It wasn't that long ago that Marvel Studios' plan to create a closely interconnected movie and TV universe sounded like poppycock. What if one of the films bombed or nobody tuned in for a particular show? For over a decade, the House of Ideas managed to avoid these roadblocks thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's domination of the box office, coupled with the loose -- and, if we're being honest, almost completely one-sided -- ties between the McU's movies and the live-action series produced under the now-defunct Marvel Television banner. It's why few panicked when ABC's "Inhumans" died on the way back to its home planet or Netflix's "Defenders" shows were casually picked off, slasher-style, in the lead-up to Disney+ launching.
However, now that Marvel has consolidated its movie and TV divisions under one roof, we're beginning to see the drawbacks of this approach. It was often near-impossible to...

Pakistani actors Sajal Ali, Kubra Khan, and Mehwish Hayat have spoken out against allegations that they were being used as “honey traps” by the Pakistani army.
Their statements came after a retired Pakistan Army officer named Adil Raja claimed in a YouTube video that some of the country’s female actors were used by the military to trap politicians.
Raja didn’t name any actors but he ended up revealing the actors’ initials.
Soon after the video went viral, social media users were quick to make assumptions that the actors in question are Ali, Khan, and Hayat.
“It is very sad that our country is becoming morally debased and ugly; character assassination is the worst form of humanity and sin,” Ali wrote in a tweet on Monday (2 January).
Khan also responded to the allegations by announcing that she’ll take action against Raja.
“I stayed quiet initially because obviously a...

Actor and campaigner Mehwish Hayat (“Ms. Marvel”) and writer-director Lena Khan (“Never Have I Ever”) have been revealed as the first patrons for charity U.K. Muslim Film (Ukmf).
Ukmf works to change perspectives through championing underrepresented talent and voices, both on-screen and behind the camera and also advises the entertainment industry on how to authentically represent Muslims on-screen.
Hayat, whose hit films in Pakistan include “Actor in Law,” “Punjab Nahi Jaungi,” “Load Wedding” and “Chhalawa,” has widely spoken out about human rights abuses on the global stage and has been particularly vocal about the representation of Muslims in mainstream media.
Hayat said: “Representation of Muslims on-screen is something that I have been tirelessly working to highlight for the past few years. Misrepresentation has done untold damage to us and I sincerely believe has fuelled the rise of Islamophobia. With Ukmf, I look forward to working with the industry to...

Since its June 8 premiere, Disney’s “Ms. Marvel” has audiences and critics (including this one) buzzing about its stunning South Asian representation. Not only does the show center a Pakistani-American Muslim teen, but Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is completely at peace with her hyphenated identity. She loves Bollywood movies and food from the local halal cart, she brings her friends to Eid parties and listens to fusion artists like Swet Shop Boys. Her cultural confidence is mirrored in the show’s production: From music to artwork to language, “Ms. Marvel” is a work of love.
“That comes from many of the people involved in the creative process being from either a Pakistani background or Muslim background — they could directly relate to or were open to learning,” head writer and showrunner Bisha K. Ali told IndieWire. “So all of that felt very natural as we were writing it, as I was putting it all together.

When Bisha K. Ali first expressed interest in “Ms. Marvel,” the project didn’t officially exist.
The British-Pakistani writer and now showrunner was working on “Loki” when she got off-the-record wind of the project, and insisted that the executive producer of “Loki” get her a meeting.
“I knew about Kamala Khan when I picked up the comics in 2014, before I was even a television writer,” Ali told IndieWire via Zoom on the day of the “Ms. Marvel” finale. “I got that meeting and that’s when it kicked off. I was like, ‘I want to do this. I want to pursue this as much as possible.'”
The “Ms. Marvel” writers room was packed with superfans, and one extra special guest even by Marvel standards: comics creator Sana Amanat, whose expertise Ali asked for specifically.
“She didn’t actually join the project until all the scripts were written,” Ali said.

The sixth and final episode of "Ms. Marvel" was released on Disney+ on July 13, and the end-credits scene involved a major MCU cameo with some huge implications for the "Captain Marvel" sequel, "The Marvels." Let's break down just what the ending of "Ms. Marvel" means for the future of the MCU.
During the short scene, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) rests on her bed in her brand-new suit, presumably after a long day of superhero-ing. Her mom (Zenobia Shroff) is heard off screen urging her to finish her science homework. But before she can even crack open her textbook, her bangle lights up mysteriously. Viewers will remember, of course, that the bangle first unlocked Kamala's powers. Her great-grandmother Aisha (Mehwish Hayat) and her fellow Clandestines found the bracelet in a mysterious cave, adorning a severed arm that appeared to be blue (we'll get back to that!).

As Disney+ releases the six episodes of "Ms. Marvel" this summer, Popsugar has exclusive interviews with the cast and creators about making the show come to life. This week, additional photography production designer Natasha Gerasimova chats with Popsugar about episode five, "Time and Again."
Natasha Gerasimova joined the "Ms. Marvel" team pretty late into the process. The show had already been filmed and edited, and the creative team was planning reshoots. Gerasimova tells Popsugar that when she came on board, there was a meeting of the minds to evaluate what needed to change to improve the show.
Gerasimova says the scope of the changes the show's creative team wanted to implement was extensive, so they had to be strategic about what could be re-edited and what they actually needed to reshoot. "The reshoots were pretty massive, so there was quite a big script restructuring, and a lot of episodes were reshuffled,...

Warning: spoilers below for "Ms. Marvel" episode 5.
"Ms. Marvel" has very nearly finished its six-episode run, which means things have been heating up in a lot of major ways. With Kamala Khan's (Iman Vellani) time in Pakistan, it's been hard to keep tabs on Bruno (Matt Lintz) and Kamran's (Rish Shah) stateside antics. Of course, learning more about Kamala's family — especially her great-grandparents, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat) and Hasan (Fawad Khan) — has produced some of the best Marvel television yet. That said, there's quite a bit brewing for Kamran after episode 5, "Time and Again." While the episode was focused...

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the stakes have only been getting greater and greater since Iron Man’s debut in 2008. In Avengers: Endgame, fans saw the culmination of Kevin Feige’s multi-phase master plan, in which every hero across the galaxy came together to defeat their most powerful foe yet: Thanos.
But in Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan’s (Iman Vellani) story brings Marvel back down to Earth — figuratively and literally. Set in Jersey City surrounding a (seemingly) normal Pakistani-American family living in modern-day Earth-616, the Disney+ series sheds light on a more realistic version of our own society within the MCU, giving audiences a glimpse into the normal day-to-day living in the post-Blip aftermath.
And that’s not to say that our titular hero doesn’t see her fair share of action sequences, chase scenes and run-ins with galactic forces throughout the show,...

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Ms. Marvel" episode 5.
"Ms. Marvel" is really the gift that keeps on giving, emerging as an underappreciated yet immensely enjoyable entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Episode 4 ended with an emotional gut-punch, with Kamala (Iman Vellani) being transported back into the past in 1947, and finding herself in front of the last train that left for Karachi that fateful night. Prior to this, Kamala was made familiar with a version of what happened by her Nani, who told her that her mother Aisha (Mehwish Hayat) went missing that night and that she was...

As Disney+ releases the six episodes of "Ms. Marvel" this summer, Popsugar has exclusive interviews with the cast and creators about making the show come to life. This week, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy chats with Popsugar about episode four, "Seeing Red."
It was serendipitous: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy already had two Academy Awards under her belt - from 2012 and 2016, for her documentary shorts - and was thinking about moving into narrative work when her agents told her Marvel was looking for "Ms. Marvel" directors. Both her daughters were fans of the comics, and she thought it would be a great fit.
"I've been creating films and telling stories from around the world about women who have extraordinary abilities like working in healthcare and education and climate change in their communities," she tells Popsugar. "And I just think of them as superheroes without capes."
"Partition and the 1947 story is so ingrained in all of our lives.

Who is the big bad in “Ms. Marvel?”
That hasn’t been fully answered as of Episode 3, “Destined,” but the latest installment introduces the Clandestines, and they’re here to make life a lot harder for Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani).
Viewers last saw Kamala saving a child who fell from great height during the local Eid celebration. As she ran from drones and cars full of Damage Control agents, she’s rescued by Kamran (Rish Shah) and his mother Najma (Nimra Bucha).
It turns out Najma and her friends are a group known as the Clandestines, who hail from another dimension and have lived in exile on Earth for upward of 80 years. They’ve been searching for Kamala’s bangle, which is part of a pair — but using one without the other could be perilous, as the cold open suggests. Back in 1942, they found one in British-occupied India, and Kamala...
