American animated series Young Justice is considered one of the best superhero series ever made. Contrary to its title which suggests that it is an adaptation of Peter David, Todd Dezago, and Todd Nauck’s comic series, the TV series is an original story, set in the DC Universe. It primarily explores the adventures of teenage and young adult superheroes.
A still from Young Justice Season 3
Created by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman, the series features numerous young heroes such as Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis. There are many other animated series based on DC characters, but what sets this one apart is the fact that the creators also intend to give an insight into the mental health of these saviors.
So much so, that there are multiple episodes in the series that focus on different mental health issues. Moreover, it is not just the creators...

Marvel’s X-Men ’97 animated superhero series is the talk of the town these days. Another animated series named Young Justice once attracted a fair amount of attention. Developed by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman, the show’s first two seasons were aired on Cartoon Network. While the third season was aired on DC Universe, the fourth was released on HBO Max.
DC’s Young Justice
Being an animated show did not deter Vietti and Weisman from exploring realistic topics. One of the DC heroes in the series even became a symbol of mental health and the showrunners once revealed how it turned out that way.
The Superhero in Young Justice Whose Mental Health Issues Were Explored
Although the title Young Justice suggests otherwise, the show is not an adaptation of the eponymous comic series written by Peter David, Todd Dezago, and Todd Nauck. Instead, the show has an original story,...

This comic obviously doesn’t really exist. There is no Amazing Fantasy #1000, it exists only in the heads of the Marvel marketing department. Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary, however, does exist, and he’s one of a handful of characters that forced his way into mainstream pop culture many years before Marvel became the pop culture juggernaut it now is. Peter Parker is, of course, all of us when we were teenage kids. Socially awkward, tough home life, constantly short of money…take your pick, there’s something in there that everyone could relate to. The fact he gained his powers also made every kid reading think, hey, if it happened to him, it could happen to me.
Peter Parker has also had a massive influence on a lot of professionals now working in the industry, as this anniversary issue shows.

Not content with currently hitting it out of the park over at Image with Geiger, Johns pitches up with a timely reminder that although Image are his new friends, DC are his long term best buds. He obviously made his career there, and a big part of the start of that career was a rather good book called Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E that introduced a young girl called Courtney Whitmore. This character is probably dearest to John’s heart than any other, as he modelled her on his real life sister Courtney, who tragically died in a plane crash. With that book and his use of her in Jsa (another great book) Johns established Courtney/ Stargirl as a strong enough character that she ended up with her own TV show. I’ve loved the...

It’s that time of year when the Christmas/ Holiday/ Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa Specials come out. Not all different ones of course, but these days the books try and be inclusive and include all the above. DC have cleverly sidestepped the yearly outrage at using either Christmas or Holidays in the title. Life’s too short. I’ve been enjoying these seasonal specials in one shape or another for many years, going back to the late 70’s. I still have most of them and still read them every year in the run up to Christmas. Digital now means I don’t even have to fight my way into the correct comic storage box too, an annual tradition I’m pleased to let go. The stories are generally light and a bit of fun, but that’s the spirit of the season.

I was always a Gwen Stacy guy. Sure, Mary Jane had all the great one liners and looked spectacular, but Gwen had the class and grace. Gwen also features heavily in one of the most notorious events in Spider-Man’s history, and for the longest time that is what she was remembered for. Which is a shame, because she was always a vibrant supporting cast member, and should be remembered as such. Later came all the clones and alternate universe Gwen’s, but Gage and Nauck don’t want you to focus on those, they want to take us back to the beginning. The real beginning. Not when Gwen’s story intersected with Pete’s, making her a character in his story, but when Peter Parker first became a part of her life, and a supporting character for her.
