Here at Asian Movie Pulse, we have had a fantastic year of covering manga and manhwa (and a healthy dose of light novels) as we continue to expand our coverage of the medium. 2023 marked a remarkable year of new titles that deeply engrossed us in the pages throughout the year. The most significant change is coming from the heavier move towards publishing Manhwa titles, marking the first year we include South Korean comics as a major consideration for what made the past year so memorable.
Counting down to our favorite manga release of the year, these 20 titles highlight the best manga and manhwa releases of 2023.
20. Pandora Seven by Yuta Kayashima
“Scale, wing, vine, hair…none of that mattered to Lia, because her friends and mother loved her. She lived happily and peacefully—an almost worry-free existence. As the sole member of humania on the island, of course she dreamed about meeting others of her kind.

Particular stories within manga tend to burrow under the reader's skin by exploring uncomfortable themes steeped in violence, tragedy, and suffering. These works offer a unique catharsis and, when executed with sincerity and skill, allow readers to look inward and see elements of humanity that are difficult to approach yet enriching to contemplate.
We look at 20 dark manga worthy of challenging the reader, offering depth within their complex themes. In no specific order, we have handpicked these twenty titles for their ability to navigate uncomfortable themes with the needed skill to make the work redemptive.

Capturing the anxiety that can come with isolation and throwing in a teenage masturbatory fantasy turned nightmare, Ryo Minenami's “Boys Abyss” is an uncomfortable read. Yet, for those who seek challenging subject matter with a tinge of intense psychological drama (looking at you fans of Inio Asano & Shuzo Oshimi), the manga packs quite a wallop within its opening volume. While many will appreciate the book at face value, its sensational premise/dark romantic focus, there are...

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.
In no particular order, here are 12 outstanding single-volume manga releases...

“The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.” (Viz Media)

A single-volume release from the creator of “Chainsaw Man”, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s “Look Back” is an introspective look at the creator’s past, the art of manga, and the work involved to make a name for yourself. Additionally, the release explores the complex relationship between two creators whose lives are drastically changed through their shared passion. The book itself has seen its fair share of accolades in its native Japan, and the success of “Chainsaw Man” makes Fujimoto’s more nuanced project perfectly poised for a warm introduction to Western audiences.

As a general rule, it is considered bad form to dive into someone’s personal life as a premise to frame their work– merit and explorations should be focused on the art itself unless the said project is based solely on personal experience. However, it will be difficult for many readers to push aside the fact that Akana Torikai is married to mangaka Inio Asano, a mangaka who has had a longer and more prominent career (at...

There is an existing sentiment that if you want to kill enjoyment in the thing you love, do it as a career, and although this statement seems counter intuitive and situational, work has the ability to destroy a passion. With that in mind, “Downfall” acts as a upsetting meditation of this sentiment, with the protagonist (who bares a striking resemblance to the mangaka) finding himself completely withdrawn from his work. This withdrawal comes from a troubled relationship, past memories of failure, and disenfranchisement in what defines popular content. This disconnect will find some familiarity with fans of artistic mediums,...
