“Seinfeld” was always suspicious of people with two first names. In this instance, he should be comforted, for Heather Courtney has put together a gorgeously shot, thoughtfully paced and inherently powerful documentary that deserves to be seen and talked about.
Dom joined the Michigan National Guard for the money. Cole joined for the camaraderie. These regular 20-year-olds are into tagging derelict structures, listening to music and drinking beer. Moments later, the youngsters are off to Afghanistan to sweep for, and detonate, explosive devices.
The feeling hits home, and there are few sadder realizations than the current disassociation between modern American society and its armed forces. In previous generations, everyone knew at least one person in the armed forces. Now, those with that proximity are...
