“No ma’am, we don’t need Hollywood,” would-be movie producer Wayne tells his crew at the start of the horror film X. “These types of pictures turn regular folks into stars.”
The type of pictures in question are pornographic films, for which Wayne (Martin Henderson) has assembled a small cast and crew and brought them to a secluded Texas farmhouse. Set in 1979, the slasher X not only pays homage to the decade’s grisly and low-budget horror movies but it also captures a moment in which loosening obscenity laws and increased home viewing options make pornography a profitable business.
A few months after X hit theaters, director Ti West released the prequel film Pearl, which he co-wrote with star Mia Goth. Pearl takes place in 1918, long before changing mores made pornography prevalent. In fact, pornography appears only briefly in Pearl, when projectionist (future Superman David Cornswet) tries to impress...

Chelsea Wolfe’s music is heavy. Whether it’s the neofolk of her early releases or the doom metal of 2017’s Hiss Spun, the singer-songwriter’s work is always immersed in gothic touches. Wolfe’s seventh studio album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, finds her moving in yet another sonic direction—closer to trip-hop and industrial than traditional rock—but still channeling that same witchy, backwoods spirit.
The album’s inspirations are immediately apparent on opener “Whispers in the Echo Chamber.” The timbre of Wolfe’s voice evokes that of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, and the beat is strikingly similar to the trip-hop pioneers’ aptly titled “Machine Gun.” Throughout the track, Bryan Tulao’s metallic lead guitar helps to elevate the tension.
Wolfe and producer David Sitek give the music more space to breathe on the album’s second half. Backed by ominous piano, “Salt” is restrained but just as menacing,...

Noise auteurs The Body and electronic artist Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen, have announced the collaborative album Orchards of a Futile Heaven, arriving February 23rd via Thrill Jockey. The lead single “Holy Lance” can be streamed now.
The mysterious track offers a glimpse into the full breadth of the collab, as Chen’s voice cuts through a haze of droning noise. The tension builds to a climactic drop of feedback squalls and pulverizing guitar, with the vocals of Chen rising to match the sonic swell. Overall, the track recalls the post-metal adjacent music of Chelsea Wolfe, Myrkur, and Big|Brave, among others.
The Body and Dis Fig found common ground in their desire to make heavy music that defies “the tropes of metal and electronic music.” As heard on “Holy Lance,” they instead merged the two genres to create something altogether their own.

Chelsea Wolfe has announced her new album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, arriving February 9th as the first release on her new label home Loma Vista. Wolfe also shared the video for the album’s second single, “Whispers in the Echo Chamber.”
The new song follows the same experimental post-metal path as the LP’s lead single, “Dusk,” but features a more tangible industrial stance. A pulsing electronic drum beats sets a sparse and methodical pace, as Wolfe’s voice shimmers and sways against the dark musical backdrop. According to a press release, the vocal effect was achieved by running her voice through producer David Andrew Sitek’s modular wall and was “meant to reflect those persistent intuitive voices that start rising up within you when it’s time to step out of the old and into the new.”

At long last, Chelsea Wolfe is returning with a brand new album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, set for release on February 9, 2024, through Lomas Vista (pre-order).
Horror fans would know Wolfe as she collaborated with Ti West on the score for X and created an original track for the credits.
To kickstart the hype, Wolfe has released a gloomy new music video for the track “Whispers in the Echo Chamber”, the lead single off the album.
“Wolfeʼs seventh studio album is a rebirth in process. Itʼs a powerfully cathartic statement about cutting ties and an important reminder that healing is cyclical, not a simple linear process,” hypes the release.
As Wolfe explains, “Itʼs a record about the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance. Itʼs a story of freeing yourself from situations and...

One of my favorite underground bands over the past few years is Iress, a Los Angeles-based doomgaze band that’s reminiscent of Alice in Chains with a heavy dose of 90s grunge.
Vocalist Michelle Malley has been dubbed the “Adele of Doom” by her LA music peers
Iress has generated a tremendous underground following since their 2nd self-released album, 2020’s must-hear Flaw.
The band returned from a long pandemic show break with a sold-out headlining show at LA venue The Echo and have now shared “Ricochet”, the first track on their forthcoming EP, Solace, arriving May 12 via Dune Altar Records!
“I feel emotional every time I sing ‘Ricochet’,” the singer told Buzz Bands. “I started writing it a couple years back during a really rough time in my life. When the band got their hands on it, it really transformed into something powerful. It’s a song about loss and...

For me, the score or soundtrack is one of the most vital pieces of a film. It doesn't just set the tone for the story — it shapes the way you feel about it. Music can pull you right out of a scene if it doesn't fit or push you over the edge if you're on the verge of tears. It can fill your heart with happiness or punch you right in the gut. Music can also make you feel completely and totally understood.
None of us would be writing for /Film if we weren't compulsive in our love of movies and TV, but of all my obsessions — which also include books and comics — music is the one that I've always had the deepest ties to. I listen to music when I do literally anything. It's my gospel, the altar at which I worship, my lifeline. I truly believe my life...

Vowws, the Los Angeles-based Australian duo heavily inspired by Quentin Tarantino and horror movie scores, has been dropping single after single as they tour alongside Deftones.
While the new album isn’t due until March, they’re offering up another taste of what’s to come with the chilling ballad, “Wait”, featuring the forever haunting Chelsea Wolfe.
Written during the height of pandemic isolation, dealing with the sadness of watching humanity turn on itself – it is a love song, a desperate call to no one, and a melancholic reflection on a time that has seemingly disappeared as we rush to forget what we may never understand.
“This is the most direct, honest song we’ve written,” the band explained. “It wasn’t meant to be a Vowws song originally, it was just an expression of feeling during a difficult time. But it took on a life of its own, especially...

Photo: 'Pearl' In March 2020, Ti West made the 1970’s horror-inspired film ‘X.’ It is a movie that is inspired by movies like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ Others will be reminded of Paul Thoman Anderson’s ‘Boogie Nights.’ A group of young people choose to make a pornographic film in a farmhouse owned by an elderly couple. The film is not for the faint of heart. However, those who have a strong interest in the slasher genre will succumb to its homage to 1970s grindhouse flair and the social commentary on sexuality and youth. The movie also contains a powerful score by Tyler Bates and experimental goth rock musician Chelsea Wolfe. ‘X’ captures how a murdering couple Pearl and Howard envied the youthful filmmakers who take advantage of their youth by having hardcore sex with each other. Pearl became so envious, she and Howard decided to kill the young adults one by one.

Ti West’s X is an excellent film for many reasons: every element is on point, from the screenplay to the acting to the cinematography. The inventive slasher, set in 1979, centers on the conflict between the cast and crew of a porn film, led by Mia Goth’s Maxine, and the elderly couple whose property they’re […]

Tweedy offers a wholly unique take on “For You (I’d Do Anything),” doing away with the tender country pluck of Erickson’s original, and instead using a mix of synths and pianos to craft a sweet and meditative soundscape.

Neofolk singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has announced a new forthcoming album, Birth of Violence, her first record since 2017’s Hiss Spun, out September 13th.

Deafheaven singer George Clarke sings with Chelsea Wolfe in the band’s “Night People” video. Director Ben Chisolm maximizes every nuance of the duo’s faces, utilizing jittery editing and dreamlike blurs as they harmonize.

Deafheaven have concerts booked throughout the summer and fall, including a series of European/U.

Deafheaven fancy themselves as a modern-day Bad Brains, but instead of blending hardcore punk and reggae, they combine vicious black metal with expansive space rock. They alternated between the two on their 2013 breakthrough record, Sunbather, and indulged Pink Floyd proclivities like secretly recording a drug deal, before abandoning a lot of the psychedelia that made them interesting on their third record, 2015’s too-heavy-for-its-own-good New Bermuda. Now they’ve returned to their original muse and are splitting the difference between the battering-ram riffage of Darkthrone and the sparkly, soaring melodies of...

Few bands are as suitably named as Deafheaven, whose explosive mixture of black-metal ferocity, majestic melodies and complex song structures makes for a volatile and continually shifting sound. Blistering riffs, blast beats and George Clarke’s throat-shredding snarl morph into serene instrumental passages that recall Radiohead or the calmer moments from avant-metal outfits like Pelican and Mono; they’re the kind of band where you’ll adjust the volume multiple times over the course of an album or even a single song (and Deafheaven’s songs regularly break the 10-minute mark).
Those extremes are thrown into more dramatic relief than ever on the veteran Bay Area outfit’s fourth album, “Ordinary Corrupt Human Love,” which opens with a bucolic, piano-driven instrumental section (including a female spoken-word voiceover) that doesn’t shift into aggro mode until the end. Indeed, the band’s quiet side is more prominent here than on any...
