Searching to find your rightful place in the world, where you’re unquestionably accepted and embraced by the people around you, can be an disheartening prospect for some people. Not only does Raymond, the quirky protagonist in the independent horror comedy, ‘Suburban Gothic,’ which was directed by Richard Bates Jr., struggle to find a job he enjoys and excels at, but also discover the real meaning of having true friends and family. But the process of making the film, which the helmer also co-wrote with Mark Bruner, wasn’t as intimidating of a process for the filmmaker once he began penning the script. Not only did Bates Jr. naturally reunite with Matthew [ Read More ]

Suburban Gothic
Written by Richard Bates Jr. and Mark Bruner
Directed by Richard Bates Jr.
USA, 2015
What makes a film a cult hit? Usually it’s a combination of an underground fan base, a kitschy premise or execution, a deeply engaging cast – either due to immeasurable talent, or a complete lack thereof. Most significantly, it requires the passage of time. Cult hits don’t form overnight. Their status takes time to germinate. Yet now we find ourselves in a time where manufacturing Cult is in. Suburban Gothic is a great example of this transition. Packed with cult icons, dripping with pulp imagery and texture, and littered with pithy one-liners, Suburban Gothic is an entertaining horror-comedy more intent on appearing Cult than trying to create a memorable piece of cinema.
The film centers on Raymond (Matthew Grey Gubler), a business-school grad who’s been forced to move back home to suburbia due to unreliable employment rates.

All that Suburban Gothic has to offer is on display during a simple yet effective opening scene. Center frame is the goofy, strangely captivating mug of actor Matthew Gray Gubler. His character Raymond, clad in a questionable and loud scarf and possessive of wild hair style, is utterly unimpressed with his guidance counselor, and seemingly most of life in general. He makes fun of her after being told he has no job prospects (despite an Mba), says the word ‘literally’ in a figurative way, and resigns himself to moving back home with his parents.
The matter-of-fact back and forth with Raymond joking under his breath is pretty much recreated on end throughout this so-called horror comedy that wants to be about finding a purpose while navigating boredom and familial pressure. It also wants to frighten and laugh, and those results are mixed at best.

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...
