It was only last week I was reviewing a new take on the Dracula myth, The Last Voyage of the Demeter Review: Dracula’s Nautical Journey Lacks Tension”>The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Deeper into both the dog days of August and the realms of video on demand comes Birth/Rebirth, a modern retelling (of sorts) of Mary Shelley’s timeless science-fiction horror tale. This (thankfully far superior) film is set in a modern New York so soulless and drab that viewers will be bound to get more frights from the realization of how deadening life in the 2020s can sometimes feel than any requisite veers into the macabre.
Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Directed by Laura Moss,...

A brand new take on the classic tale of Frankenstein, Sundance horror movie birth/rebirth is on the way from IFC Films and Shudder, arriving exclusively in theaters only on August 18. Ahead of its release, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive clip introducing its central characters through an intense confrontation.
In the film, “Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction. She also has an obsession — the reanimation of the dead. Celie (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse who has built her life around her bouncy, chatterbox six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister). When one tragic night, Lila suddenly falls ill and dies, the two women’s worlds crash into each other. They embark on a dark path of no return where they will be forced to confront how far they are willing to go to protect what they hold most dear.”

“Dignity and motherhood don’t always line up,” observes Judy Reyes’s Celie in Birth/Rebirth. She offers this pearl of wisdom, an encapsulation of the film’s thesis, with an air of encouragement to Emily, an expectant mother played by Breeda Wool. The rest of Laura Moss’s film, though, is seldom as sanguine when approaching the subject.
Birth/Rebirth restages Mary Shelley’s Romantic-era creation story Frankenstein within the trappings of modern motherhood. Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland), informed by her struggles to conceive, throws herself to experimental research aided by her access to body parts as a morgue technician. This sets her on a collision course with Celie, a Bronx-based maternity nurse, following the unexpected death of her six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister).
Rose’s reanimation of Lila brings them into an unconventional co-parenting situation as each alternates between appreciating and abhorring their shared project. The richest...

"This experiment is bigger than your daughter." IFC Films + Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Birth/Rebirth, also written all lowercase as birth/rebirth. This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the Midnight section. It also played at a bunch of other film festivals over the last few months, with a release set for August in theaters before it streams on Shudder in the fall. A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from other pregnant women. After screening work at the Tribeca Film Festival, Rotterdam, and SXSW, NYC filmmaker Laura Moss made their feature directorial debut at Sundance this past January with “birth/rebirth.” And it didn’t disappoint at the festival: The Playlist’s review says “Moss presents the movie as an eerie amalgam, stitching together horror roots with an off-kilter tone, dreamlike framing, and a focus on human sin over monster shenanigans.

The trailer arrives for birth/rebirth, the feature debut of writer-director Laura Moss, a 25 New Faces alum from 2017. Co-written by Moss and their longtime screenwriting partner Brendan O’Brien, the film is essentially a modern-day take on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, examining the biological urge to create life (whether through scientific exploits or human procreation) and the true meaning of “motherhood.” In my interview with Moss out of this year’s Sundance, I provide a general rundown of the film’s plot: The film follows Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland), a brilliant pathologist lacking in basic social skills. Our own Tyler Nichols gave the Frankenstein-inspired horror film Birth/Rebirth a 9/10 review after catching a Sundance screening earlier this year (you can read his review Here), and now a wider audience will have the chance to see it when it receives a theatrical release on August 18th. With that date just one month away, a trailer for Birth/Rebirth has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Birth/Rebirth is coming to us from IFC Films and Shudder, so we can probably expect to see the movie reach the Shudder streaming service sometime in the near future.
Judy Reyes of Scrubs stars in the film alongside Marin Ireland of The Umbrella Academy and Aj Lister of Challengers. The feature debut of director Laura Moss, who also wrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien, Birth/Rebirth has the following synopsis: Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction.
