When Salman Khan announced his much-awaited Eid release 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai' would have a hybrid release, there were mixed reactions all around. With theatrical release mainly in the overseas market besides a negligible number of halls in India, "Radhe" dropped on the pay-per-view (PPV) platform Zeeplex for viewers in the country. The industry was looking at a new way of taking films to the viewers, one that had never been tried out in the country before.
A week after the film's release on May 13, the question doing the rounds among fans is an obvious one: Is "Radhe" a hit or a flop, given its new strategy of hybrid release?
Zee has announced that the film saw 4.2 million views across its online and Dth platforms on day one, adding that the heavy traffic temporarily brought servers down on that day, according to a report in livemint.com.

Why take this decision at all?" "Such a sad day for cinema. Film Certification Appellate Tribunal Abolished | 6 April, 2021," expressed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. New Delhi, Feb 14 (Ians) The idea of simultaneously releasing films in theatres and on Ott platforms caught the world by surprise, but there seems to be an alternative to the model that is brewing in India, which is shortening the gap between theatrical release and Ott release.
The trend came to notice first when the Tamil film "Master", starring Vijay and Vijay Sethupathy, dropped digitally within days of release in January.
"Can foresee the fight of windowing b/w cinemas & Ott by reducing the gap time period. Like #WarnerBros releases in US simultaneous with @hbomax many #Hindi films too may try same, South has already reduced time gap unknowingly. Time to retrospect, Pan India Industry norm is need of the hour," trade expert Girish Johar tweeted at that time.

Cinema halls have received the green signal to operate with 100 per cent occupancy. It is positive news for the theatre owners, but not so for the box office just yet.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday allowed theatres to be operate with full capacity from February 1, except in containment zones, while adhering to health safety protocols. However, despite the call, the film trade could be months away from good business. Without big releases and a psychological block over Covid still looming in the minds of many, the audience is not interested in returning to theatres right away, irrespective of whether occupancy rules allow 50 or 100 per cent.
"It was long awaited. After the central government, we await go ahead by the state government. But it is a big breather for the exhibition industry. Now, we hope that the state governments are also proactive in giving us the permission," trade expert Girish Johar said.

There is a new tide seeping into the world of showbiz, with Warner Bros. planning to simultaneously release films in theatres and on Ott platofrm. The decision is subject of much discussion and debate. Many industry insiders have called it a disturbing move for the film trade. In India especially, they feel there will be opposition as well as repercussions if the idea is tried out.
Last week, the Hollywood studio shook up the film industry when it revealed that its 2021 slate, including blockbusters such as "Matrix 4", "Dune" and "Suicide Squad", will simultaneously release in theatres and on its streaming platform HBO Max.
As of now, the plan does not have a direct impact in India, with the streaming platform in question yet to be launched in the country. However, Bollywood is watching. While most are optimistic such a trend will not come into India, there is a lingering...

Ever since cinemas reopened in parts of India as part of the unlock process, a few new releases -- including Hollywood films -- have hit the big screen. Trade experts say regular Hollywood popcorn flicks will not help bring the crowds back to theatres, nor will small Bollywood releases. A star-studded pan-India film would do the trick, with good marketing.
The Diwali weekend saw the release of "Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari", starring Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Shaikh. the film was the first new Bollywood release following the opening of cinemas after the Covid-19 lockdown. Although the film received a lot of support from the film fraternity, it could not excite the audience much.
According to a trade source, the comedy film could not even rake in a crore at the box office since its release on November 15.
Among other new releases was the Maisie Williams-starrer, "The New Mutants...

New Delhi, Nov 10 (Ians) This year, Diwali fervour will stream onto your Ott screens rather than come alive on the big screen, owing to the ongoing pandemic. An explosion of new content to keep you hooked is being readied to drop on digital platforms, to mark the festival of lights.

OTTs are the best alternative in the current situation. Hence, viewership numbers may witness an upward trend on Ott platforms (during the festive season)," Chandrashekar Mantha, Partner, Deloitte India, told Ians.

New Delhi, Nov 6 (Ians) Cinema halls have reopened after the pandemic, but exhibitors say they are struggling to bounce back in business.
Lack of new content, missing magic of big Bollywood entertainers and fear of the virus have all led people to avoid the cinematic experience, forcing theatre owners run shows with empty seats.
Last month, cinemas in several states including Delhi-ncr opened doors to patrons after seven months. The government of Maharashtra also announced reopening of theatres across the state on November 5, with 50 per cent occupancy.
These are positive signs for the film trade but they pose new challenges, mainly pertaining to luring people back into the theatres.

India will play against South Africa in their World Cup campaign opener in Southampton.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta told a publication: "I don't think the match will adversely affect box office collections of 'Bharat' on Day 1. If the World Cup cricket match is important, Salman Khan means the world to millions of film lovers."
"Bharat", directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, is bringing Salman back to the big screen a year after "Race 3", which too coincided with Eid. The box office is witnessing wonders from fresh talents. But among the 'kings', some factors set Akshay Kumar apart as the real 'khiladi'. What makes Akshay's box office journey different from other Bollywood superstars is his consistency to hit silver screen with several movies a year and draw in the audience. According to Shibasish Sarkar of Reliance Entertainment, which will distribute Akshay's upcoming film "Sooryavanshi", it's the actor's "tremendous discipline, his lifestyle and rigour of keeping churning out three-four films a year" that make him a box office 'khiladi'.
"Of course, he has talent, understanding of the market and everything. But this would not have been possible without the discipline he maintains," Sarkar, Reliance Entertainment's Group CEO, told Ians.
For the production, exhibition and distribution sectors, the 51-year-old's films are a win-win all the way, says film and trade expert Girish Johar.

ControversyThe final 3D application of the film was submitted to Cbfc on Thursday (December 28).Ians After months of uncertainty, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's controversial Hindi film Padmavati will release on January 25 as Padmavat with a U/A certificate. It will clash with Akshay Kumar's Pad Man. "It will release as 'Padmavat' on January 25. The film has got U/A certificate," sources at the film's production banner Viacom18 Motion Pictures told Ians. "Padmavati" -- now "Padmavat" -- was earlier slated for release on December 1 but the studio had voluntarily deferred it following a long-stretched controversy. The movie, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been mired in a row after the Shree Rajput Karni Sena claimed it distorted historical facts related to the Rajput community. The group has been persistent in its demand for a ban on the movie despite Bhansali's clarification before a Parliamentary committee that the row over the movie was just based on rumours. Last month, the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) -- in consultation with a special advisory panel -- decided it will grant U/A certificate to the movie but subject to five modifications, including title change. The makers were asked to add disclaimers -- one of them regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati and also relevant modifications in the song "Ghoomar" to befit the character portrayed. An official communication from team "Padmavat" regarding the final modifications has not been made yet. Its release date announcement led to a stir in the film trade circles. Film and trade business expert Girish Johar told Ians: "It's a complex situation for 'Padmavat'. They have too short a time before the release, plus there are hurdles for it as certain states have announced a blanket ban, and the Karni Sena continues to oppose the movie. "However, from the box office point of view, it's a great thing that two big films -- 'Padmavat' and 'Pad Man' -- will release on the extended weekend. It will be a huge weekend. Audiences will have a choice of both films. Obviously the better one will have a longer run." "Pad Man" will see Akshay Kumar take on the role of a real life hero who introduced low-cost sanitary napkins for the hygiene and safety of women in his village. According to the buzz, the "Padmavat" release announcement has also impacted the release date of movies like "Aiyaary" and "Pari". ...

Just a fortnight remains for the release of Rustom, easily one of the most awaited films of the season, and the makers are indeed a happy lot as the countdown begins for its arrival. While the promo did the trick by immediately attracting audience attention, the songs have done well too to keep the interest alive for the film which is pitched as a unique romantic-musical-suspense thriller.
No wonder, the makers of Rustom [KriArj Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., Essel Vision Productions Ltd, A Friday Filmworks] are a happy lot that their confidence in the film’s subject and faith they put in Akshay Kumar’s credentials as a superstar actor have paid off in a big way.
Says Virender Arora of KriArj Entertainment, “Rustom is a clear reflection of the superb choices that Akshay is making as an actor. You can see that he is bringing in a lot of variation in the characters he is playing. He is enacting more and more challenging roles.

Superstar actor, action supremo and Bollywood’s man of the moment Akshay Kumar has once again dominated the India and international box office with the tremendous performance of his latest film ‘Gabbar Is Back’ taking 46.46 crores in the first four days, making it the highest opener of 2015 so far, and counting. The fantastic performance of ‘Gabbar Is Back’ has also had industry insiders crediting Akshay’s vigilante extravaganza as having resurged Bollywood’s recent lean period, taking more at the box office in one weekend then many recent films have taken in three weeks.
The movie is a mass entertainer with Akshay delivering some power-packed punches. Riding on the Aam Aadmi wave in India, the film carries a strong message against corruption with Akshay as the new vigilante in town.
