After a healthy run of comedy and genre work, Karen Gillan felt it was time for a dramatic change.
Shortly before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s whirlwind press tour, Gillan returned to Australia where she shot Thor: Love and Thunder a couple years earlier, and joined the cast of Adam Cooper’s Sleeping Dogs, led by Russell Crowe. The twisty psychological crime drama follows Crowe’s retired homicide detective Roy Freeman, as his recovery from an experimental Alzheimer’s procedure prompts him to re-approach a murder case from a decade earlier. Gillan plays the enigmatic Laura Baines, the right-hand researcher to Marton Csokas’ Dr. Joseph Wieder and his memory reconsolidation therapy thesis.
When Professor Wieder (Csokas) winds up dead, Freeman (Crowe) takes a newfound interest in Baines (Gillan) when he revisits the case a decade later. Sleeping Dogs plays with the tropes of the femme fatale through Baines,...

Oh, the drama of living in a superhero universe. Just when it seems you find the woman of your dreams, she is tossed off a cliff by her murderous, tyrannical space alien father in exchange for a magical rock. Then, after a five-year period when half of the universe is dead, you find a new job restoring their lives. In so doing, however, your old beloved is rescued from an alternate timeline. Only now, she has no memory of you or your time together. What else is there to do but turn to drink and listen to nostalgic songs on your still-working Zune?
This is what happened to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) over the course of several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He and the dangerous assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) began to form an uneasy romance in 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy," and she was brutally murdered by her...

If you’re one of the many folks who flocked to see Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3, you no doubt wiped away a tear or ten when you watched Rocket Raccoon’s tragic backstory play out. But, is his origin the most traffic MCU Original of them all? Indeed, the MCU has dominated cinema for the past decade and a half and has given audiences some of the most memorable on-screen moments in history. Fans have developed close personal relationships with the heroes and characters to the point that they feel as if they’re real people existing in the real world. While that may not be true, it’s still a testament to how emotionally powerful the MCU has become that it allows audiences to empathize and care about completely fictional beings.

The arrival of a new Guardians Of The Galaxy movie isn’t just a cause for celebration because the MCU bestowing the world with another hand-crafted mixtape of forgotten bangers and impeccable vibes, perfectly curated to soundtrack the exploits of Peter Quill and pals. The first film’s soundtrack sold over 2.5 million copies; its follow-up soundtrack went Top 5 in the Billboard 200 charts. These mixes have become cultural events in and of themselves.
Now, here comes Awesome Mix Vol. 3, the final playlist for the Guardians’ farewell tour – once again stacked with hits we’ll be spinning for months on end. Chris Pratt has fully grown into a hunky action-lead, but Dave Bautista’s beefy Drax is the scene stealer as he flexes his comedy chops
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has now been going for almost a decade, long enough for its star Chris Pratt to have fully grown into his hunky action-lead image and leave behind the puppyish comedy turn from TV’s Parks and Recreation that got him hired in the first place. With Pratt’s lovable hero Quill addicted to 70s/80s hits on his vintage Walkman, the franchise has also gone on long enough to reportedly trigger a massive global sales upturn in audio cassettes, although it’s an iPod we see in this film. And it’s been with us long enough for writer-director James Gunn to experience a complete cancelling-uncancelling cycle, fired and then forgiven for offensive tweets.

In another sign of the return to China for Marvel after a long drought, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been set for a day-and-date release on May 5. The James Gunn-directed finale in the series is due to hit North American cinemas that same day while international rollout will begin on May 3. (Check out the new China poster below.)
This marks the third Marvel title to secure a theatrical release in China following a three-and-a-half year period during which no movies featuring a Marvel character gained entry to the world’s second largest box office market. Last month, Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania became the first titles in since Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019, and Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame in April that same year.

Marvel Comics "Guardians of the Galaxy" #1, available April 12, 2023, is written by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and illustrated by Kev Walker, with a great new line of variant covers:
"...one year ago, the 'Guardians' were on top of the galaxy. After the 'Infinity Wars' had torn them apart, 'Peter Quill' and his surrogate family had slowly begun pulling themselves back together again and healing in response to then-recent threats: The near-resurrection of 'Thanos', the return of the 'Church of Universal Truth' and the reborn 'Olympian Gods'.
"In the wake of concurrent major cosmic upheavals, the team emerged from all these trials in its largest, most powerful, and most optimistic incarnation yet. This re-energized era of the team culminated with the Guardians joining forces with the 'Mutants of Krakoa' to save the galaxy from the demonic entity 'Dormmamu'.

Exclusive: The premiere of Animal Control has laughed up a streaming record for Fox.
After three days of delayed viewing, the episode delivered 4.5M multi-platform viewers, which is a 114% increase from its live + same-day audience (2.1M).
About 1.3M of those viewers came from Hulu and Fox Now, making the episode Fox’s most-streamed scripted debut ever. The premiere of Animal Control, which stars Joel McHale, surpassed both 9-1-1: Lone Star and The Last Man on Earth for the streaming title.
In delayed viewing, the episode has also become Fox’s most-watched comedy telecast since the 2021 series finale of Last Man Standing (excluding NFL lead-ins).
Animal Control follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale will play Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is...

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be pulling at our heartstrings when it hits theaters this summer, kicking off what promises to be an exciting year for blockbusters filled with a bunch of highly anticipated movies. Of course, it wouldn't be a Marvel movie without a plethora of merchandise accompany it. Considering this is meant to be the last ride for this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, you can bet that Disney will be going all out, especially with a flashback to the adorable baby version of the feisty Rocket Raccoon making an appearance.
Hasbro's Marvel Legends line of action figures always honors the latest Marvel Studios movie with a line of new toys (via GameRant), and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is no different. However, this is the first time that the line of figures has actually had such a uniform appearance, and we mean that literally.

This post contains spoilers for "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." Please proceed with caution.
Back in 2019, "Avengers: Endgame" featured one of the boldest moves the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever done: They decided to permanently write off two of its biggest heroes, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Considering most franchises' general tendency to keep things going for as long as possible, the fact that they went through on such a major change to the status quo (and have stuck to it in the years since) feels like minor miracle.
In the years since, they've given us a replacement of sorts for Steve Rogers, letting Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson take over his Captain America role. There hasn't really been a clear-cut replacement for Iron Man, however. Ironheart in "Wakanda Forever" is probably the closest to him from a technical point of view, but who's going...

Before Rihanna took the stage for the highly anticipated halftime show, Peter Quill and the crew of the Benatar were tapped as her opening act at the "Super Bowl" this year. Unfortunately, they didn't travel from Knowhere and land the ship in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona to rock the house. Instead, Marvel Studios unveiled a brand new trailer for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
Considerably less somber and ominous than the first preview for the upcoming Phase Five film, the latest one brings us back to the joke-cracking badasses that we've come to know and love over the past decade. However, as this is the final chapter of this story with some extremely high stakes, it definitely sets the tone for an epic conclusion for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Rocket, and Groot.

Parting is such sweet sorrow. After more than a decade of laughter, thrills, and some great tunes, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has finally coming to an end. The live-action cinematic adventures of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) will close out with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," launching into theaters on May 5, 2023, and audiences should be prepared to bring tissues. Gunn has promised that the trilogy-ender is a real tear-jerker, because some of the Guardians are going to end up six feet under.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will follow the Guardians on their own for the first time since the tragic events "Avengers: Endgame", and they'll be battling the High Evolutionary (the eternally excellent Chukwudi Iwuji), an evil scientist who probably had something to do with Rocket's experimental and painful origin.

Sometimes it's hard to remember that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't always the mega-franchise it is now. Before all the Disney+ shows, theme parks, and "Avengers"-themed cruises, there was the humble beginning of Jon Faverau's "Iron Man." In what would end up being the blueprint for many more MCU movies to come, the first "Iron Man" film worked thanks to the passionate team behind it, and perhaps the most critical part of it all was the casting of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark. The actor would become synonymous with the character of Iron Man, and while the casting looks like a no-brainer now, back when the MCU was just starting, Downey was apparently the biggest risk when making the movie.
Needless to say, the risk paid off in spades. Downey's Iron Man would continue to grow and evolve, with new emotional weight behind every subsequent movie the character appeared in.

Exclusive: Joel McHale got up close and personal with a baby cougar for Fox‘s Super Bowl ad promoting the network’s new comedy series Animal Control.
The spot, which will air during Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, pokes fun at the cost of an ad for the big game as McHale quips: “Wanna hear something crazy? This ad cost 3 million, and only half of that went toward my hair.”
He adds: “And everything you’ve heard is true. Attractive cougars in your area want to meet you.”
His co-star (the baby cougar) sits peacefully in his arms as he tells viewers to tune in Thursdays at 9 p.m. for the show. In an outtake, McHale jokes that Fox only gave the show 15 seconds for their ad, which, coincidentally, is “the maximum amount of time you can hold a cougar before it decides to maul you.

It seems like James Gunn is ready to make superhero fans across the globe cry their faces off because the trailer for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is bringing equal parts hype hero action and devastating emotional moments that seem like audiences will be blubbering messes by the end of it. It's the final chapter for the galaxy's favorite intergalactic a-holes, following their recent appearance in "Thor: Love and Thunder" and the delightfully ridiculous "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
Set after the events of 2017's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,", the second film in Marvel's Phase Five is likely the last we'll see of Peter "Star-Lord" Quill (Chris Pratt), this version of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).
We already knew from Gunn's comments at the "Guardians of the Galaxy...

The Guardians of the Galaxy are back.
The first trailer for James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is here, and it’s a doozy. Set to a lushly orchestrated version of English indie band Spacehog’s “In the Meantime,” which indicates that Quill’s Zune has some songs that stretch beyond the 1970s-era classics of the first two movies, the clip is equal parts thrilling and emotional.
Gunn’s patented, rollicking “Guardians of the Galaxy” tone is very much in place – we love their candy-colored spacesuits and a multi-armed Groot firing weapons. But there is an undercurrent of extreme melancholy as well. Gunn has said that this entry is devoted to Rocket’s backstory, and it seems like it could be the end of the road for our favorite wise-cracking raccoon. (Side note: Who is his otter friend!?)

This article contains major spoilers for "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
It's difficult to imagine any Christmas gift from Marvel Studios ever topping the glorious Rogers: The Musical Broadway number from "Hawkeye," but "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" comes very close. Going with the Guardians for an amusing little holiday one-off makes the most sense, given that they're the most compelling family in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A group of outcasts who come together from all corners of the cosmos to support one another are the perfect fodder for something cute like this, especially with one of their own feeling a bit dour.
Seeing as how Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) lost his mother at a young age, learned that his biological father (Kurt Russell) was a planetary genocidal maniac, lost his flawed yet loving adoptive father (Michael Rooker), was partly responsible for the Blip, and had...

Remember when there used to be an actual transition period between Halloween and the holiday season, allowing all of us to take a deep breath, reset ourselves, and enjoy some turkey and stuffing before pivoting towards the mad dash for gifts and eggnog and nonstop anxiety and stress? Me neither. That's exactly why we're only a week away(!) from the release of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," the studio's latest live-action short set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will feature the franchise's most endearing found family on the hunt for some festive cheer. It's a match made in heaven, really.
Longtime fans, especially those who've become accustomed to being spoon-fed on how each installment of the MCU is connected to the next, might feel tempted to view these shorts as inessential or, worse, "filler." After all, these shorts aren't big enough to play in theaters like traditional...

It makes sense that Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis the empath in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, would zero in on the feelings that Disney+‘s upcoming holiday special unwraps.
Written/directed by James Gunn and premiering on Friday, Nov. 25, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special finds the titular heroes on a mission to make Christmas unforgettable for a melancholy Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). To that end, Mantis and Drax (played by Dave Bautista) are dispatched to Earth in search of the perfect present. And as revealed in the trailer for the holiday special, that gift apparently will...

Fox has rounded out the cast for Animal Control. Michael Rowland, Grace Palmer, Gerry Dee, Kelli Ogmundson and Alvina August join Joel McHale, Vella Lovell and Ravi Patel in the upcoming straight-to-series workplace comedy.
Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling, the comedy series follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not.
Rowland will portray Fred “Shred” Taylor, the optimistic rookie Animal Control officer and Frank’s (McHale) new partner. The former professional snowboarder blew out his knee three months shy of the Olympics, but even that hasn’t soured his upbeat outlook on life.
Palmer will play Victoria Sands, the hedonistic free spirit of the Animal Control officers.

Pop culture baby names are nothing new, but for every set of siblings with relatively common names like Luke and Leia, there's a dozen little kids with painfully specific referential names like Khaleesi or Sansa. During the late 2000s, there was an explosion of fandom-inspired baby names like Bella, Edward, and Hermione, but now it seems like Disney-owned properties have taken the throne as the creative inspiration for new parents.
Thanks to a recent study published by OrganicBabyFormula.com (via Comic Book), one of the Marvel inspired baby names growing in popularity is not a hero like Stark, Parker, or even Banner, but instead the name of the person responsible for destroying half of the universe. That's right, people are increasingly naming their babies "Thanos," after the greatest supervillain in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As of publication, Thanos is the ninth-most-popular baby name inspired by Disney-owned characters, which...

[This story contains spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder.]
For screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, landing Thor: Love and Thunder was the good news in a good news/bad news conversation.
When she booked the job, she had already been in contention to write several Marvel Studios projects, including Black Widow and Hawkeye. In February 2020, she learned that while she hadn’t landed her latest pitch on Captain Marvel II, she’d be teaming with filmmaker Taika Waititi for Love and Thunder, a film she never even pitched for.
After spending a month writing at Marvel’s Burbank headquarters, Robinson — like the rest of the world — was sent home as the coronavirus pandemic spread. Eventually she headed to Australia, where she ran around set with a laptop, reworking scenes on the fly as part of Waititi’s fluid creative process.
