What makes the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) so endearing beyond its penchant for experimentation is an atmosphere that’s joyful and devoid of stress or self-importance. That was evident at this year’s festival, inside theaters where it seemed like the experience was about sharing cinematic pearls and not about arranging financial deals. The film selection was once again a delightfully uneven mishmash of bold stories with, perhaps, a through line having to do with our complicated relationship to otherness.
In Ulaa Salim’s Eternal, this otherness takes the shape of the Earth itself and of a woman’s body. These two are metaphorically linked through the figure of a fracture, which appears as a sign of the end of times after an earthquake in Iceland cracks the Earth open, and is poetically mapped onto the body of Anita (Anna Søgaard Frandsen) when she and Elias (Viktor Hjelmsø) first have sex.

The choice of music in a TV show is a significant factor.
A well-conceptualized opening sequence accompanied by a great song can be more memorable than the TV show itself.
We have compiled 20 excellent opening theme songs to which one cannot help but move their body. And if they don't, their mind does the work for them.
20. I Don't Wanna Wait by Paula Cole on Dawson's Creek
The song marries well with the show's theme about a bunch of teens trying to figure life out. They don't wait for life to pass them by.
The opening sequence has the cast being playful and carefree in places around their town as Paula sings the lyrics.
You watch it several times and soon feel like part of the group.
It is easily one of the most recognizable opening songs ever.
19. Luck You Got by The HighStrung on Shameless (US)

There are few universal concepts more relatable than numbing away the pain of a breakup with booze, drugs, and sex. (In fact, the option of all three sometimes makes the breakup worth it.) In 'Habits', the Swedish songstress Tove Lo and soon-to-be-import from across the pond is here to show us how she deals with it all. Much more raw and emotional than the fun party pop of her Scandinavian contemporary Oh Land, Tove Lo screams out her feelings then slams them back down in a shot glass once filled with forgetfulness. I’m sure the feeling is familiar to many of us, but in this video you get the sense she’s been there one too many times for this kind of practice to be a passing fancy. Take a look: The music video takes us through the many ways Tove Lo deals with the pain of a breakup,...

HBO is taking the sharp success of "Girls" and applying the series' sensibilities to the music industry -- by releasing an official soundtrack.
"Girls - Volume 1: Music from the HBO Original Series" will feature music from the first and second seasons of the show. While it won't be available in time for holiday gift lists, the album hit stores on January 8 -- the same week as the show's Season 2 premiere (scheduled for January 13).
Lena Dunham announced the news on Twitter, saying that the "soundtrack drops, hard, on January 8th."
A standard 14-track and an expanded digital edition of the album will be released, featuring songs from bands that fans of the show will be familiar with, including Fleet Foxes, Sleigh Bells, Oh Land, and Fun. (whose guitarist, Jack Antonoff, has been romantically linked to Dunham).
The soundtrack also includes a new song by Santigold, which is eponymous with the series title.

First of all, I have to point out that I live in Bushwick and I have never been to a party that had crack when you were waiting in line for the bathroom. Maybe I'm just not going to the right parties. Anyhoo, let's talk about the girls going to the best party ever on Girls.
This big warehouse party caused some revelations for our hot messes. First, Marnie finds out that Charlie already has a new girlfriend. Jessa accidentally invites her boss, Hannah finds out some secrets about Adam. Oh yeah and Shoshannah smoked crack. Things really do change east of Williamsburg.
Honestly, with all the bad stuff that happened to the girls, I was happy that they all got their comeuppance. Marnie was being a bit selfish (honestly, I wouldn't have stayed at the party). She was completely out of her element, both being in Brooklyn and realizing that she's not perfect.

Girls Season 1, Episode 7: "Welcome To Bushwick aka The Crackcident"
"It's like 'Waterworld' in there," Hannah notes before she, Marnie and Jessa enter what may possibly be the best party ever in Bushwick. Taking place inside a giant warehouse, it's very much a TV Show Party -- you'd never see anything like this in real life -- the kind of thing that has a band playing, DJs, a room full of lesbians dancing and crusty punks all hanging out together. But despite the trappings which threaten to pull this episode of "Girls" into the wacky territory it has gone into here and there throughout the otherwise stellar first season, Lena Dunham and her cohorts keep things on an even keel.
So yes, the massive party is the setting for this episode, and it doesn't take long for the girls to be pulled into various dramas. Marnie -- once again looking...

Oh Land has said that she is more concerned that people help the environment than pay for music they download. The 'Son of a Gun' singer, real name Nanna Øland Fabricius, told wotyougot that her dancer roots make her surprised to earn any money from her music. Asked about illicit downloading of her songs, Oh Land said: "I shouldn't be saying it, I always personally just never thought I was going to make any money anyway. I've always, always had this idea and accept that I would always be a poor artist. "I think it's because I was a dancer and if you want to be a dancer, the first thing you've got to accept is that you'll never make any money, and it'll be such tough work, and the only payoff you get is the enjoyment of what you're doing." A year ago, MTV News production assistants Rya Backer and Steven Roberts realized that their devotion to chasing stories was seriously getting in the way of their love lives. That's why they dreamed up "First Date," a regular feature that allows them to get up close and personal to some of our favorite hot new artists.
By Steven Roberts
My First Date with Oh Land was one of my favorites. Not because she was a drop-dead gorgeous Danish songstress, but because we got to make art. Our date was at Color Me Mine in Tribeca, and I was immediately overwhelmed with joy. The shelves were loaded with stuff you can paint ... from dog bowls to dinner plates, and everything in between. What can I say? My apartment was sorely lacking in "painted bulls---."
Anyway, my producer Rya, was adamant that I pick something that both Oh Land and I could paint together.

My First Date with Oh Land was one of my favorites. Not because she was a drop-dead gorgeous Danish songstress, but because we got to make art. Below are this week's ten of our favourite upcoming releases we're tipping for success. Oh Land: 'Sun of a Gun'
Copenhagen-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Oh Land has been causing a stir in the Us with her new single and now has her sights set firmly on our shores. Having racked up over 9.5 million views for the single's video on YouTube, this ethereal piano-pop number will induce much finger-snapping come the summer. The Feeling: 'Set my World on Fire'
The first single to be taken from their upcoming third studio set Together We Were Made, you may recognise the tribal-infused indie-pop track as the official theme tune for the BBC's Cricket World Cup coverage between February and April this year. Yasmin: 'Finish Line' (After Hours Mix)
Glasgow-born Yasmin Shahmir, who featured on Devlin's top 15 hit (more)...

With scandal, sexiness and surprises galore, this week's Gossip Girl was a major improvement from the previous episode, as our official review noted.
The music, as always, set the tone. Leave a comment with songs we're missing, and click to purchase/listen to Gossip Girl music from "Petty in Pink":
The Vaccines - "If You Wanna" Oh Land - "White Nights" The Ting Tings - "Hands" The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - "Safety Dance" The Pierces - "We Are Stars"...

As most of you who read this site regularly know, I'm not a huge fan of reality TV. Even the few reality shows that I like (usually things like "Top Chef" where there's a clear goal and a certain level of ability is required among the participants) I get bored with really quickly. I'm pretty certain that all the reality TV shows on television right now could disappear and I probably wouldn't notice except that Pajiba After Dark would get way shorter certain nights. However, reality TV seems to love me. Since I moved to Miami more and more reality series are being filmed here, which led to me actually encountering part of the cast of "Jersey Shore" while out one night which is, thus far, the closest I have come to the proverbial sausage being made. Tomorrow morning or mostly likely later this evening, I will be getting closer...

Paula Deen, she of the feathered hair, love of butter, ham promotion, and a growing Food Network empire, is apparently kind of a fun chick to hang out with. This past weekend was the South Beach Food and Wine Festival which I completely ignored because I don't feel like spending upwards of $250 to watch celebrity "chefs" cook in front of large crowds of tipsy tourists. However, I found out today that Paula Deen's presentation featured lots of wine, and subsequently Ms.Deen herself licking cream off the abs of "Restaurant: Impossible" star and former Pajiba After Dark header boy Robert Irvine before deciding to ride him like a pony. After the antics of Charlie Sheen this past week, it's kind of nice to see a television personality getting tipsy and acting like a silly college girl rather than like an egotistic asshole with a rage problem. And, accordingly, Ms.

Epic Records
It’s hard to open a magazine these days and not see a picture of Oh Land, the Danish electropop singer whose American debut will be released next month by Epic Records (a four-track Ep came out last fall). The 25-year-old has appeared on the cover of Time Out, been featured in Vogue and cool-kid magazines like Paper and Interview. Next week, she’ll appear on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”
