- The band's name initially started as an insider joke between lead singer Florence Welch and Isabella Summers, who nicknamed themselves Florence Robot and Isabella Machine respectively. Having been an hour away from the first gig, the band didn't have a name at all. Welch first considered using 'Florence Robot/Isa Machine', which she considered too long, until she later chose 'Florence and the Machine'.
