After discussing the year’s breakthrough directors, it’s time to traverse to the other side of the camera. Whether it’s their very first performances or a talent who’s been seen in a variety of features, yet, for whatever reason, hadn’t been allowed to command the screen, this year’s breakthrough actors are an eclectic group. Ranging from Hollywood offerings to minuscule independent dramas, check out our rundown.
Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz (Little Men)
Taking the concept of “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and conveying it through the economic realities of gentrification, Ira Sachs‘ Little Men is an affecting look at what happens when a friendship can fracture due to external pressures. Playing the two friends at the center, Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz honestly communicate the experience of an innocent relationship as they both explore what they want out of their teenage life. Barbieri, in particular,...

I am not a kid and don’t have kids, but the Internet tells me that Hatchimals, from Spin Master, is the toy craze of the holiday season. Each Hatchimal comes within its own egg, from which it slowly emerges as its owner takes care of it. The toy’s massive sales have created a scarcity that has driven up prices on the secondary market.
How did Spin Master achieve such a hit? If you ask the company’s employees, YouTube played a huge role. In an interview with Money, Spin Master co-founder Anton Rabie said a lot of the credit for the Hatchimals craze belongs to the YouTube unboxers who played with the toy shortly after its launch. In a separate piece in Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, Spin Master head of robotics James Martin noted that the Hatchimals design was partially inspired by those same unboxers.

Whit Stillman has done this awards season thing before. Back in 1990, the first-time filmmaker was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his script for “Metropolitan,” a comedy of manners about a group of young Manhattanites lolling their way through a series of debutante galas and in-home gatherings during the holiday season. Stillman didn’t win – the award went to Bruce Joel Rubin for “Ghost” – but he still looks back on that period of his life with fondness.
“I remember going to my nominees luncheon and all the people were saying, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t get it. Just don’t worry, there’s no chance,'” Stillman recently told IndieWire. “And that was good, because I didn’t have to worry about writing any acceptance speeches. Then I thought, ‘But what if, what if you get it and I have to go up and say something, what am I going to say?...

For Martin Scorsese, “Silence” is not just another movie. The film based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel of the same name has been a passion project for the filmmaker and high on his list of priorities ever since he first read the book. The story follows two 17th century Jesuit priests (played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield) who face violence and persecution as they travel through Japan to spread Christianity and locate their mentor (Liam Neeson).
