This post contains spoilers for "The Marvels."
In "The Marvels," Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau (the latter of whom, we will, in accordance with Kamala Khan, henceforth call "Professor Marvel") do battle with Dar-Benn, a Kree warrior who plans to destroy multiple worlds. It's not a nice thing to do, and it makes sense that our heroes don't want her to do it.
There's just one problem.
Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton, isn't just wrecking planets for fun. We learn quickly that she's using the power of the Quantum Bands — never mind those, they're just a MacGuffin — to remove the atmosphere, the oceans, and even the sun from other inhabited worlds and move them to her own world, Hala, which was left in ruins after Captain Marvel, at the end of her first movie, liberated it from the Supreme Intelligence.

The Kitchen imagines a near-future London where gentrification isn’t achieved just by subtle shifts in planning policy and infrastructure adjustments, but by outright violence from the police. Wait … isn’t that happening already? Perhaps, but right now not with the same brazen brutality in Britain’s capital as is seen in this striking directorial debut for short filmmaker Kibwe Tavares (Jonah) and actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther).
Admittedly, there are not-quite-square corners in the script, by Kaluuya and Joe Murtagh (Calm With Horses), which makes the material feel like it was constructed from a screenwriting flatpack kit, the kind issued from vast, quality-controlled narrative warehouses run by screenwriting workshops and producers keen to plant predictable emotional beats and add “relevance.” But The Kitchen also has plenty of inventive ideas, creates heady atmospheres in both its dark and lighter moments, and features vivid performances with a large ensemble.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Phil Johnston has adapted The Twits, the children’s novel penned by Roald Dahl in the 1980s, into an animated feature set to hit Netflix in 2025.
The pic, which Johnston co-wrote with Meg Favreau, is the first screen adaptation based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name. The novel has been translated into 41 languages and sold 16 million copies worldwide.
With animation by the Brixton-based studio Jellyfish Pictures, the pic follows Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia. But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits to save the city.

Marvel once recruited actor Idris Elba to portray the Asgardian Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a character Elba felt great pride in playing, especially since he believed the character’s role could’ve been expanded on in the superhero franchise.

Elba has portrayed a couple of super-powered characters during his time in the spotlight. The actor initially found himself in his first superhero movie with Thor, where he played the Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall. He was aware that his character only had a small role in the feature. But Elba took the part anyway because he was eager to work with director Kenneth Branagh, who shot the first Thor.
“This is a man that’s an amazing actor. Just hearing him giving his take on how to mold me as an actor.

“Ballers” becomes the second HBO title licensed from Warner Bros. Discovery to debut on Netflix after Issa Rae’s comedy “Insecure” premiered on the service in July. This article contains light spoilers for "Fast X."
When 2019's "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" was first announced, it seemed like a way for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to pull a fast one on the franchise that he was previously part of only as a member of the ensemble. With this spin-off film, it appeared that Johnson was making a bid to move his character of Dss Agent Luke Hobbs into his own multi-movie franchise — and, as extra insurance, he brought reformed "Furious 7" villain Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) along with him.
Though that may have indeed been the idea behind the conception of "Hobbs & Shaw," the movie proved itself to be firmly entrenched within the "Fast & Furious" franchise in many ways. For one, the film features Hobbs, Shaw, and others performing incredible feats of strength and insanity in and out of various vehicles. For another,...

Early on in Rye Lane, it becomes very clear that the audience is in for something special. After meeting at an art exhibition, the two leads formally introduce themselves on a busy corner of the eponymous Peckham high street. “Dom, right? I’m Yas,” says Vivian Oparah, rocking a leopard-print scarf, yellow mac and shocking pink fake-fur bag. “Nice to meet you,” says David Jonsson’s Dom, offering a polite handshake. Yas stares at the outstretched palm, grins and returns a pretend curtsey, then playfully adds a street fist-bump to her chest. It’s sweet and funny, with an easy chemistry, and it perfectly captures the culture clash that Raine Allen-Miller’s directorial debut so singularly dismantles.
Because for David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah, being the stars of a major romcom isn’t something that was ever meant to happen. “On paper, we’re not meant to be romantic leads,...

Onyx Collective is bulking up.
The Disney-owned brand, which is expressly focused on programming from creators of color and other underrepresented voices, announced Saturday a pilot pickup for a Gabourey Sidibe comedy, tentatively titled 1266, and a straight-to-series order for a multi-party documentary series about Black Twitter. The latter is based on Jason Parham’s widely read 2021 Wired article, “A People’s History of Black Twitter.”
The comedy, which hails from corporate cousin 20th Television, is inspired by Sidibe’s life story. The Academy Award-nominated actress, who rose to fame with Lee Daniels’ 2009 film Precious, will star as Gabby Brixton. In the pilot, Brixton’s life is believed to be aimless ― she’s living with her mom and making half-hearted attempts to become a singer/model. When she’s fired from yet another job, she turns to phone sex. What initially seems like a quick way to make money becomes a...

When Ezra Furman first heard Transformer, Lou Reed’s louche, bristling second album, it was as though she’d found her way out of a locked room. “Who I thought Lou Reed was [when I was] in high school became, like, ‘Oh, I’ll follow that. That’s a way to go.’” The seminal 1972 record – which celebrates its 50th anniversary today – was to become a touchstone for Furman’s own subversive work.
You can hear it in her sound. The raw crackle. The often distorted guitars. The slightly haughty vocals. Reed’s fingerprints are all over Furman’s music. And, in her own words, Transformer “had a lot to do with being publicly androgynous and queer”. Furman, who came out as a trans woman last year and is bisexual, has in the past called Reed “an ideal figure to me”. In fact, Reed’s sound and philosophy spoke to Furman so much that,...

A sprig of roaring power emo with your grime, madam? Side of jazz soul? Dash of playlist indie? The modern Reading Festival is an eclectic beast. For the first 45 or so years since one of the oldest existing popular music festivals settled in Reading, through periods of prog, hard rock, metal and indie dominance, it acted as the place that anyone who wasn’t interested in pop music could make their summer second home. Since around 2018, though, it’s faced an identity crisis. What do you do when your core niche – rock music – no longer sells the tickets you have to shift?
Reading & Leeds’s answer has been an attempt to become all festivals to all people – well, all glitter-smothered students clothed largely in netting. The 2022 festival, as a result, resembles three different festivals for the price of one. Friday is akin to a condensed Wireless, headed by rap and grime but accepting all-comers.

Keeping cool should look cool. That’s the right attitude for finding the right summer hat. Just as with sunglasses, you’re faced with tons of options when it comes to finding the best men’s hats this season: classic caps, trendy bucket hats, fancy fedoras — the list goes on. One way to find easy inspiration is by looking at stylish Hollywood stars who use the shade-giving accessory to shield them from the sun (or paparazzi flashbulbs) or wear hats as a fashionable finish to red carpet ensembles and casual outfits alike.
Newsie caps have been spotted on actors including Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Idris Elba and Troy Kotsur (who even wore one while accepting his Oscar for best supporting actor), and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone — stars included — who hasn’t covered up a messy mop with a snapback. And Pharrell,...
