One of the best parts of the Hot Docs Film Festival is its ability to bring exotic images from the far corners of the planet to Canada. Over the years there have been films about pirates in Somalia, child armies running wild in Columbia, and sauna culture in Finland. Enter a new tale: an explosively colourful, unusual, and even baffling visual feast from India called "Kings of the Wind & Electric Queens."
The setting is The Sonepur Fair, an Indian region that borders Nepal. It's dusty, humid and hot, and the countryside is a little rundown. The rivers Ganges and Gandak run along the fairgrounds, where hundreds of pilgrims wash and converse. While it offers a midway, dancing, singing and motor sports, it's not the most modern-looking of events; think traditional India meets "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."
The fair takes place every November, on the full moon day of Kartika Purnima.

The 9th annual Lausanne Underground Film Festival may just run for a mere five days in Switzerland on Oct. 20-24, but it hits with the force of a 10p-ton megaton bomb over that time period, packing in so much mind-boggling underground madness it’ll make your head explode.
Every year, the fest feels like 5 or 6 festivals crammed into one. There’s the fest that pays homage to the history of experimental filmmaking, there are the retrospectives of several cult festivals, a feature film competition section, a short film competition section and more.
Three filmmakers are especially getting major retrospective love this year. First, there’s legendary Canadian experimental filmmaker Michael Snow who will be in attendance at screenings of his classic films Wavelength, <–> and La région centrale, plus several of his other short films.
Also being feted are German extreme horror filmmaker Jörg Buttgereit, who will attend screenings of his classic Nekromantik,...

The 39th annual Festival du Nouveau Cinema is set to run in Montreal on Oct 13-24. But, within the overall, massive festival is the Fnc Lab, the avant-garde and experimental section that will be having screenings and live film performances every night on Oct. 14-22.
This year, the Fnc Lab is showcasing two retrospectives; plus, a short film program of strictly 16mm films, films from the Korean Jeonju Digital Project, four feature-length projects and several special one-of-a-kind performances.
The retrospectives are of two key American women experimental filmmakers. First, in conjunction with the Double Negative Collective, the fest presents a career overview of Chick Strand, the eminent ethnographic filmmaker who sadly passed away last year at the age of 77.
Then, there’s also a retrospective of playful avant-garde filmmaker Marie Losier, who is well known for her collaborations with and film portraits of key underground figures like George Kuchar, Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge.

The 2nd annual Oakland Underground Film Festival, which will run Sept. 23-25, has a definite theme this year. And that theme is funk! The all-documentary festival features profiles of music professors, avant-garde musicians, funky music histories, female Bolivian wrestlers and the history of sleazy cinema.

Other documentaries in the lineup are Mark Landsman’s Thunder Soul, about an inspirational music teacher; Stascha Bader’s Jamaican music history Rocksteady: Roots of Reggae; plus, a profile of female Bolivian wrestler Carmen Rose the Champion, Mamachas Del Ring directed by Betty M. Park.
