The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

Three of the most celebrated stories in Batman‘s long comic book history are being adapted into a new medium. Entertainment Weekly has announced that Titan Books are releasing a series of novels based on the Dark Knight’s adventures. Specifically, these are The Killing Joke by Christa Faust and Gary Phillips, Court of Owls by Greg Cox and Mad Love by Paul Dini and Pat Cadigan.
Pretty much every Batman fan will be familiar with The Killing Joke. Written by comic book legend Alan Moore, it’s often considered the definitive tale of the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime’s rivalry. It’s also been the cause of a lot of controversy over the years, though, due to the violent fate that befalls Barbara Gordon in the story. Hopefully, the novel can find a way to give Batgirl’s arc a lot more agency.

I always feel as though I need a shower after reading Peepland. This is not the nostalgic 1980′s of a John Hughes movie, this is a dark, seedy underbelly peopled by bad people doing very bad things, and good people doing bad things for good reason. Or so they think. Sex worker Roxy and boyfriend Nick, in dragging that tape with the murder on it all over town, have inadvertently escalated events as rich slime ball Simon Went tries to find them, killing everyone in his way. There’s a whole lot more going on than that of course, but Roxy and Nick are the hooks on which everything else hangs.

Three issues behind us, and things have really started to move forward at speed. Although the central story follows sex worker Roxy and on/off boyfriend Nick Zero, and the bad guys in pursuit of the tape they possess showing a murder, the book excels by juggling this with all those other characters and subplots. The central plot is like the middle of a wheel, with all the subplots moving outwards from it. Roxy with Nick (and Kat), Aiesha with son Zee, Simon Went protecting his son, and a handful of other minor characters coming and going. It’s a well written tapestry of a place and time that although not that long ago, seems to be of a completely different age.

The first two issues of this title really took me by surprise as I was kind of expecting not to like it. T&A has always sold to a certain demographic, and I thought this was a case of making an easy buck or two. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Yes, the book has very adult themes, nudity and sex, but it is a realistic sex industry we see here. Seedy, dangerous, but made up in part by ordinary people like you and I. Christa Faust, co-writer with Gary Phillips, was around in that 80′s New York sex industry, so you know it’s as authentic as it comes.

Sex sells, right? Well, that’s what Titan and Hard Case Crime are hoping with the launch of this new series. Co-written by Christa Faust, who as a former fetish model and dominatrix knows of what she speaks, and Gary Phillips, another prose crime fiction writer. This is very much Faust’s baby, set as it is in mid-1980′s Times Square, New York, the exact time and place Faust was manning those same peep booths. The characters are also based on real people she knew and interacted with, so Peepland sure won’t lack for authenticity. I’m reviewing the first two issues together, which should give a good feel of how the book will be.

Sins of the Father, which was preceded by The Zodiac Paradox and The Burning Man, is the third and final book of author Christa Faust’s Fringe prequel trilogy.
Each book of the Fringe trilogy has focused on a different character and explored the events in their lives leading up to the series. The Zodiac Paradox followed Walter Bishop and The Burning Man told Olivia Dunham’s story. This third book focuses on Peter Bishop and to be honest, I was anticipating that it would be hard to get through. The series never really implied that Peter had any involvement or knowledge of Fringe related events (beyond the obvious one that I won’t spoil) prior to the start of the series. So I was left wondering what kind of story could be told with those creative constraints. Turns out…a pretty good one.

The Burning Man is the second Fringe novel by Christa Faust, the first being The Zodiac Paradox which I reviewed here previously, and it focuses on a young Olivia Dunham in the days before joining Fringe Division.
As a child, Olivia Dunham is “Subject 13,” exposed to the experimental drug Cortexiphan. It has strange effects upon her—effects that manifest when her stepfather assaults her mother—with dire consequences.
All of her life, Olivia hides the strange things Cortexiphan has done to her. But the older she gets, the more difficult it becomes to suppress them. And when faced with a life-or-death situation, she can no longer deny her true nature. For if she does, someone close to her will die.
Unfortunately, unlike the first book, I found this one a little harder to get through. While I do really like the character of Olivia…Walter Bishop (the focus of the...

The critically acclaimed Fringe television series explores the dramatic and grotesque as impossible crimes are investigated by the government’s shadowy Fringe Division, established when Special Agent Olivia Dunham enlisted institutionalized “fringe” scientist Walter Bishop and his globe-trotting son, Peter, to help in investigations that defy all human logic – and the laws of nature.
Author Christa Faust (Choke Hold, Supernatural) is working hand-in-hand with the television writers to create new adventures uncovering the secrets of the series. The first novel revealed how Walter Bishop and William Bell discovered the drug Cortexiphan–and the alternate universe! Fringe – The Zodiac Paradox
In 1974, University students Walter Bishop and William Bell test an exotic chemical compound, attempting to link their subconscious minds. The result is beyond all expectations—a rip in space, opening the way between two universes. Through the rift comes a menace unlike any our world has ever imagined, and it falls to Bishop, Bell, and their ally Nina Sharp to stop him.

I love Fringe. It ended earlier this year, but unlike other sci-fi shows with low ratings on Fox…it actually got to finish off its story. I do miss it though, the world of Walter Bishop, Olivia Dunham, and Peter Bishop was such a rich one that I feel, had plenty of stories left to tell.
So when this novel showed up at my door courtesy of the kind folks at Titan Books I began reading it immediately.
“In 1971 university students Walter Bishop and William Bell use an exotic chemical compound to link their subconscious minds. Unexpectedly, they open a rip in space through which comes a menace unlike any our world has ever seen – the Zodiac Killer. His singular goal is death, and it falls to Bishop, Bell, and Nina Sharp to stop him.”
“The Zodiac Paradox” is the first of three official standalone novels written by Christa Faust.

Drawn to investigate a case of slaughtered Mexican immigrants trying to cross the border, Sam and Dean Winchester are tossed into the supernatural world of Aztec gods and soul-eating demons. With this new threat, the brothers must follow the lead of hunter and biker Xochi Cazadora if they have any hope of saving the world… again.
It is obvious that author Christa Faust is a big fan of the television show. From listing off the Iron Maiden and AC/DC songs that Dean is blasting in the Impala, to Dean’s frequent use of the word “gank” when referring to killing demons, the book blends in perfectly with the series.
The story takes place during Season 6, and without going into specific spoilers, Sam acts the same way he did at the start of the season. His actions were calculated, but lacked emotion and moral judgment. Sam only saw the objective...

Written by Christa Faust, this book takes place during season 6 of Supernatural, between 'Caged Heat’ and ‘Appointment in Samara’ and covers an unseen episode of the hit series. The coyote in the title refers to the people who help illegal immigrants across the border between Mexico and America. The storyline is a simple one. A beautiful woman, who transforms into a terrifying monster that’s all teeth and claws, is brutally murdering illegal Mexican immigrants and the border control agents there to prevent illegals from getting into America.
At first they seem like random attacks, but then brothers Sam and Dean establish a link and joining forces with a pretty, pint-sized Aztec warrior by the name of Xochi Cazadora (the second name means huntress) they try to track down the person they call the Borderwalker before she can cause any more harm. But the Borderwalker is no ordinary woman.

Hard Case Crime has been described as ‘the best new American publisher to appear in the last decade, and with their list of authors, it’s easy to see why. Their bestselling book is Stephen King’s The Colorado Kid (my treasured copy is encased in bubble wrap and a sturdy envelope so it won’t get damaged), but they also boast some wonderful talent including Ray Bradbury, Lawrence Block and Robert B Parker.
As you can tell from that list, Hard Case Crime only publishes the best writers and Christa Faust definitely falls into that category. She’s been nominated for a prestigious Edgar award and won a Spinetingler award in the ‘Rising Star’ category.
Christa Faust is the first woman to join the ranks of Hard Case Crime’s authors and this is her second book with them - if you want to know how the hero of...

If you're missing your weekly Winchester fix as much as we are, this may be just a thing to ease those "Supernatural" withdrawal symptoms before Season 7 premieres on Friday, September 23. "Coyote's Kiss" by Christa Faust, is a brand new official "Supernatural" novel that'll let you in on a hunt that we didn't get to see on-screen this season.
"Coyote's Kiss" takes place between the Season 6 episodes "Caged Heat" and "Appointment in Samarra" -- meaning it's after Crowley's death, but before Dean managed to get Sam's soul back. The Winchesters get word of a truck found by the side of the road, filled with the violently killed bodies of undocumented Mexican immigrants.
We rarely see Sam and Dean outside the lower 48, but for this investigation, they cross the border into Mexico... with the help of a "tattoed, pistol-packing bandita on a motorcycle" named Xochi Cazadora. The hunt leads them to tangle...
