For this year’s incarnation of the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow, someone had the excellent idea of commissioning the artist formerly known as The Small Stakes to design a series of posters for their Texas Monthly series, in which films will be screened in the Texas towns in which they were made or set. I first wrote about The Small Stakes, who now prefers to go by his real name, Jason Munn, a couple of years ago. Jason is one of the best gig poster designers around (Chronicle recently published a beautiful book of his collected work) and I had bemoaned the fact that he didn’t do more movie posters. So the Alamo Drafthouse set things to right. Jason’s work is indelibly clean, spare, witty and beautifully executed. In his gig posters he tends to use a lot of repeated objects—waves, paintbrushes, arrows, cats, birds, guitars, records...

When it comes to interactive cinema experiences, nobody does it better than the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse. For years, the theater’s creative directors have been consistently breaking the fourth wall by creating new and innovative ways for audiences to interact with the the films they watch. Whether by equipping their audience with cap guns to help assist Ash at a screening of Army of Darkness, or providing a full range of wine sampling for a showing of Sideways, there is nothing the Alamo crew won’t do in order to amp up the movie going experience.
This year Alamo has chosen to up their game with a clever reworking of their popular Rolling Roadshow event. For those not familiar with the Drafthouse, the Rolling Roadshow is a sort of mobile movie festival that works its way throughout different cities offering up an eclectic selection of film screenings. If...

In an impressive show of state pride and clever programming, the Alamo Drafthouse, the much-lauded Austin-based movie theater chain run by the same folks behind nerd art and t-shirt purveyor Mondo and annual genre film festival Fantastic Fest, is doing a roving summer screening series called The Rolling Road Show. Each of its ten lovely Texas cult classic films, from The Searchers to Bonnie and Clyde to Blood Simple, will be shown outdoors in a town related to the film. To promote the series, the Drafthouse worked with artist Jason Munn to create new, graphically minimalist posters for these films, such as the beautiful update on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, below.
Poster remakes have become popular among rising young illustrators in the last couple of years, so the Rolling Road Show’s tactic, while not entirely novel, is timely in capitalizing on a bit of a phenomenon. The fixation on...

Austin has a number of special screenings and events coming up in the next week or two, so I thought I'd list some of them here. I also recommend checking the Austin Chronicle's weekly Special Screenings listing (updated online on Friday mornings) as well as Austin Creative Alliance's Now Playing Austin site (which I wish would make film event listings as prominent as the other arts, hint hint).
Don't forget to check our Guide to Free (and Cheap) Summer Movies in Austin for a great listing of film series that will fit your budget.
It's a Very Joe Swanberg weekend here in Austin. The Chicago indie filmmaker will participate in an Afs Moviemaker Dialogue on Saturday night at Austin Studios. On Sunday, Alamo Drafthouse Ritz hosts two Swanberg movies, Art History and Uncle Kent (both featuring actor Kent Osborne), with Swanberg attending. And on Monday night, he'll stick around when...

In case you didn't know, this year's edition of the Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow is all about Texas. While previously the event has featured film screenings in other locales around the country, this year it's staying relatively local to the famous theater's roots in Austin, Texas. So for those fortunate enough to be nearby, the line-up of films is stellar with The Searchers, The Texas Chainsaw Masscare, Blood Simple, Hud, Red River, Bonnie and Clyde, Tender Mercies, No Country for Old Men, Giant, and The Last Picture Show and now we have custom posters from artist Jason Munn to promote these. Here are all the fantastic posters for the latest Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow courtesy of Apple: Personally my favorite of the batch is the Bonnie and Clyde poster, but they're all really fantastic posters. If this is the first you're hearing of the Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow in Texas this year,...

Texas is known for being flat, minimalistic but still incredibly beautiful and that's certainly the theme of the posters for the 2011 Rolling Roadshow. This year, instead of going all across the country, the Alamo Drafthouse is keeping things close to home as they'll travel across the Lone Star State and show Texas films set in Texas [1]. Films such as Blood Simple, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Searchers, Red River and more. The posters premiered on Apple.com and, much like happened last year with Olly Moss [2], this year they were all done by one artist: Jason Munn. We've got all the images and schedule after the jump. Thanks to Apple.com for these images [3]. Last year, Olly Moss went for a specific theme and this year is the same, one artist, one theme. [gallery columns="2"] And here's the schedule with descriptions from the press release. June 3 – The Searchers in Fort Parker, Texas...

[1] When people think of a "pop idol" they generally think of someone who is young, talented, had a quick rise to fame and the kind of devoted loyal fan base who'd wait 24 hours on the street to see them. By those standards, and many more, U.K. based artist Olly Moss is now a pop idol. He rose to fame with his extremely popular designs [2] for Threadless, began making insta-sell-out posters based on properties like Lost, Star Wars and The Evil Dead and quickly became one of the most in demand and influential pop culture artists today because of unique minimalist style and obvious passion for the material. Moss was at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles this weekend [3] to premiere his first solo art show, an event which had been shrouded in secrecy for months. Fans began lining up 24 hours beforehand to have a chance to snag a Moss original and...

The DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com Lost-Inspired art viral has finally come to an end. Here is a round up of the art revealed that we've covered thus far: Hurley-inspired print by Tim Doyle. Locke-inspired poster created by UK artist Olly Moss, Dharma Van print by Methane Studios, "The Crash" poster by Eric Tan, "The 4-toed Statue by Jason Munn, Ken Taylor's "The Smoke Monster", Kevin Tong's "The Hatch", and Dan McCarthy's "Rousseau's Transmission". We haven't posted about any of the Lost poster prints in a while because they sold out before we even learned they were put online. The 16th and final poster was unveiled last night at Gallery 1988's Lost Underground Art Show, and it is the best one yet -- a poster designed by /Film favorite Tyler Stout. We've been writing about artist Tyler Stout since I first found his "Remember the Alamo" poster at the Alamo Drafthouse.
