Plot: Cinderella is pushed too far by her evil stepsisters and stepmother, which causes her to switch out her glass shoes and use the assistance of her Fairy Godmother to seek bloody vengeance.
Review: Everyone knows what they’re in for when it comes to these movies at this point, right? I don’t need to lay out the schpeal about public domain horror? Good, because it seems as though these films are here to stay. And in instances like this, I kind of get it. A twisted take on a tale that’s been told a thousand times? We saw Seth Grahame-Smith do something similar with his Pride, Prejudice and Zombies and even Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. So it’s not like this is a brand-new concept. The real question remains: how well does this film do with transforming the Cinderella story into one of horror?

There is something about the period of the Napoleonic Wars and the personality of Napoleon Bonaparte himself that keeps world-renowned filmmakers returning to the subject. Maybe it's the aesthetics of the early 19th century and the epic battles of the time. Maybe it's the fascination of the life of the great French general and emperor that ambitious filmmakers are drawn to.
Whatever the reason, each of these films either failed commercially or received mixed reviews from critics. Abel Gance's Napoleon, Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace and Waterloo, Peter Weir's Master and Commander, and of course Ridley Scott's recent Napoleon – despite epic scales, a talented cast and crew, and sometimes even a great script, all of the above films failed in one way or another.

It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge” a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.
Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids on Hulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.
We wanted to “[give] them permission to explore the cruelty of their characters,” creator Quinn Shephard said to IndieWire. In Episode 2, “The John Gotti of Seven Oaks,” a few of the teen characters explain how their ultimate goal is to become girlfriends for NY gangsters like John Gotti, and viewers get...

Released theatrically November 22, 2023, director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" feature, starring Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Fantastic Four”) earned Oscar nominations for ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Visual Effects’, with Scott now readying his director’s cut, with a streaming runtime of more than four hours:
"...the film is a personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of the addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, 'Josephine'.

Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

The new Hulu series Under the Bridge is infuriating. That’s not to say the series is not well done or crafted—in fact, far from it. This is bold storytelling that challenges the viewer to rethink their misconceptions. The result is appointment-viewing television that, by the end of the series, showcases some uncommonly powerful performances.
No, it’s infuriating because of what transpires from “actual” events. It’s tragic and horrific, and words cannot adequately describe the atrocities that occurred in the small, picturesque seaside town in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada. Under the Bridge is where the key players wish the story stayed, never seeing the light of day.
Under the Bridge follows the heartbreaking story of Reena Virk (newcomer Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old high school student in Saanich. Born in a proud East Indian and devout Jehovah’s Witness family, Reena is rebelling against her tight-knit community. Reena...

Deep into Hulu’s Under the Bridge, author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.
It’s a big ask considering the subject in question has been charged with murder — but potentially a worthy one too, not least because the accused is just a teenager. Unfortunately, it’s also one Under the Bridge does not actually have the nerve to tackle head-on. Despite some moving performances (particularly from its young cast), the writing ultimately proves too vague and too muddled in its messaging to shed new light on much of anything.

A new actress has joined the Chicago P.D. cast and is featured in upcoming episodes.
It’s also worth noting that she shares the screen with Tracy Spiridakos, who is leaving the show this season.
Tracy has played Detective Hailey Upton for many years, but it was revealed that the character will soon leave Chicago.
The new season of Chicago P.D. has not yet addressed the upcoming Upton exit, but narrative seeds will likely be revealed soon.
In the meantime, Season 11 rolls on, with the finale coming up this May. The season will seem short because it is only 13 episodes long.
Several Chicago P.D. cast members also posted on social media about already missing Tracy as she films her final episodes.

Although 2024 marks another year where I won’t make it to SXSW in person, I’m lucky enough to have access to the majority of short films screening at the festival, and so have binge-watched my way through them over the last week. Animation undoubtedly reigns supreme this year, with half of my 10 favourites being animated pieces, but as always at SXSW, there’s a diverse programme of films, from moving docs to Wtf classics.
Here are the 10 titles that caught my attention in the 2024 line-up:
A Crab in the Pool – Alexandra Myotte & Jean-Sébastien Hamel
A truly surprising short, A Crab in the Pool initially sucks you in with its strange introduction to the world of two siblings left to fend for themselves on a hot summer’s day, before leaving you reeling from the gut-punch impact of its narrative. Reminiscent of a contemporary Mike Judge animation, but with a surreal twist,...

Netflix has acquired the project for release.
Kirby portrayed Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of The Crown and many of the episodes she appeared in were directed by Caron.
Caron was also a director of Disney+ series Andor. Last year, he directed Apple Studios feature film Sharper, starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith and Briana Middleton.
The Night Always Comes film is based on a screenplay by Seattle-based screenwriter Sarah Conradt whose credits include Mothers’ Instinct and 50 States of Fright. Vlautin’s 2010 book Lean on Pete was adapted and directed...

When a movie claims that it is ‘based on a true story’, oftentimes, the directors prefer that the audience take this notion with a grain of salt. Real life, unfortunately, is rarely as entertaining as movies and adaptations often have to twist events and add plot points to make the story they are trying to tell, into the format of a script. Arcs are added, intentions are given, and depth is carved to make reality fit into the mold of cinema.
However, the question that arises is where does one draw the line?
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is the perfect example of a film that took creative freedom too far. In its pursuit of telling a good story, it twists the past to a point of no recognition. The change was so drastic that even historians got involved.

Having conquered cinemas last year, taking home almost $220 million in box office spoils, Ridley Scott's war epic Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is ready to march on to streaming.
With Scott working from David Scarpa's script, Napoleon charts the rise of the military leader, who ends up becoming emperor of France, realising that ruling the country isn't always quite what he expected — or hoped.
And running in tandem is the complicated relationship between Napoleon and his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), a tangled web of true love and betrayal, all as he's trying to secure his legacy.
The film, which has been nominated for three Oscars, will arrive on Apple TV+ on 1 March. Still unknown is when we might see the nearly four-and-a-half-hour cut that Scott talked to us about when we interviewed him for our Napoleon cover issue. Hopefully we won't have too long to wait…...

Much anticipated sequel to the successful 2022 Hong Kong film doesn’t make the best use of its gifted ensemble
Structured around a series of family dinners that spiral into chaos, Sunny Chan’s Hong Kong comedy Table for Six was a record-breaking box office hit on release, thanks largely to a charming ensemble cast. Most of them return for this highly anticipated sequel, also directed by Chan and conceived as a special lunar new year vehicle. While the first film was almost entirely set in a single apartment, number two is much more ambitious in scope: this time, instead of dinners, it is a series of weddings that escalates into a whirlwind of comical mix-ups.
Reprising their original roles, Louis Cheung and Charm Man Chan star as half-brothers Bernard and Lung, who suddenly find themselves thrown into wedding preparations with their respective long-term girlfriends Monica (Stephy Tang) and Josephine (Ivana Wong). Here,...

“Napoleon” costume designers divvied up their tasks, with Janty Yates concentrating on French civilian wear and David Crossman on evolving military outfits.
The Ridley Scott epic follows Napoleon Bonaparte’s (Joaquin Phoenix) rise from general to emperor. Along the way, he meets and falls in love with Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
The recreation of the battle of Austerlitz is a highlight of the movie. For that, Crossman dressed the Russian infantry in green and the Russian cavalry in white. The Hungarian infantry wore various shades of brown, and Napoleon’s army was in blue. Crossman says his goal was to make the looks as varied as possible, so it didn’t fall flat. “A lot of the time, it’s the hats that distinguish,” says Crossman. “We mixed in civilian pieces into the uniform, particularly on the French, because they were the bankrupt army, and they had no money. Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Napoleon, David Scarpa’s screenplay that fuels Ridley Scott’s historical epic starring Joaquin Phoenix.

That’s why I was bright. My poor eyeballs were so wide. Which direction should I be walking in?” The two have worked together and seen each other since, and Capaldi makes sure to praise Jumbo’s work as both a playwright and performer, including in Josephine and I, a play about Josephine Baker. Josephine Bonaparte was a woman with strength, elegance, and an unknowable nature that proved an irresistible combination for the French emperor Napoleon. In researching the role for Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon, Vanessa Kirby discovered that behind this allure lay an unrelenting drive to survive, and, using that as a basis, she found a foothold: a way to show how this “internally mysterious” woman weathered a tempestuous relationship and its constantly shifting power dynamic. Although Josephine would ultimately fall from favor, due to her inability to produce an heir, Kirby notes that her integrity prevailed, in spite of the unbearable pressures she faced.
Deadline: Did you know a lot about Josephine before you got the role?
Vanessa Kirby: Not really. Actually, when Ridley called me and said, “I’d really like you to play Josephine,” as soon as he said the name and the word, I had all...

Studios are snapping up projects left and right before the end of the year, and now 20th Studios is getting in on the action. After a heated auction, the studio bought the rights to Kevin McMullin’s short story Bomb. The story lights the fuse for an action thriller with franchise potential, and Ridley Scott is coming aboard to direct. In addition to getting behind the camera, Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free, will produce Bomb. The project calls for a young actor to take the lead, so start taking bets on which of Hollywood’s up-and-coming stars could explode on screens for this hotly-anticipated presentation.
According to Deadline, several studios put their bidding paddles in the air for Bomb, including Netflix, Apple, Sony, and Warner Bros. 20th sealed the deal by saying Scott would direct. Plus, Scott has an existing relationship with McMullin, which I’m sure went...

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Michael Mann’s Ferrari are facing allegations — surprising for two films focused on straight white male protagonists — of cultural appropriation.
French and Italian critics have taken offense at the directors’ decisions to cast American actors to play national icons — Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, the general who became French emperor, and Adam Driver as visionary Italian carmaker Enzo Ferrari — and, adding insult to injury, having them speak in English.
“It’s original sin,” wrote a Ferrari reviewer for Italy’s Movieplayer magazine on the casting of Driver, alongside Spanish actor Penélope Cruz as Ferrari’s wife, Laura, and American Shailene Woodley as his mistress. “Not just to have them speak English, but with a dodgy Italian accent.”
“Deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny” was French GQ’s assessment of the very French characters of Napoleon and his lover Josephine (played by Brit Vanessa Kirby) speaking en anglais.

Jodie Comer was originally supposed to play Josephine in the new movie Napoleon, but she had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.
The 30-year-old actress’ stage run in the play Prima Facie was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic and her West End and Broadway runs interfered with the filming dates for Napoleon.
Jodie was replaced by Oscar-nominated actress Vanessa Kirby, who starred opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the new movie. It’s currently playing in theaters.
In the end, Jodie won the Tony Award and the Olivier Award for her work in the play. She’s now reacting to being replaced by Vanessa!

“Yeah, it was all fine. That was a choice I had to make and I didn’t look back in a sense,” Jodie told THR. “I knew I really wanted to do the film, but now, Josephine is Vanessa’s role.

“I was actually designing ‘House of Gucci’ when I was approached about ‘Napoleon,'” says Jana Carboni, the makeup designer for Ridley Scott‘s biographical film about the French emperor. “I loved the idea. It’s an incredible story, an incredible challenge. Then I read the script and I thought, ‘This is epic.’ In the script there are 132 cast members and then we had 500 extras a day so it was humongous.”

Jodie Comer is no stranger to rave reviews, but The End We Start From is the first time she’s received them for the unfamiliar role of a mother. The Emmy winner has briefly played mothers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Duel, but Comer considers Mahalia Belo’s survival drama to be her first proper exploration of motherhood and all its nuances. Based on Megan Hunter’s book and Alice Birch’s adapted screenplay, Comer plays a character simply credited as “Woman,” and at the start of the film, her water breaks around the same time that London is hit by a devastating environmental crisis, resulting in mass flooding.
With a new baby in tow, Comer’s character and Joel Fry’s husband/father character retreat to the countryside like the rest of the city, but food shortages and civil unrest soon cause their young family to separate,...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a movie that French people love to hate. But despite harsh criticism in France, the historical epic smashed the box office and grossed over $9.76 million from 1.15 million tickets sold in its first two weeks in theaters.
Ironically, “Napoleon” got the lowest score of all of Scott’s recent movies on Allociné, the local equivalent of IMDb, with 2.3 stars out of 5 from 4,659 users’ reviews, yet it’s one of Scott’s biggest hits in France. “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoléon Bonaparte, a Corsica-born officer who became Emperor of France, and Vanessa Kirby as his wife as Joséphine de Beauharnais, world premiered in Paris on Nov. 14, a few days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Scott’s last two movies, “The Last Duel” and “House of Gucci,” were warmly reviewed in France, and yet they sold only 425,000 and 800,000 tickets respectively during their releases there.

Ever since he convinced cinematographer Sławomir Idziak to cover the elaborate action sequences in “Black Hawk Down” with 11 cameras, Ridley Scott has been evolving a multi-camera style that is as creatively dynamic as it is economically sensible, capturing a maximum number of angles in a minimal amount of time. The benefits of Scott‘s approach are obvious in a set piece like the Austerlitz sequence in “Napoleon,” where he maintains a clarity of geography and accelerated cutting pace while orchestrating thousands of characters engaged in battle. Yet according to the director, shooting with multiple cameras is just as valuable — perhaps even more so — in the intimate scenes between the moments of spectacle.
“My method is to always work with a minimum of four cameras,” Scott told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, noting that even logistically simple scenes between Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) and Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) behind closed doors benefit from this form of shooting.

Napoleon completists, beware. You will not see the entire story of the infamous Emperor of France in Ridley Scott’s two-and-a-half hour “Napoleon” (Apple Original Films and Columbia Pictures). Scott’s screenwriter David Scarpa explains how the two men carved a movie out of this colorful slice of French history.
Anne Thompson: How did this project come to you?
David Scarpa: I had worked with Ridley on a movie called “All the Money in the World,” and his producing partner, Kevin Walsh, who ran his company, came to me and said that Ridley wanted to do a movie about Napoleon, and didn’t say much else. Like most Americans, I had only a high school basic knowledge of Napoleon or the history of the French Revolution. I had already read the [Stanley] Kubrick screenplay and knew that this was something that a lot of filmmakers had tried to do in the past.

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” could be facing a Waterloo in China, where early box office indications point to a disappointing opening shot.
The Apple Original Films production had clocked RMB6.1 million by 7:45 p.m. local time in mainland China on Friday, according to estimates from ticketing and box office tracking firm Maoyan.
That was only good enough for fourth place behind a trio of local films – two holdovers and one new release title. Market leader,“Across the Furious Sea” had taken RMB27.9 million ($3.88 million) by the same point on Friday, for a seven-day cumulative of $44 million.
Maoyan’s early tracking shows “Napoleon” with a market share marginally more than 8%, a figure borne out by similar data from another Chinese source, Ent Group. Presales through the weekend give the film 6-8%, though that could vary quickly if exhibitors support the title or turn against it. Ent Group shows “Napoleon” playing some 14,000 screenings on Friday.

“Napoleon” star Vanessa Kirby — cast in Ridley Scott’s sprawling, wild historical epic as the divine Joséphine Bonaparte, former wife of Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix), former Empress of France, one-time Queen of Italy, survivor of the Reign of Terror, and that’s just the start — is ready for the big questions.
But, first, jet lag. The Oscar nominee is currently in Australia filming Ron Howard’s “Eden”. How about starting with something light? Like, when exactly did Kirby realize that Scott’s grand epic was also going to be, well, kind of funny? Pretty much from the start.
“I know that the intention was [for it to be], because of the extremity of the world and the intensity of that life of his, how dangerous it was, and how much risk was involved in all of it,” Kirby said. “I think, naturally,...

Plot: The true story of Napoleon Bonaparte’s ruthless rise to power and his obsessive love for his first wife, Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).

Director Ridley Scott has unleashed his latest movie on the world in the form of "Napoleon." It stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, the famed French military leader who led the country to glory in the late 1700s and early 1800s before his exile and, ultimately, death. Scott has made it pretty clear that he wasn't overly concerned when it came to getting all of the historical details correct in the film. As a result, he didn't concern himself with reading a bunch of books about the man before making this sweeping historical epic/biopic.
Scott recently spoke with Deadline about "Napoleon," which is now in theaters before eventually making its way to Apple TV+. During the conversation, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind "Alien" and "Gladiator" was asked what books he read about the French figure to prepare for the film. The short answer? He didn't. Instead, he was more interested in pictures.

In Ridley Scott's new historical biopic "Napoleon," the relationship between Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) and Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby) is depicted as refreshingly direct and even blissfully adolescent, the only casual thing for both people in a whirling miasma of military campaigns and political revolutions. They first met at a party and were instantly drawn to each other, an attraction that led to a few arranged meetings, followed by direct sexual overtures. By Scott's estimation, Napoleon and Joséphine were into each other, with the former frequently pawing at the latter like a horny teenager. In a comedic twist, Napoleon is depicted as being tremendously bad at sex.
Just like in real life, Napoleon and Joséphine cheated on each other incessantly, would admit a little bit of outrage upon the discovery, and then always come back to each other. Also just like in real life, the two would write letters to each other constantly,...

Director Ridley Scott’s latest film, Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is the latest in a line of historical epics that aim to shed light on an often-misunderstood figure and offer additional insight as to that character’s internal motivations and drives. Frequently (and mistakenly) associated with needing to prove his worth beyond his diminutive demeanor, Napoleon Bonaparte is instead portrayed as a patriot eager to serve his country and looking to find the true love of his life. This approach makes for a far more sweeping tale of tragedy and romance than has been attempted before with regards to this story.
The film relates the tale of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, tracing his ascent to power following the French Revolution as well as his often-unstable relationship with Josephine. In addition to showing Napoleon’s rise to the throne of France, the film also focuses on his military tactics allowing...

The end-of-the-year awards contenders naturally include several biographical films, usually, they’re intimate tales of triumph and tragedy, such as Nyad and the upcoming Maestro. This holiday offering has that crossed with another genre, namely that it’s also a big sweeping historical epic. Fitting, since its subject made a huge impact on the entire world two centuries ago. In the director’s chair is a filmmaker known for such big, broad sagas, though he’s done several smaller dramas. And he’s comfortable setting his films in the far distant past and the far distant future. Here he’s flexing his considerable skills as he reunites with a former acting collaborator to tell the spectacular story of Napoleon.
It doesn’t begin with the title subject’s childhood, instead taking us right into France’s “Reign of Terror”, just in time for a royal appointment with “the blade”. Soon after,...

Epic battles and a volatile romance are at the core of filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, a historical action drama about the rise to power and fall of France’s great general and emperor. The films opens in 1789 with Marie Antoinette being taken to the guillotine to be executed. Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) watches from amongst the cheering crowd.
As another French revolution begins, Napoleon – who at this point in history is just a gunnery officer – is given the task of leading an attack against the British in 1793 at the Siege of Toulon, which becomes an enormous loss for the British. Napoleon’s career advances to head of the French army and at the same time, his attention turns to Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).

It’s Thanksgiving weekend and two new wide releases are opening on Wednesday, “Wish” and “Napoleon,” while “Saltburn” expands wide after a limited debut. And moviegoers still have all of those movies from this past weekend as an option, too. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Disney, the studio that’s had the most success on the extended holiday weekend, will release its latest animated film, “Wish,” on November 22. Disney’s history having huge family hits over Thanksgiving week is somewhat legendary with the studio holding more than 12 of the Top 20 Thanksgiving openings under its belt. Thanksgiving being such a big moviegoing draw is helped by people being out en masse for Black Friday shopping, making that a busy moviegoing day as well.

You sure as hell wouldn’t call it a pearl, either. Starting with the French revolution and ending with Monsieur Bonaparte’s no-bang-all-whimper exit from this mortal coil,...
